Hello everybody,

I am literally in tears as I am writing this post. I have finally decided to have the courage to come out at least to the internet.

I was born and raised a strict, fundamentalist Muslim in a Muslim country in the Middle East. I was a first and practising Muslim for the whole 20 years of my life. Even as a Muslim, I had always been curious about the Virgin Mary. She is the ONLY woman who is mentioned by name in the Quran. In fact, her name is mentioned over 30 times in the Quran - even more than the New Testament. She has a whole chapter named after her (Surah Maryam) and I had always been fascinated by her as Islam is an extremely male-dominated and patriarchal religion. I had grown up believing that Maryam (as Muslims call her) is the most honoured and pious woman in the whole world and a perfect example of what a woman should be as she submitted her entire will and life to Allah. I was always fascinated by Prophet Isa (Jesus) as we were always taught that he will come back and reign the Earth during the Millennium. The ONLY prophet in the legions of thousands of prophets who would actually come back on Earth and be a King.

Fast forward - I went to a Western country to go to college and got introduced to the LDS Church through a pair of missionaries. I had NO idea that they were a complete different and distinct group of Christianity. Having no knowledge of Christianity myself, I had no idea that Christianity is divided into thousands of sects with literally mutually exclusive beliefs.

I read the Book of Mormon and loved the words of Jesus Christ when He came to the Americas and loved how Mary was described as the fairest of all virgins. I prayed about it and felt a warm fuzzy feeling and converted to the LDS Church and soon after migrated to the USA. However, I was still in a lot of shock and surprise as Mary wasn’t mentioned much in the Book of Mormon and the New Testament but I knew that my Lord Jesus Christ was my Saviour.

I experienced a crisis of faith in the USA as I felt that the Mormons wasn’t putting much or any emphasis on Christ, His Disciples or the Holy Mother. Every sacrament meeting, general conference or fireside focused on ‘following the Prophet’, ‘Joseph Smith is a true Prophet’ and the ‘Book of Mormon is true’. I wanted to read Christ’s own words as they weren’t found in the Book of Mormon so I began to read the New Testament for the first time and WOW - what a shock it was.

I was able to experience the book that changed the world and soak into my Saviour’s life and teachings and what His apostles taught and did. I was able to learn that there is One God (John 1:1) and there is no need for temples and most of all - my Blessed Holy Mother was a virgin and did NOT HAVE SEX WITH HEAVENLY FATHER.

I started to say my Hail Marys and everytime I did, I felt the most wondrous peace in my soul. It felt as my beloved Mother was right there next to me, comforting me through the spiritual angst. I was able to research on Christianity’s history and found out Christ’s church never died and there was no Great Apostasy and it truly was the Church that Christ started.

I have never spoken to ANY Catholic or been inside any Catholic Church. But I am truly come to the conclusion that it is the right path to my Saviour. I want to be a Catholic Christian, ask my Holy Mother to pray for me and worship my Saviour without any suspicion or persecution.

I attend a Mormon university and I would be expelled if they found out I am considering Catholicism. If I am expelled I would be sent home to the Middle East where I could be executed for apostasy.

Please, I am freaking out and don’t know who to ask for help or what to do. Is there any hope for me?

Wow, that’s an interesting story, brother! 👍

I would wait for someone to give You a good advice. But nevertheless, I’m sure that You will be good. You won’t be left without help! :hug3:

Welcome. Feel free to post here and ask any questions about Catholocism you have.
Jesus is your Brother and Mary is your Mother and they love you very much.

Any chance you could transfer to a different university?

We will pray for you.

Welcome home… 🙂

You are in a very hard position and all I can offer you are my prayers.

Peace be with you sister, pray to the Lord for guidance, and be patient with yourself and others while the Holy Spirit works.

Your journey towards Catholicism from your background would truly be a road less traveled, and it will make all the difference.

Continue to read the new testament, and you can research the catholic faith online, or make an inquiry to a local catholic church. You may even be able to tell them your story, and perhaps that church or the diocese could sponsor you to attend another school where you would not have fear of reprisal of following Jesus Christ. Jesus has called you by name and you are responding. Your college years maybe a time of winter and penance, but when you come home to the Church that Jesus has given you and the sacraments you will enjoy a springtime like no other.

