Incest is is sex between parent and child, uncle/aunt with nieces/nephews and brothers and sisters not cousins. It is legal in the State of VA for cousins to marry, and I’m sure in many other states.
Yeah, like Kentucky, Arkansas, and West Virginia maybe. Hence the jokes…They must come from reality somewhere!

It does not seem right and rather perverted somehow. Yuck.

I believe marriage between 1st cousins is also legal in California and many non-Southern states.

The real question is not whether we find it perverted or yucky, but what does the Church teach? I am pretty sure that 1st cousins can be married but only with a dispensation. I am not sure what the full story is. It would be nice if someone could explain it.

It’s explained on the first page of this thread.

Do you have any references or anything? It seems this question pops up from time to time. I’d like to be able to point people in the right direction. Thanks.

In many cultures, a first cousin marriage is ideal for keeping the family business and money in the family and for marrying well.

There was a couple some time ago featured in the news who are biological siblings who are together. For some reason, they were not raised together. That seems to be the biggest issue when finding people attractive. Growing up with them tends to make a person biologically and emotionally rule them out. When people from the same family have been separated and then are brought together, especially during late adolescence while hormones are high, it is not uncommon to have a physical attraction. This person is a mirror of you in so many ways, conscious and unconscious, that teenagers and young adults without that childhood history find the family member attractive.

Then you have that woman who found her biological dad and secretly married him…

Yes… it’s in my later postings on the first page of this thread 🙂

I always thought the ban on incest was because marriage to close relations had higher incidences of birth defects and metal problems. Some thought the problems with the Egyptian rulers and the nutty Roman emperors were the results of incest.

And taken to extremes, we are all cousins in some way or another. We all have common ancestors in Adam and Eve.

Do you mean they married but never told anybody, or that they married but she never told him she was his daughter, or that they married but he never knew it?

They knew they were father and daughter when they secretly married.
