Does anyone know when the Palm Sunday Papal Mass is on? Eastern time in the United States?
 
I was reading through the Ash Wednesday through Pentecost issue of “Today’s Liturgy” by OCP, and I was a little frightened when they put in the music suggestions for the Easter Vigil that using the Easter Vigil text of “Christ Be Our Light” was an acceptable alternative for the Exsultet. Isn’t that a bit illicit?

Here’s the Easter Vigil text of “Christ Be Our Light”
  1. This is the night of new beginnings. This is the
    night when heaven meets earth. This is the night
    filled with God’s glory, promise of our new birth!
Refrain: Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

No, it’s not licit. I raised this issue with the Worship Office of the Archdiocese of Portland because my pastor is doing his drum-beat version of the Exultet. They said that it was not licit. I don’t know why OCP keeps doing this, let alone why they keep getting away with it. It’s really sad.

The Anticipated Mass for Palm Sunday was pretty bad at my dad’s parish. The music was really awful. I asked the pastor if he needed help with the music before Mass. He did let me lead the singing of All Glory, Laud and Honor, but, the rest his choir did. It was a nightmare. For the actual entrance, they sang “Glory and Praise to Our God”. The seminarian chanted the psalm and the Gospel acclamation (which were not bad, but, they were not singable). The offertory was “How Great Thou Art”. The only passable song was “Gift of Finest Wheat” for Communion. However, the guitar and the choir were not in synch as they were all out of tune. The parts of the Mass were bad, too.

After Mass I offered to work with the choir to get them ready for Triduum. The sad thing is that this is not an isolated problem down here. It is symptomatic of the state of the entire diocese. It’s deplorable, to say the least.

I’m going to be drinking a lot of Dr. Pepper tonight. 😃 It starts at 2:30AM, Texas time (most of us are in the Central Time Zone, except for El Paso, which is in Mountain–I’m not on Mountain time).

What’s bad about what OCP is doing, is if some music directors don’t have a logic about what is licit for Mass, and what is not, then, they would believe that what OCP puts out is acceptable to use. I mean, if they put it out, it wouldn’t be wrong to use it? Right? Wrong.

The processional on Palm Sunday was “Glory and Praise to Our God”? Oh, I would’ve screamed! How could they use that and pass up “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”?

I just got a headache from reading that!

Haha. I’m not sure if I will get up and watch it. It’s 3:30 my time then. I went to Mass with my grandmother tonight, but I have to get up tomorrow for the 8:30 Mass and serve. I don’t think it’d be a good idea to stay up and watch it. I might catch the encore later in the day.

I will leave my TV on tuned to EWTN. I usually tend to wake up during the homily. It’s like I have an internal alarm clock set to awaken me the minute the Holy Father starts preaching. 😃 No doubt the music will be excellent!

The replay is on at 7PM, Texas time. I’ll be watching that while my dad watches Wrestlemania. :eek:
 
I ended up going to the 8:30 am Mass this morning to serve, and I went to the 11 am Mass as well. They didn’t do the outdoor procession as planned at the 11 am Mass, so they proceeded with the Solemn Entrance.

The Exultet is one of the few hymns of the Church’s liturgy that does not allow for the possibility of substitution. When some thing is allowed to be substituted, it will specify that another suitable hymn may be substituted. For the Exutlet, the shorter form is permitted and the Conference of Bishops is allowed to add responses. That is all that is written in the red.

Luckily, my parish sticks with the traditional form. I found out that my parochial vicar is chanting the Exsultet. That should be nice.
 
Well, my music director was down at the church bake sale today after all Masses, and he was giving someone copies of the Holy Week song lists because they are the sacristan for the Easter Vigil and she wants to see how everything is going. I went along and he gave me copies as well. Haha.

I realize that selections have been made, but, I would seriously caution against using “Table of Plenty.” The song really does not speak to the Sacred mysteries that are about to unfold on Holy Thursday. The song is horizontal in nature, placing emphasis on the community and not enough on the veritcal. It is not the best way to begin Triduum.

The SLJ Gloria is problematic because it takes liberties with the text. This is not allowed according to the Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, Liturgiam Authenticam and Redemptionis Sacramentum. In fact, when the CDWDS released the new translations of the Ordinary of the Mass, the Congregation strongly admonished composers about using paraphrases. The music needs to fit the text, not the other way around.

I am thinking this will be my last year. We will have a new deacon next February that is capable of singing it. I have already let him know that the deacon singing is the preferred option.

Does anyone use Everette Frese’s Exultet? It has been around for a long time and is quite beautiful with choral parts as well as the Presidor’s.

Haha, thanks. I have to thank my music director lots. I’m mad though that I can’t find sheet music for that “Christ is risen from the dead…” must be really old, lol.

Well, here are the words to it:

I love how he has the organ get gradually louder on each verse, and then when verse three comes along, it’s like “WOW!” He knows how to set the mood. I got chills last year!
 
And I think we’ll be using “I Saw Water Flowing” for all seven Sundays of Easter like last year and the year before. I love it!