God bless you and I will be praying for you for the tough and wonderful times ahead.

I will pray for you. Suggest you call a local Catholic Church and ask for a meeting with a Priest. Such meetings are in the strictest of confidence.

Peace be with you. The Holy Spirit is calling you into the Catholic Church; welcome home!
You do not have to leave school or go home to certain death. For now, find a Catholic Bible to read and try to learn all you can about the Church. You do not say where you are specifically, but try and find a Catholic Church in your area and make an appointment to speak with the priest. You do not have to be a Catholic. The priest will be happy to talk with you, answer your questions, issues and concerns and give you some advice. Leave the rest to God; He knows what you need and will see to it that you get it. BTW, today is the traditional day we celebrate the birth of Mary; I think she is taking a personal interest in you! 😉

What I would do is 1. stop freaking out 🙂 --it won’t help. Pray to Mary who has led you this far; she must love you very much! Did you know that today is the day we celebrate her birthday?

Second, contact a Catholic priest in your area. This is an old article, but there may be a Newman Center in your college, and the priest will probably have helped students in your situation.

Your love for God and Mary is really inspiring! Please keep in touch with us as you go along in your spiritual journey!

First of all, be at peace. Jesus and Mary have led you this far for a reason. They will not abandon you. God obviously has a great purpose for you! Like other posters have mentioned, please seek out a Catholic priest. Continue praying to Mother Mary for her intercession. She will arrange everything according to God’s Will. God bless you and welcome home!

Well, first things first. Do not get expelled. May I ask, what will your immigration status be after you graduate?

I’ve never met anyone in your position before.

If it really is life or death, please be very careful.

Grace and peace to you and may God bless you for your courage!

I found your story quite touching and I am praying for you.
Please, I am freaking out and don’t know who to ask for help or what to do. Is there any hope for me?
There is always hope, whatever happens.

I really wish I had a good answer for you in your current situation; it certainly sounds like a difficult one for sure. I would say try to keep calm and keep praying. And, whatever happens, keep your eyes on Christ!

Your story is truly inspiring. 👍
I’m going to be the voice of dissent… please do not keep any hard copies of Catholic literature in your possession. This would be considered blasphemous to “the prophet” and could put you at further risk. Read online. Continue to pray. Meet with a Priest, and make a long term plan for yourself. I second the notion of possibly getting sponsored to attend another college or university where you could practice your faith in a more public way.
Peace and love to you!

I agree with the other posters that you should lay low and not make your faith public at your current university since it’s a life or death situation. How much longer are you going to be in college? (Transferring is another option, as others have said.)

Hang in there! God will guide you! <3

Check your student handbook because I don’t think there is grounds for expulsion, but I could be wrong. Non-LDS students can attend their colleges and if they did try to kick you, make a media storm. No one wants to be the college that sent a student to their death.

Like others said, you are not obligated to reveal your intentions, and it is OK to evade if questioned, but don’t flat-out lie either.

And just a note of caution. I noticed that these conversions are heavily based on the feelings you experienced. Nothing wrong with that in and of itself, but feelings are fickle and not reliable guides to the Truth. Our Faith is based on the eyewitness testimony of the Apostles and many others as opposed to just one guy having visions.

I am pretty sure that at least one Mormon university will admit non-Mormons, but if a Mormon student enrolls, and later leaves the church, he will be expelled. If this is your predicament, it would indeed be unwise to officially leave, without a plan.

Can you apply for citizenship? Maybe you should contact the Department of Immigration and Naturalization. If you are close to graduation, it would help if you had some work possibilities/job interviews lined up. What were you going to do after graduation, if you had not converted?(I know, it’s not official, but you have definitely been touched by Jesus). Has a Mormon company or individual promised you sponsorship or work?

I know I’m probably making this seem more difficult, but please, keep praying. God has called you, and his word never returns empty. You have received some good advice already. Call a Catholic Church. Maybe a priest there knows better than we forum posters what you should do. I’ll be praying.
