I’ve been a Catholic my entire life, and never have I reached this point. I’ve had times in my life that lasted for months in which I didn’t attend Mass, didn’t participate in Holy Days, and explored other religions. But that was more out of small doubts and spiritual laziness–this time it is different.
(Some quick background–my mom passed away a year and a half ago after a 5 year battle with breast cancer when I was 4 months pregnant with her first, long-awaited grandchild. I don’t know if this has effected my feelings or not, but I thought I’d put that out there.)
Since losing my mom, I slowly began to realize that horrible things can happen to wonderful, devout people like my mom, and often do. I’ve been struggling with depression and just recently I realized that the only thing that would explain the suffering in this world is that there is no God. I am having a hard time praying because I feel like it’s a waste of time. I used to pray all the time, even in my times of doubt.
My question is–where do I go from here? Have you ever experienced this, and how can I ever find my way back to my faith if all of the evidence points to an atheistic universe? I miss my Catholic faith, I miss my relationship with God, and I miss thinking that my mom is healed in the afterlife and watching her grandchild. Now I wonder if she isn’t simply gone, and that there isn’t anything after this life. I just don’t know what to do. I am so upset by this that I’m finding it hard to get up in the morning and look forward to the day, because what is the point? I could really use your help.
