SF80, you have to remember as a husband, we have to love our wives as Christ so loves the Church. To me that means I have to sacrifice for my wife. Your suggestion of letting the wife “take charge” as you put it, feels to me like Pilate washing his hands…the ol’ “no harm, no foul” routine. Hey, I have no culpability in this, right?
I feel that is part of our problem in western society…we have forgotten what a tremendous responsibilty marriage is. I have had to learn that the hard way, trust me. My journey has been rocky to say the least. But I have come to understand the importance of marriage and how that mirrors the Holy Trinity. As frustrating as my marriage can be at times, I realize I would be a far lesser man without my wife in my life. I love my wife deeply, I truly do. I cannot see myself with anyone else even when I am mad, angry or disappointed. I also believe that in my vocation of marriage, one of my jobs is to help my wife get to heaven (as it is equally her responsibility to help me).
When one changes their perspective to view marriage that way (at least for me…) the lens you look through makes difficult times easier to endure and joyful times even more joyful! I look forward to the day my wife opens her heart once again and comes back with great anticipation and hope. It makes my prayers for her more authentic and honest. I am excited for that day!
Marriage is not a competition on who can do more, make more money or be a better parent. If that level of control or competition is there, my suggestion is earnestly start seeking good Catholic marriage counseling. If one of the spouses is not willing to do that, well yes, it makes it a difficult burden to carry. However, one must put their trust in Christ in that situation (or any difficult situation for that matter), as we know God will not give us a cross we cannot carry.
I will pray for your friend you mention that he sees his marriage and his spouse for joy in his life it needs to be.
