My brother is getting married next year, but should I go?

To those who say God’s rules make Him legalistic: why is it that instead of submitting to God as He is, we fashion a god that fits our idea of who we think he should be?

The OP might not attend her brother’s wedding on religious grounds.
I’m wondering if any Catholic here has ever been in the brother’s position: Has a family member or friend not attended your Catholic wedding because they are opposed to your beliefs/lifestyle?
It’s not always easy to know unless someone let’s it be known…

This isn’t really the same, but our church has a sign outside it that says “in memory of aborted children” or similar words, and my brother-in-law has said how terrible he thinks that is, and that he would never set foot in that church. He was raised Catholic (and not practicing currently), but I wonder if he will come to weddings, funerals etc there when the times come for those.

I dunno…if you cannot see past the log in your eye skip the wedding and go to the reception…

John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Mark 12:30-31

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength. This is the first commandment.

31 And the second is like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

Why does he think it’s terrible?

I think it sometimes just gets lost on some that we are commanded to love our neighbor, who could be anybody, not just fellow folks of the same ideology and faith…

It would e a much nicer world if everyone lived by that… 😇

Loving others sometimes calls for tough actions because their eternal soul is more important than their temporary happiness. That is why we guide and instruct our children in the right way because of our love for them.

He thinks it’s going to hurt the feelings of women who have had abortions, and that it’s judgmental. He probably thinks it’s hate speech.

To each his own…we witness through love…not through displeasure.
We admonish fellow brothers and sisters, but we show love to our family.
Like I said earlier, skip the ceremony if it bothers one so much and attend the reception.

Do you think everyone who attended the wedding at Cana was as pure as the driven snow?
Yet Christ provided for all who were present…we should be so loving.

The people getting married at Cana had certain requirements they had to follow according to Jewish law.

Exactly! They weren’t living in a pluralistic society, and they weren’t all “doing their own thang”.

You knew each and every one of their hearts and sins?

No, I wasn’t talking about the guests, the people attending the wedding. It was the couple getting married that had to follow Jewish law at the wedding at Cana.

Just like in this thread we are talking about the person getting married following Catholic Canon laws.
It’s not about being sinless but being obedient.

There are no requirements for the guests.

Let your conscience be your guide.

Only you could know what that is…

I did text her wishing them all the best on the day and rang on their first anniversary.
I’m glad she understood and was respectful. That mutual respect is key on both sides. I’m glad that you were respectful of her as well. It’s nice when we try to make things as little personal as possible. I disagree with X so I love you and want to stay connected but cannot go to X. It’s nice that she really understood too as that’s the reason why we sometimes GO - fear that by not going, we are making the wrong decision for preservation of the relationship.
