I went to confession with one priest right after he was ordained - it was a frustrating experience. I left feeling that he didn’t have a clue. I was bad about going to the same priest all the time after that then decided that whoever is available was who God wanted me to go to. When I later went to the same priest, I felt more comfortable and felt he had more of a clue.
just a reminder to those who don’t know or sometimes forget, that confession during the ordinary hours when other people are waiting, should be straight forward - confession, absolution, done, and out. the Sacrament has been completed - you are forgiven. there’s no need to chit-chat or talk about your problems.
as for advice, guidance, spiritual direction, consoling, etc., that should be done either outside of confession, at a confession appointment, during spiritual direction, etc.
we shouldn’t base the quality of confession on how we feel afterwards, or whether or not the priest was of any help. it is a done deal promised by God, that once you are absolved, you are forgiven. feelings, although great at times, are not what it’s about. it’s supposed to be about you and forgiveness from God. advice is extra. otherwise people would stop doing it once they stop feeling good or when the priest doesn’t give good advice.
imagine being in the most difficult time of your life, at the lowest, your world is crumbling, and you are dying for just a simple kind word, but the priest goes through confession like a robot and doesn’t add anything else. you feel hurt, but how was he supposed to know? he only knows that he is there to provide the Sacrament for you, and he has. you can now seek guidance and consoling from either him or somewhere else after you have finished confession.
(sorry to single your post out, i’m not implying you do this).
