However, the psalm should be kept simple. It should not be complicated. The problem with Marty Haugen is that since he is not Catholic, I do not think that he quite understands the mechanics of genuine Sacred Music. His Mass of Creation takes liberties with the text, specifically his version of the Agnus Dei.Although I enjoy chants from time to time, I much prefer music with a full melody throughout.

Now, in fairness, at my previous parish in Austin, our music director was a non-Catholic. However, he took the time to learn whart Sacred Music entails (how the Church sees it). He wrote psalm and Mass settings that were in line with the tenents of real Sacred Music and he did not take liberties with the text. His pieces were beautiful and singable. I do not know if he eventually converted, but, he really made a solid effort at keeping the music Sacred and traditional while he was there.
