My brother is getting married next year, but should I go?

It’s not so full if he does not know it is. Intention is so important and most likely, obviously he is following his conscience. He doesn’t seem to meet the criteria for a mortal sin

Sometimes I wonder if the poor catechesis of the 1970s- on was partly someone’s twisted idea of protecting Catholics from going to hell. After all, if they don’t know any better (about what constitutes a mortal sin, for instance), then the ignorant folks are protected, in a way, right? They can’t be held responsible for what they don’t know, correct?

Excellent Point.

It’s been very often said that Much False Theology was spread during this time -
which in turn reverberates to this day

God who sees ALL this better than any of us - shall take All into Account re: Judgement

This is something we do not know. We do not know his knowledge of the faith, his reasoning for his decisions, nor how long he has been away from the Church.

To follow our consciences, they need to be well formed, otherwise we can be led into danger.

It is better to follow what the Church teaches.

Spiritual Works of Mercy shan’t ever be halted - and are never JUDGEMENT… 🙂

The Spiritual Works of Mercy

COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL

Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way.
  • Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise" (Prov 19:20)
  • The Cross of Christ “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength” (1 Cor 1:25)
  • Has someone asked you for advice? Orient your response to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
  • Follow Christ with the witness of your life so that others may see God’s love revealed in your actions
  • Accompany a friend who is struggling with believing to join a parish group for service or faith formation, share a book you found useful in dealing with your friend’s faith concern, and worship at Sunday Mass

INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT

Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith.
  • Go on a service trip or short term mission trip. No time? Donate to support someone on their service trip
  • Volunteer to help with religious education programs at your parish
  • Invite someone to go to mass with you this weekend
  • Know your faith! Read through the USCCA to find out more about the Catholic faith and how to live it

ADMONISHING THE SINNER

Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
  • In humility we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times
  • Don’t judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt 7:1-2)
  • When you correct someone, don’t be arrogant. We are all in need of God’s loving correction.
  • We should journey together to a deeper understanding of our shared faith
*Anything Else?

Like I said earlier, skip the ceremony if it bothers one so much and attend the reception.
That’s the worst decision possible. I’m pretty sure that’s going to viewed as a hypocritical move by everyone attending. Also loving doesn’t mean being a doormat and going along with it. There are other ocassions to be loving that are more approriate.

Well, then the pious Catholic isn’t there for the offending ceremony, but can at least show up for the secular party. I think it can be a good solution, potentially.

If you want to cause more controversy that’s the way to go. The reception is a celebration of the marriage so it doesn’t make sense anyways and skipping the boring ceremony and going to the fun party is not going to be viewed favorably.

Honestly, I think a lot of this is going to depend on how chill the brother is.
He might just think to himself “whatever, this is why I’m not Catholic anymore”.

Alrighty then…here is the BEST decision…

To the OP, go directly to your priest and confide in him your anxiety and ask what you should do.
And do not rely on any suggestions and or answers here in an open Internet forum as you may be given the the worst decision possible.

Do whatever he tells you to do.

Rely on your priest and bishops for guidance on such a sensitive matter and let your heart be at peace…

Just remember to love the sinner, hate the sin…
