My dd who is 33 posted this link on her FB page. I’m more than a little peeved with her right now.

Catholic website says colleges aren’t for women: ‘Learn to be a wife and mother’

I posted this comment
Please understand the difference between personal opinion and Catholic teaching. The media tends not to make a distinction so as to get the most sensationalistic headlines. I hope you’re a little more discerning.
I don’t know how else to respond to this but I felt I had to say something. Personally, I agree with a lot of what this guy said, but I don’t feel the solution is to keep women from higher education. No matter how pure daddy’s little girl is, nothing guarantees she is going to get married to a good guy who’s going to take care of her for the rest of her life. They might split up, he might die, she may not even get married. She’ll be on her own and who’s going to look after her then, her parents?? Should she not be allowed to get the tools to become independent and look after herself?

I’m ticked off about the article, but I’m really ticked off that my dd seems to be holding the church up to ridicule. We have a pretty good relationship but she abandoned her faith as a teenager. I don’t know what to say to her.

I think that response was fine.

While “Fix the Family” claims to be an endeavor of a “Catholic lay apostolate” called Citadel Catholic Media, nothing on their website indicates they are under the direction of any Catholic bishop nor that they have any sort of official standing in the Catholic Church.

So, I would emphasize that “the Catholic Church” says no such thing. A website, which anyone can put up, says this. These folks have not provided any credentials to indicate they are officially recognized as a “Catholic lay apostolate”. Until they do, they cannot be said to be speaking in any official Church capacity.

It is distressing to hear someone promote such an idea regarding women and education, under the banner of Catholicism and it feeds the already hostile attitude that people have about the Church teachings.

It’s especially hard when that suggestion is intertwined within a valid Catholic position on the immorality within colleges attached to Universities. I know here in Aus. even the Catholic colleges have an abnormally hedonistic environment that seems to be endemic in Universities.

I try to be as honest and uncomplicated as I can when correcting a position thats put out there with some valid points but an unbalanced conclusion added. Seagal, you could even be direct and matter of fact in saying that Church teaching does not advocated keeping girls from higher education, but that the moral teachings of the Church promote purity and chastity both pre-maritally and in marriage.

Thank you LongingSoul, that’s helpful.

I think you responded well.

If she is going to post things on FB that ridicule the church, then she should also expect to be corrected in that public forum. I do the same with family and friends who post stupid things about the church on FB.

Hopefully she will ask you to explain what the church actually teaches about this, so you can go deeper into it and clarify her misunderstanding.

It’s because of morons like this that our Church and faith is as attacked as it is. He really should just stfu.

Apparently she did not link to the site which is being referred to. Rather she linked to “rawstory.com.” However, if she wants to criticize the viewpoint of this particular blog, why not link to the blog itself and let readers decide whether they agree or disagree. I never heard of it before. But third party sourcing is usually a bad idea. It’s like taking a report on Lfesite News of some other site’s article at face value without checking the source.

I am a very devout Catholic, and the video just makes me want to bang my head into the wall. That guy is not promoting real Church teaching. Sports and education are NOT the problem. I do not think that guy is actually approved by any official Church entity. If the Church really had a problem with educating women or letting them participate in sports or dances, then the Catholic colleges and universities that are faithful to the Church would not still have female students, women’s sports, or social activities.

I just realized something…does the guy in the video have a problem with St. Gianna, who was a pediatrician? What about Blessed JPII’s “Letter to Women”? He thanks women in all roles in society. He has a paragraph for mothers, daughters, women who work, and consecrated women. In his paragraph on women who work, he specifically says,

“Thank you women who work! You are present and active in every area of life-social, economic, cultural, artistic, and political. In this way you make an indispensable contribution to the growth of a culture which unites reason and feeling, to a model of life ever open to the sense of “mystery”, to the establishment of economic and political structures ever more worthy to humanity.”

Yep…the church totally hates it when women get a degree and go to work…

That’s the first thing I thought of, the media is blowing things all out of proportion again. But I went right to the source to see what it really says and for once the media didn’t have to exaggerate anything.

DD said what disturbs her is that this is what is portrayed as Catholic values. But reposting it without explanation makes her implicitly part of the growing throng of Catholic haters who constantly hold the Church up for ridicule. It feels like I’ve been kicked in the stomach.

I’d feel kicked in the stomach as well.

So I guess this means that she understands that the church does not teach what the article suggests. That is a good thing, and perhaps you can have a conversation about what the church actually teaches on x, y and z.

Yes, I went to the blog in question to see what the fuss was about. The controversial blog at least gives a greater explanation for its positions than the secondary source does. Actually, most of the reasons the blogger cites for not sending a daughter to college could be applied equally to sons, so I can’t agree with it. But note that there are over 3,000 comments following it, pro and con. It’s certainly not a Catholic position–it’s a blog! So yes, it wasn’t appropriate for the girl to cite a secondary source seeming to say ‘this is what Catholics think.’ But surely, anyone should be more discerning than to take a random blog as an official Catholic position.

And I do think that the OP’s response to the daughter was right on target in pointing out the difference between personal opinion and Catholic teaching.

You responded well. I would have been tempted to say something like “If you promise not to post links to stuff like this as if the Catholic Church teaches it, I’ll promise not to post something that comes out of Camille Paglia’s mouth as if she speaks for every female professor in higher education.”

Lol, what that guy said was great, all the hate filled comments were disgusting, but I’ve come to expect nothing less from the so called “tolerant” left. One guy was calling for the mass arrest of all the “religious right” and got 22 up-votes. Liberals and feminists are truly deranged.

Seriously? You actually think keeping young women at home and uneducated past high school until they can be passed off to a husband is a good idea? Thankfully, the Church doesn’t hold those views.

So 12 years of education isn’t enough now, we need to make sure we tack on 4+ years of it, along with the tens of thousands in debt that usually comes along, just so we don’t get accused of misogyny?

Is what he said wrong? Will women and men actually be learning anything about family values at a university? And how about the precipitous fall in religious service attendance and belief that happens when children attend colleges these days, with all the promotion of debauchery and atheism that goes on there, what about that?

Given the tidal wave of feminist, anti-family propaganda that a woman will be subjected to when going to a university, even a so-called “catholic” university, I think a little pro-family advice isn’t out of line. But I guess the liberals and feminists don’t actually value diversity and tolerance, which is why they seem to be calling for the mass arrest of people who think like that guy.

What I’ve always thought would be great is that we reverse the whole career, then family way the feminists promote things, and instead promote women having and raising children between the ages of 18-40, when they are fertile and healthy, and then afterwards they can work on going to college and get a career if they want. But how we usually do it now is that there’s a mad dash for a woman to have children when her biological clock is almost out, and when the risk of birth defects are high. Plus then the woman has a career to attend to and the child doesn’t get much in the way of quality family time, but instead usually gets put in a day care, then sent to public school…

I purse my lips when I read comments like those (mean spirited, insulting, clear ignorance and hatred) that get heaps of up votes and the ones that are more sane are either ignored or laughed it. The internet sometimes pisses me off.
