My family is on Obamacare

I do favor a single-payer system, but Obamacare is what everybody has to work with now. You shouldn’t feel guilty for using it.

And as a tax payer in a developed nation I would expect my tax dollars to be spent providing a certain level of medical care to those who can’t afford it. It is the same as I expect fire and police protection regardless of anyone’s ability to pay their fair share. I view it as money well spent if I get to benefit from a country without a sick and diseased population.
I agree with all of the above. And it was refreshing to see your post as I haven’t found many Catholics today taking your POV. Especially if this forum is representative. In any case God bless you.

i also favor a single payer system (with some hesitation). My biggest hesitation is, under the current direction of our country, can you possibly imagine single payer being supported without that insurance also cover abortion? I can’t. It’s a foregone conclusion that in today’s political climate, along with single payer comes federally funded abortion.

Sorry, last comment. It’s actually been liberals and supporters of Obama trying to make this exact point that there is no such thing as “ObamaCare” health insurance.

Here is Senator Angus King on it:

“You know, there’s no such thing as Obamacare,” King told Fox News Sunday. “You can’t sign up for ‘Obamacare.’ You sign up for an Anthem policy or an Aetna policy or a WellPoint policy. It’s private insurance,” he said.

Oh good grief! I spent the last few years listening to how the sky was going to fall because of Obamacare. Now that it is the law and it seems to be somewhat successful, the story is that there is no such thing! Obamacare consists of mandatory medical insurance with private companies - that’s what it is! There was never any true National Health Insurance because people weren’t read for that.

I see your point.

Are you responding to a different post? I don’t mean to be rude, but I honestly don’t know what you are responding to.

I never said obamacare was all bad. I pointed out that the Aca, like most bills, produces both winners, who benefit, and losers, who end up paying more.

My only point about there being no such thing as obamacare health insurance is to clear up confusion a lot of people have that you “get obamacare” partially to tell the op that she shouldn’t feel bad about getting health insurance through the exchange, even if she found parts of the Aca morally objectionable.

I think in you must have me confused with some conservative critic of obamacare. As I mentioned before, in an ideal world, I would support single payer.

I don’t know. I know birth control has often been covered long before Obamacare partly because sometimes it is needed for health concerns. Women do have the legal right to choose an abortion without restrictions at least in the first trimester whether we like it or not. So maybe.

Exactly. This is why, if America ever adopted single payer, politicians and abortion rights groups would insist that single payer insurance policies must cover abortions. This means, unlike (arguably) now, our tax dollars would be required to pay for abortions. One of the reservations I have about single payer, even though in general I think it is the best option to provide insurance for those in need and bring down the spiraling cost of health care in this country.

Obama himself hasn’t read the bill for “Obamacare”. He doesn’t know what’s in it. And your family signed up for it?

Beware the death panels is all I can say.

:yup:

The government shouldn’t be propping up those who do not succeed in the free market. **Private charity and private institutions such as religion should take the torch in helping out those in need. **

That would happen more if the government would just get OUT of it and be a regulator.
And what about when private charity doesn’t provide enough? Just let people starve and go homeless? This is where the GOP stance strongly contrasts with the teachings of Jesus. This forum would make Him sad many times over, I think.

I hope you’re being satirical. “Death panels” are like the most ridiculous myth. It’s like saying, “Beware the Yeti on your next hiking trip.”

Yes, it would appear as though the OP signed her family up for healthcare! Gasp! How could she do such a thing?

OP: Don’t feel bad or guilty. You’re doing what’s best for your family. Anyone who tries to shame you is putting politics before true Christian teaching.

Also, Obama could cure cancer, world hunger, all diseases, and create peace in the Middle East, and this forum would still condemn him. It’s likely due to a lot of the people on here watching a TV channel whose sole purpose seems to be smearing the President as well as any of his followers.

It controls cost by denying services. Happens all the time in Canada and the UK.

It’s not insurance; it’s the government deciding who lives and who dies.

That’s too general and confrontational, I might add. There are lots of people on here who support President Obama. “This forum” hardly has one voice, and the prior comment just seems to elicit sympathy for the President.

What TV channel would that be?

Not everyone agrees with President Obama, and frankly his policies have been one failure after another.

FDS - Fox Derangement Syndrome

But the endless conga line of Obama apologists and water carriers on MSNBC and CNN are A-OK! 👍

The problem is that nobody has the courage to let the losers wither and die. If the winners will be responsible for the losers healthcare eventually it will be cheaper to pay preventative care rather than let things escalate to an emergency. There is such a thing as being penny wise and pound foolish as Easterjoy was pointing out.
Courage? It takes courage to let the “losers” die?

There are many terms I would use to describe this attitude. Courageous is definitely not one if them.

I always hear that argument and it fails drastically. Because before Obamacare it happened all the time in the US that people were denied or forced to ration their healthcare services because they couldn’t afford the cost. By healthcare I don’t mean a trip to the ER when things got dire. I’m talking about adequate healthcare like preventive care, dr checkups, regular prescriptions, things like that. Obamacare is not perfect. Some still can’t afford the cost. But more can.

2 good questions. Which is why I agree.

Private charity will do much better than the government, because private charities are bound by the free market forces.

The government wastes money on corruption and its own selfish interests.

The teachings of Jesus are about individual generosity. Too many people use government as an excuse so they can avoid the heavy lifting.
This forum would make Him sad many times over, I think.
Again, I wouldn’t be generalizing about the forum. It’s too diverse.

See post # 59.

There is no right—Constitutional or otherwise—to an abortion.
