So a Muslim friend (we don’t really talk, we just saw each other a lot a few years ago) shared this video, no one liked it, but I just saw it and I don’t know how to feel about it. First of all, if you see the video, there is a big problem with how it talks about Jesus being our savior and Jesus sacrificing for us. They seem to be misunderstanding the sacrifice concept, specifically, not understanding that that was for us, for our sins, not because God needed that like they say. Not to mention they obviously, like others, try to look for contradictions in the Bible (of course people look for things that are wrong in their scriptures but this was important to make note of). Bear in mind this is from a Muslim source, so it makes sense they would not find what the truth is and just go with what they think (could apply to anyone non-Catholic). So, although were not good friends, I feel the need to explain what we actually believe so he does not just dish out Christianity as some sort of lie (I know many Catholics who have pointed out the fallacies of Islam in different ways, but I doubt I should talk about those). However, I do not have experience discussing with Muslims. I guess I need some advice on what to do/talk about, and particularly how to rebuke the claims in that video and explain what our faith is really about.

Thank you, and happy new year.

this could have also gone in Apologetics or in non-Catholic religions but I chose this section

Amazing how anyone non-Catholic cannot find the truth and just goes with what they think. Great attitude for meaningful dialogue!

this video is from Ask a Muslim. I think we should have a video series called Ask a Catholic. The Jews sacrificed animals for the atonement for their sins. In Christianity, Jesus, the Lamb of God, was sacrificed for our sins. A one time sacrifice. Then Jesus was resurrected to return to Heaven to sit at the right hand of God.
This video proves if you have a question about Christianity, ask a Christian scholar, not a Muslim.

If this is sarcasm, note I said “makes sense” and “could apply to others” I never said “everyone non-Catholic does this” or anything of the sort. It just made sense in this situation. Do not assume.

Pretty much… Thats certainly something I would like to tell him.

I guess I read it wroong, I thought your conclusion was that anyone not Catholic would be prone to error.

If this was someone I knew, I would politely point out that the video contains many errors about Christian theology and isn’t at all representative of what we actually believe. In fact, it starts out with a glaring error in the narrator’s definition of a sacrifice as “something you give up in order to get something in return”. The true definition, and the way it’s used in the context of our theology, is “an act of slaughtering an animal or person or surrendering a possession as an offering to God”. The video just goes downhill from there. I would suggest to this person that if s/he was really interested in understanding Jesus’ sacrifice, s/he should look at Christian sources as 7 Sorrows suggested.

Coincidentally, I was just listening to a bible study on this subject. You can see the video here, starting at the pertinent point.

The website Answering Islam has a lot of answers to some of these objections brought up by Muslims.

From my experience the objections often raised are incorrect and entirely misleading.

From what I have seen from Muslims quoting Scripture, theirs do not represent the Word of God as Christian bibles do, so I tell them I don’t even recognize the passage or their interpretation as even Christian.

It is just that they refuse the Crucifixion as a statement of faith or any form of God outside of Allah.
