“Many times I’ve called on Stan (in prayer),” his cousin Kathy said. “And he comes through.”

—They came from Illinois and they came from Wisconsin. They came from Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.

They came from Minnesota–three or four buses worth. At least 16 cars made the drive down from Nebraska.

The many, many, first, second and third cousins of Father Stanley Rother descended on Oklahoma City like the Boomers of old descended on the Oklahoma plains when there was free land for the claiming. But this time, they came to watch one of their own become “Blessed” in the eyes of the Church.

—He was born in Okarche, Oklahoma, USA, and was killed in Guatemala in 1981. On September 23, 2017 he was beautified as a martyr. His feast day is July 28.

I have been blessed over the last 8 years to meet many of the Rothers from Minnesota as part of my job. I can not think of a single one who is not a kind and gentile person. It amazes me that so often certain families are filled with faithful individuals. I always presume there was someone in their family line who was a unrecognized saint who intercedes.

I recently started reading ‘Four signs of a dynamic Catholic’. In one of the early chapters is a story of a family ‘prayer Giant’. A soldier who while under torture continued to pray. That a prayer Giants family reaps benefits that reaches across the generations. This story of this OK priest and his relatives reminded me of that chapter. I haven’t read the whole book, but so far it’s been interesting.
