May I make some observations? Because we are in Cycle C, the Gospel is about Jesus’ triple question to St. Peter. The account of Emmaus is from another cycle.

Thus, this is what I would choose:

Processional: At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing
Offertory: Alleluia, The Strife is O’er
Communion: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus or Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Recessional: Alleluia! Alleluia! Let the Holy Anthems Rise

Of course, if my parish knew Latin, I would have picked Tu Es Petrus for the offertory, since, not only does the Gospel concern St. Peter, but, it is the day before the fifth anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict XVI! 👍

We were without a choir today. My parochial vicar seemed to have read my mind, somewhat. This is what he picked:

Enrance: Jesus Christ is Ris’n Today (verses 1,2)
Offertory: Ye Sons and Daughters
Communion: At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing
Recessional: Jesus Christ is Ris’n Today (verses 3,4)

I led the singing for the Communion hymn, but, I started running out of gas during the second go-around. :eek: But, my parochial vicar told me that he was grateful. It was hard for him to sing and distribute Holy Communion.
 
What never ceases to amaze me is the lack of Spanish-language Easter songs in United in Christ/Unidos en Cristo. There are only about four or five. This is not good. Then, you factor in what OCP suggests for use and it makes for a very musically impoverished five remaining weeks of Easter. 🤷
 
Benedictgal, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Mass today. I was expecting “Glory in the Cross”, which is okay, but I’d prefer something else. But, my music director decided to use “The Day of Resurrection” for the first time. I was also surprised that we used “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” for the recessional hymn. Usually he only uses it on Easter Sunday.

The hymns today were very powerful.

OCP suggested more traditional hymns for next weekend, so I hope he picks one of those. 😛

Have you ever heard of “We Walk By Faith”? I don’t know if you’d like it, but I think it’s a nice song.

I actually like “We Walk by Faith”. However, given the circumstances today, it would not have worked since the version that I know from the Worship III hymnal is probably slightly different than what the OCP stuff has. Mind you, I do not read music; I only go by memory.

For leading most of the singing, my parochial vicar did a great job. 👍 He chanted the Gospel Acclamation, the dialogue, the preface, the Sanctus, the Memorial Acclamation, the doxology and the double Alleluia dismissal! 👍👍
 
The reason I suggest “Two Were Bound for Emmaus” for music directors on here is because it does correspond with the Gospel next week. Here’s the words:
  1. Two were bound for Emmaus, disheartened
    and lost; all their hope for the future had been
    nailed to a cross. Love unknown then walked beside them,
    come back from the dead, and they knew he was
    risen in the breaking of bread.
  2. On the Sea of Tiberius, when the night was
    nearly gone and their toil seemed so useless, not one
    fish had they caught, from the shore the stranger called to them,
    “Cast your net, friends once more.” And they filled it to
    bursting, but the net was not torn.
  3. Then they knew it was Jesus and the hastened
    in to shore; bread and fish for their breakfast from the
    hands of their Lord. “O Peter, if you love me
    you must care for my sheep; if you follow your
    Shepherd, then a shepherd you’ll be.”
  4. When the road makes us weary, when our labor
    seems but loss, when the fire of faith weakens and too
    high seems the cost, let the Church turn to its risen Lord,
    who for us bore the cross, and we’ll find our hearts
    burning at the sound of his voice.

With all due respect, that is somewhat sad, not a single genuine Easter hymn. At least Ye Sons and Daughters should have been used as it corresponds exactly to today’s Gospel.

What folks tend to forget is that the Church stretches Easter Sunday to eight days. Thus, today is still Easter Sunday. If you look at the Gospel, it begins with the evening of Easter Sunday and then follows through eight days later. That is why it is perfectly fine to use Jesus Christ is Ris’n Today for this Sunday’s Mass because we are still in that Easter Day. That is why, for the past eight days, the Church calls us to either sing or recite the Gloria, even on the weekdays because of the Easter octave. In my opinion, it is sad that this fact is lost on many music directors. Not only should proper sacred music formation be required, but, liturgical formation as well.

I don’t know this particular song, so I will have to take your word for it. I would love to hear Tu Es Petrus, but, that will probably never happen down here. 🤷
 
The beginning of our mass got a little mixed up. After the priest returned to his chair after doing the sprinkling, he did that short closing prayer, and then when right ahead into the opening prayer not allowing our choir to jump in the the Gloria, so we sang the Gloria after the opening prayer.

Would it still be somewhat appropriate to sing “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” during the Third through Seventh Sundays of Easter?

The only real Easter song I could consider here is “Glory in the Cross”. Other than that, it doesn’t give that “Easter feel” that should still be within the church until Pentecost, especially since we’re still in the octave of Easter.

Does your director use “Today’s Liturgy” if you know by any chance? I was looking through it and most of the suggestions they put out is what your director used.

Her orignal plan was for us to sing One Lord for Entrance before she decided to change it to Glory In The Cross.

I think that next Sunday’s gospel is the extended version of this past Friday’s gospel.

Now, there are some good/okay hymns that could’ve been used:

There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy
O God Beyond All Praising
Christ, The Lord, Is Risen Today (LLANFAIR)
Lift High the Cross
O Bless the Lord, My Soul
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Glory in the Cross

Now, the rest OCP suggested is kind of…well…you know 😉

However, I think they suggested “O Bless the Lord, My Soul” only because the hymn tune is St. Thomas. :rolleyes: Hehe.

I would think so, however, use it sparingly. We have five Sundays left. However, bear in mind that there are some parishes that will have Ascension Sunday. At this point then, “A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing” would replace “Jesus Christ is Ris’n Today”.

I would try to wean folks from OCP as much as possible. Hymn selection is not rocket science to the extent that it is something totally dependent on the powers that be from OCP. Sadly, though, OCP does not have a wide selection of Easter Music neither in English nor in Spanish.

Music directors should be encouraged to move away from the OCP suggestions and try letting the seasons and the readings be their guide.

I think my music director was only planning on using it for Easter Sunday and the Second Sunday of Easter.

I would think using it all seven Sundays would get monotonous. There are some other good ones that I hope he planned on using like “At the Lamb’s High Feast”, "Christ, the Lord, Is Risen Today (LLANFAIR), “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus”, “Crown Him with Many Crows”, etc.

I think for the Ascension he might use “Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise”, but last year he didn’t use that one, instead he replace it with “Rejoice, the Lord is King”.
