Fr Hamel’s funeral was today and there were thousands of people present at Rouen Cathedral. A friend and colleague represented the Anglican Church, and he said that many religious traditions were fully present, including Islam.

It was good to have people bear witness to this man’s life (and death) and good to have everyone in one magnificent Cathedral all in prayer together. There is a special grace that happens, I believe, when we come together to pray.
I do believe this too.

I’ve seen a lot of hatred and bile directed at Muslims by Christians in the past 5 months. My high school age daughters have been in tears over some of the vicious things they’ve read on facebook directed at Muslims. Since grade school the Muslim girls were were part of the group that coalesced organically. A group whose parents were not that much into sports, who were low key in kids activities, who we would run into at local museums, nature centers, zoos and local things like music in the park or at the library. Parent who didn’t clothe their kids in the latest trendy clothing with Disney characters be they cartoon or teeny bopper. In high school these girls have been the ones they’ve remained friends with, working on projects in AP and honors classes, socializing in clubs like DECA, Math Team, chess club and NHS.

I’ve talked to my girls long and hard about this, it is an on going conversation that pits the hateful, mocking and dismissive views of distant relatives who are Catholic against the girls they know, girls they hang with, girls who comfort them in trying situations at school. Girls who have sat in my kitchen, family room and in whose eyes I have seen hurt because of what they see on TV and read on the internet.
Wonderful post; thank you, I keep fielding racist abuse on the breaking news site here in Ireland… and always make a point of greeting veiled ladies when I see them. Eyes smile! This is the way forward… Bless you,.

And that Catholics who’ve been not going for Mass come back to it and go for confession.

MJ
Well I’m not sure what Muslims standing in solidarity with Catholics will necessarily do to bring Catholics who’ve not been going to mass back

👍

I’m talking about those Catholics who couldn’t be least bothered about going for Mass. If Muslims could sit in to show support for a man of God like Fr. Hamel who loved the Lord even if it is difficult for Muslims to believe in the Crucified Christ…

Now do see?

MJ

Hopefully a lot of these muslims come back next Sunday as well.

It would be great to get folks involved, and maybe a number of them will be initiated into the Catholic Church.
RCIA should be organized for them.

MJ

It’s a nice gesture. Perhaps those christians will come to a Jumu’ah service. 😉

Perhaps you are misinterpreting their gesture. They came to mass as devout and concerned Muslims to show their compassion about an action a Muslim did against a devout and holy priest. It would be extremely inappropriate, IMO, to invite them to attend RCIA.

No one is being forced. They can announce it and anyone interested can take the offer or don’t. This will also include lapsed Catholics.

Im not sure what is a Jumu’ah service, however this particular gesture was because a Priest a man of God was killed by someone proclaiming God is Great. Meanwhile, I noted the wink.

Jumuah is our holiest day; it’s on Friday. We go to our mosques to listen to a sermon and then we pray together.

Well, the Sunday has come and gone. I don’t think that this will be a recurring event in France. It might be interesting, however, if Catholics return the gesture and attend prayer services in Mosques.

That’s nice. However in what way and readson do Catholics need to show solidarity? :hmmm: This killing was done praising God. So not sure what Catholics can do to show support for?

MJ

How does one attend a Jumuah service as an observer?
You can just stand at the back of the room and watch, I guess. 🤷

You can talk to the khatib after the sermon if you want (the khatib is the guy that preaches the sermon).

Perhaps in showing solidarity - Christians and Muslims - we are saying that God is NOT present in the killing, but in the praying and loving each other. We are always stronger when we are together in God.
