I doubt if I have the wherewithals to read that book. So give us a break and tell us what is your thesis on "killing in the name of Christians.
The book talks about the wars fought against the Baltic peoples. The “warror-monks” of that time who fought to convert the non-christians to christianity, as well as some fighting against eastern christians who were trying to convert these peoples themselves.
Also the life of Charlemagne had plenty of battles against non-christian europeans…yes some were defensive, but others were not. Here is the “Oath of Renunciation” that the conquered were ordered to profess:
"1 Forsachistu diobolae?
Forsakest thou [the] devil?
et respondeat:
and (s)he should reply:
Ec forsacho diobolae.
I forsake [the] devil.
2 End allum diobolgeldae?
And all idolatry?
End ec forsacho allum diobolgeldae.
And I forsake all idolatry.
3 End allum dioboles uuercum?
And all [the] devil’s works?
End ec forsacho allum dioboles uuercum ende uuordum, Thunaer ende Uuoden ende Saxnote, ende allum them unholdun the hira genotas sint.
And I forsake all [the] devil’s works and promises, Þunor and Wóden and Seaxneat “sword-friend”, i.e. Tíw] and all those devils who are their followers.
4 Gelobistu in got alamehtigan fadaer?
Believest thou in God [the] Almighty Father?
Ec gelobo in got alamehtigan fadaer.
I believe in God [the] Almighty Father.
5 Gelobistu in Crist godes suno?
Believest thou in Christ, God’s Son?
Ec gelobo in Crist godes suno.
I believe in Christ, God’s Son.
6 Gelobistu in halogan gast?
Believest thou in [the] Holy Ghost?
Ec gelobo in halogan gast?
I believe in [the] Holy Ghost."
One other person who forced conversion and killed and tortured those who continued in their pre-christian religion after being forcibly baptized was St. Olaf Tryggvason. Some of his methods included: Forcing live snakes down peoples throats, putting a bowl of red-hot embers on a person’s stomach until it burst open, cut peoples’ tongues out if they preached against christianity and/or for the ways of their own previous religion, and exhile. And they made him a saint! (This is one of the reasons I haven’t converted to Catholocism)
