This is what I would have chosen for September 5th:

Entrance: Those Who Love and Those Who Labor
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: I Received the Living God
Recessional: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service

Of course, it would have been great to use the actual antiphons, but, oh well. 🤷
 
23rd Sunday in OT

Communion: Ave Verum Corpus (we didn’t get to do it last week. My alto was sick ;0(
Pescador de Hombres in english ( a new one for us. Beautiful song)

Have not heard of that one but the title suggests a beautiful traditional song. What book is it in?

Well there are several different settings. THe most popular one being the Vaugh Williams from his mystical songs, there are several others that are also beautiful. I think my favorite is the david hurd version. Here is the text.

I love anything to the tune of Finlandia. I think next weekend “Be Still, My Soul” would be very appropriate for the commemoration of 9/11 which falls on Saturday, September 11, 2010.

Preparation: Take Up Your Cross (#384 CCH)
Communion: Only This I Want (#379 CCH)
Closing: Lord of the Dance (#382 CCH)
 
I haven’t seen this one on the list yet so I will throw it out there. Last Sunday we had Phil Collins “just another day in paradise” for the Eucharistic hymn. Luckily we had bongos to accompany.

I was thinking of an AC/DC song for closing “Highway to h-e-double hockey sticks!”

Sad part is hosea you are joking… I wasn’t.
 
God is Light is a really pretty new song in the OCP Breaking Bread that I’ve purchased the octavo for and taught my group. It’s a great for communion, extremely prayerful. The harmony arrangement just blew me away. I’m glad the OCP is putting new music in their annual hymnal every year that I really like.

Other songs we’ve been doing for communion that are a not in BB but are very pretty and have really made a positive impact on parishioners -

I Love You, Lord/Te Amo, Señor Tim and Julie Smith
Be With Me Lord, (Sarah Hart)
Come Lord Jesus (Steve Angrisano)
Jesus My Everything (Matt Maher)

I really love Matt Maher, but his rock feel I think is a little more for the Life Teen band. But Jesus My Everything is not as heavy, it works so well with acoustic piano and guitar

A lot of my suggestions have sort of a healing/resurrection type due to the fact that next Saturday is the 9th anniversary of 9/11. So I thought it would be a good idea to suggest some music to reflect that.

This is what my music director has:

Processional Hymn: #438 O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE
Preparation of the Gifts: #692 The Lord is My Light Walker
Communion Hymn: #696 Yes, I Shall Arise Alstott
Recessional Hymn: #611 In the Day of the Lord Ridge

I am a little leery about incorporating events like September 11th into the Mass. It is not that I am being insensitive, but, the proper place would be within the Prayer of the Faithful.

This is what I would have chosen for September 12th:

Entrance: Word of God, Come Down on Earth
Offertory: Our Father, We Have Wandered
Communion: At that First Eucharist
Recessional: There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy

I like Our Father, We Have Wandered (sung to the tune of O Sacred Head Surrounded) because of its direct reference to the Gospel of the day (Prodigal Son).

Gospel Acclamation- Celtic Alleluia
Offertory-Seek ye first
Communion- Lord of all hopefulness
Meditation- Surely the presence

For mass today – Labor Day in the USA – I chose these as a part of the Mass for the Blessing of Human Labor:

Entrance: All People That on Earth do Dwell
Offertory: Make Us True Servants
Communion: I Come With Joy
Dismissal: Lord of Nations, God Eternal

I am always torn on national holidays because I know that many people would want me to sing some (U.S.) patriotic song at dismissal. I cannot bring myself to sing the Star Spangled Banner at Mass, seeing it as being totally inappropriate unless done as after a dismissal hymn , and so usually opt for America the Beautiful or God Bless America if I have to do something patriotic. Lord of Nations works very well because its melody is Hymn to Joy and as such ties into the European roots of our parishioners.

I have not heard of “Our Father, we have wandered.” I’m going to see if it is in Journeysongs. We love O, sacred head Surrounded. It would be nice to sing that melody outside of Lent.

Beautiful. And it is in Journeysongs. We will definately use it. Would you suggest it for ordinary time?

I would suggest it for this coming weekend because the text fits the Gospel of the Prodigal Son perfectly.
