**Hi everyone, 🙂 **
I was just reading the ‘Different Bibles’ thread, which reminded me of something in my Catholic Bible which has perplexed me no end.

In the final paragraph of Paul’s epistle to the Galatians it reads-: 'Then he develops the argument that it is by faith alone that people are put right with God.'

Disclaimer…I have no issue with Faith Alone, in the context that without faith our works are dead, but with faith, works will naturally follow, not that works save, but show how commited to Christ we are.
**For instance as a Christian I could not sit by and watch someone suffering / in need, if I was able to help in some way, but that doesn’t save me, it just shows God how commited I am to Him. **
I don’t want this to turn into a Faith Alone vs Faith and Works debate, please; I am just interested in any explanation anyone may have for the above text, in my Catholic Bible.

It is a Today’s English Version - second edition c.1992
Australian Usage Text - Revised Edition 1994

Thanks for any insight you may have.

Peace and love

If your bible has “Faith Alone” in any other place than James 2:24, it is a mis-translation. Here is the section from the RSV:
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18 But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe–and shudder. 20 Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead (James 2:14-26)
This passage is often used as the main counter to the “faith alone” heresey.

Another point, I do not think the Today’s English Version (i.e. the Good News) Bible is an authorized version.

TEV is not produced under Catholic auspices, even though you may have a version that contains DC books. Please check out the sticky on AAA or article on the home page about good Catholic bible translations.

Thanks WanderAimlessly and asquared. 🙂

My Bible contains the Imprimatur and the censor deputatus, but I can’t see the Nihil Obstat anywhere.

Thanks again.

Peace and love.
