What kind of secular music do you think best reflects traditional moral values? Please consider only the lyrics and not your like/dislike for the rhythm or beat.

Well, if you’re only considering the lyrics, of course there are good songs and bad songs in each genre. But country seems to have a lot more good ones than the other genres, I guess because family is a recurring theme in many country songs.

a lot of rock has very traditional themes, you just have to look for them, most people have the misconception that rock is the devil’s music. Some people just need a stronger outlet then country to express themselves.

There is good music in all the genres.

I like Rock/Alt/Country/Folk the best. These artist tend to have the best crafted songs. 👍

None of the above in the poll even come close:
Rock and Roll–about having a good time–not moral good times
Country–about divorce and leaving others - vice versa and drunkeness
Rap/ Hip-Hop–living out materialism and lust
Alternative–drug culture
R&B–let’s make love baby–but not married love

but country is probably the closest because it is not out to impress people.

Don’t you think that you’re generalizing just a teeny bit?

I mean, there is even variance within one songwriter’s works. One song could be great with a great message. The next could have a very poor message. But that doesn’t mean that first song is any less good.

There is a lot of very good music out there. You just have to look for it.

Country is probably the closest BUT how does anyone tolerate it? 😛

I dunno…I hardly ever listen to any of them. I love (and play) classical music. So I guess I’m out of the cultural mainstream. But then again, being Catholic isn’t exactly what I would call being in the cultural mainstream…

I think none of the above should have been one of the options.

I definately agree. Actually I find that a lot of songs have a good but slightly (or more than slightly) twisted moral in them. Sometimes while I listen to a song, I’ll actually change some words in my head to reflect more of a “true catholic” view.
😃 Other times I just apply the song to God, since some songs seem to be overly, ummm, focused on just the alternate sex (obviously I can only do this on most songs “One Thing” is kind of an interesting song for that, though it’s not quite perfect)

It’s pretty amazing to me with some of the songs out there right now about breaking up, how the first “one” cuts you down when they cheat etc from BOTH women and men artists that people aren’t getting it. I don’t like all of the songs, but some are very revieling about how bad pop culture is and what is wrong with it. Unfortunately, I don’t even think the artists get it.

I chose R&B. It has the most soul.

Sorry, but I can’t listen to country music long enough to find out what the lyrics are. 😉

While it’s true that there are poor topics/lyrics in every type, my vote goes to country. In my experince there are many more songs that overtly mention salvation from Christ playing on country stations by otherwise secular artist. There are top country songs that directly mention Christ and his gift of salvation.

Now if we could just get rid of the honky tonk, left my wife and got drunk themes. . .

Growing up, I hated country. Now, after actually listening to it, I find that for me, there’s a good balance between soulful songs, and rip-roaring, just wanna have fun ones.

That is so true! Two of my current favorites are 'Long Black Train" (about how sin will take you straight into hell, but repenting of sin will save you), and “Tougher Than Nails” (a father talking to his son about how Jesus might have been mocked and made fun of for being weak, but ultimately he was tougher than nails). The vast majority of country music being played on the radio now has to do with love between a husband and wife, family, and generally upbeat and positive themes. Anyone who thinks country music is all about ‘My dog left me, my wife broke down, and someone shot my truck’ :whacky: has not listened to country for about 20 years or so.

In addition, the country station I listen to (WKIS KISS Country in South FL) makes a point at Christmas of playing Christ-centered Christmas music for several weeks during the holiday season. They’re motto has been “We put Christ back in Christmas music”.
Have a great day everyone,
Judy

I think country music is definitely the closest to good moral values!! If you think (as others have said!) that it’s all divorce and leaving and cheating, you haven’t listened in a LOOONG time!!

Tons of country songs are about kids and family and church and God and marriage and real-life values.

I heard this once, and it’s pretty close to the truth:

Rock music (and rap, too!) is about Friday night.
Christian music is about Sunday morning.
Country music is about life from Monday to Friday.

So…considering my life is completely dominated by the Monday through Friday variety of events, I vote country!

Though my preference would probably be R&B, I think that Country Music mostly reflects the values of America (or used too). Most of it is down to earth…the woes and the loves of the ordinary working man/woman, etc…:twocents:
