Once again another poster thinks that I’m encouraging lying which is not the case. Like I said, I will not allow one of my children to spread atheism or apostasy in my household. It’s that simple.
That’s not all you said; there’s a big difference between refusing to allow them to spread an uncomfortable idea and mandating that as a condition of your support they act as if they believe. You are encouraging dishonest behavior. You’d rather your kids keep their mouths shut and go through the motions of a religion they do not accept in order to assuage your sense of piety. Seems like lying to me. Change the roles, would you encourage your Catholic child to shut up and go through the motions of another religion? Or would you want them to be honest and admit what they do/don’t believe?

“The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.”

BlueEyedLady,
I realize that, but there are a lot more people reading this forum thread than just Estevao.

Atheism isn’t just an uncomfortable idea, nor is it simply a “lack of belief” that internet dweebs who follow Richard Dawkins and read websites like “ironchariotswiki” have tried to make it into, it is the belief that God does not exist, therefore it’s an utter falsity lacking in any logic or argument. It is driven by nothing but malice and emotion, and for this reason I absolutely do not allow it to be spread in my home, much like I don’t allow my kids to spread Communism or Nazism in my home, because these ideologies only spread through playing on the fallen natures of human beings, and I will not allow one child to put another child in peril of hell.

Once again, lying is a sin and I will absolutely not tolerate open lying in my household either. My code for raising children has nothing to do with forcing lying out of anybody, it’s really quite simple (which is why I imagine people aren’t seeming to grasp it):

I do not allow the spread of atheism or apostasy in my home. There is no lying involved in bowing your head in prayer or making the sign of the cross, nor with attending mass and refraining from communion. However if a child insists on spread this false ideology, they can procure their own housing.

IN answer to your question, I support the right of my children to believe whatever they want, however there is no constitution in my house. My house is a domestic Catholic church and I cultivate Catholicism in it, not lies like atheism or agnosticism.

You want your children to deceive everyone around them. That’s lying. In mandating that you lose any moral high ground you think you had.

I totally support parents not allowing a child to evangelize beliefs that are against the what the parents are teaching. But, requiring a child to lie to the entire family about something that deep and important is not the same as banning evangelization. To kick a child out of the house for admitting that they do not believe as you do is cruel, and reflects poorly on you and your faith.

As far as “your domestic church” goes: I’m an atheist. There is not a catholic church in the world that would push me out the door for saying that within their walls. I couldn’t evangelize or try to convert people, of course. But no church would require me to pray and make the sign of the cross to stay there.

It is difficult to answer. I know pushing too hard would be bad. I would not require her to go as long as she agreed to sit down and talk about her issues with me every Sunday for 15-20 minutes. Now if she is indoctrinating other kids or causing scandal with them by not attending, those may be other problems.
