Exactly 200 years ago this Christmas Eve — Dec. 24, 1818 — in a little church in what is now Austria, the world heard for the first time a poem set to music that eventually would be hailed as one of the most popular and beloved Christmas carols of all time.

Two of my favorite bands, Dream Theater and Avantasia, both recently released songs for their upcoming albums.

Avantasia’s song, “The Raven Child” is absolutely fantastic. Tobias really outdid himself, and having Tobias, Jorn, and Hansi all together on a song has me geeking out so much:

Dream Theater’s “Untethered Angel” is a welcome return to form. It reminds me a lot of what’s on A Dramatic Turn of Events, which is among my favorite Dream Theater albums:

Mike Portnoy is still estranged from Dream Theater? How long has it been now? 8 years?

Right. I’m just very surprised Portney hasn’t rejoined DT in all that time. Mangini is a great drummer for sure though.

Favorite(s) Christmas Hymn would be either:

or

I also really like just about any Christmas piece from Trans-siberian Orchestra

On Christmas morning many years ago, there was a program on TV called The Nativity. Princess Grace narrated/hosted it. At one point in the program, Placido Domingo sang O Holy Night in English and I believe Latin from inside St. Peter’s Basilica. It was magical.

Amazingly, the original handwritten score of Silent Night has been found in a recently discovered Austrian archive:

That is funny!
Do you have a painting of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” by any chance?

Placido Domingo sings “Oh Holy Night” in a Family Theater Productions Christmas Special filmed inside the Vatican.
