My husband is spiritually draining me

My husband abandoned the Catholic Church before I met him. I converted to Catholicism 6 years after marrying him. He loves me and tries to make my life better but lately he has just been draining every drop of faith, hope, and love out of me. He has no friends, even though everyone really likes him he doesn’t put any effort into having friends, doesn’t confide in anyone, and generally doesn’t really care about anyone else. I am his sole friend and emotional support, and he rarely even talks to me.

I’ve tried to talk to him about participating more in our family life, but he is withdrawn and mostly busies himself with chores, television, and internet. He doesn’t agree that he is self-absorbed because he does house repairs and chores and works hard for my benefit and the benefit of the children. He just thinks it’s boring to have conversations, and we don’t ever do any family fun things because he thinks kid stuff is boring. In fact, he is bored by everything that is not one of his hobbies or interests (which are fishing, tattoos, hard rock music, Islam, and porn). He can also be very negative, everything irritates him, people irritate him, he can’t tolerate being hungry or having a headache or being bored.

It’s really difficult that he is solely dependent on me to be his “rock.” I always have to boost his spirits or make him feel good about himself or make sex more interesting. He spends the money he makes freely and I take care of the finances all by myself, so normally I just make sacrifices or charge things in order to get by. His aloofness puts off my friends and sometimes he is rude and alienates them. When he talks about something like politics he says things like, “All the politicians are #$% worthless. What we need to do is invade Mexico.” My friends don’t talk like that, it just makes everyone uncomfortable. The thing that set me off just now is that on FB he just posted that he couldn’t wait to get home and "get a piece of #%$, " and then called me to tell me about it. I am embarrassed, and a lot of my friends will see that, and he says my problem is I am too prude.

He used to be really kind to other people and respectful of me. He used to have friends. He used to talk to me and be more interested and involved in our marriage. He said I am boring since I became Catholic. Everyone thinks I am this living saint that is going to bring him back to the Church, but I have all but lost hope. He doesn’t spend any time with me, and when it comes to my problems, like being organized, exercising, disciplining the children, feeling lonely, habit-forming, and recovering my health, he says, “I can’t really do anything to help you because of my job (he only works half the year), so if you are going to make things better you have to do it on your own.”

I just feel like I am on my own, like I married the wrong person, like we have less in common as time goes on. He won’t convert, he doesn’t even want to talk about Catholicism. I don’t even feel like praying anymore. I don’t feel like being loving or even being around him as much any more. I know I have to keep trying but I am really falling into despair.

Frankly, I would have to separate myself and my children from such a situation. Whether that meant staying single the rest of my life or taking a look at my marriage to see if it ever was a valid marriage.

You mention that he was a fallen away Catholic when you married him, so I presume you married outside the Catholic Church without a dispensation for him to do so. That would be an invalid marriage. So, did you two convalidate your marriage when you converted?

It is a rare time when I tell someone to get the heck out of dodge. This is one of them. He sounds like he has some serious mental problems.

I agree. As I was reading the OP’s post, at first I thought “Austism Spectrum” because of the lack of friends, any social life, and not having any social skills. Then later she said he USED TO be really kind and talk to her and have friends, and that would not be consistent with Asperger’s or ASD. Then she said 2 of his hobbies are Islam and porn. That tore it for me.

OP, I’d separate and discern if marriage is even possible with such a person. Talk to your priest ASAP.

Your husband is emotionally abusive. The porn has got to go and what’s with his interest in Islam? And that was awful of him to put that on FB. Lack of respect big time.

I would call your local battered woman’s shelter and talk to a counselor. None of this will be new to them and it might help you to here what they think, and to instruct you on your rights. Definitely talk to your priest but also talk to a lawyer to know your rights. The consultation should be free. If it isn’t, go to another attorney.

exoflare, he has always been interested in religion, when I met him he was reading a little bit of everything so was reading about Islam then, and then after our oldest was born he was really absorbed in his job and our marriage. Just within the past year he has started being interested in religion again but only Islam right now. He started looking at porn when I started RCIA, about the time he started doing overseas contract work. This is something he did at work and has not and will not enter our home. He did say he stopped looking at it but when he is at work he writes me dirty emails instead of love letters and keeps on pressuring me to send him nude pics, so I would say if it has stopped then his new hobby is pornographic fantasies of me. There is really no way of knowing because on the job site he has his own room and tv and they have access to all the channels. Most of the men over there watch pornography, and he has or is making the effort either not to do it or hide it from me because he knows I will go ballistic if I find out he is still looking at it. When he is home it’s the opposite of work, he doesn’t say dirty things and rarely even touches me, and all music television or internet is rated g.

1ke, yes, we were married in the Church a week after my Baptism and Confirmation. Leaving is a remote possibility, we have 6 children under 10 and one of them has a chronic illness.

Monica, thank you for your prayers! I did talk to my pastor first and he thinks my husband is very spiritually confused from his upbringing and is having a mid-life crisis. He says to keep showing him that I care, that means a lot to my husband. He won’t go to counseling, he doesn’t really think other people’s opinions have any value and that almost everyone is stupid. He tries to hide himself, especially problems or imperfections. I casually mentioned it to him and he thinks he can fix it himself or we can fix it together and said no way would he ever go to a marriage counsellor.

I think I also feel like the burden of his soul is on my shoulders, since the priests I have spoken with and my Catholic friends all seem think I will bring him back to the Church or pray him into Heaven. I can’t.

Talk to a good and holy Catholic priest, possibly one from the FSSP. I strongly recommend that you pray the Rosary as well the chaplet of divine mercy daily. Also go to confesion and (if you can) pray before the Blessed Sacrament. you also mentioned that you have sex with your husband, you should stop having sex with him if you use artifical contraception (which is a Mortal sin). Do not forget that Our Lord Jesus Christ has an infinite love for you your children and yes even your husband (however that does not mean that he isnt sinning and thus offending Our Lord). Put all your trust in the most Sacred heart of Jesus and the immaculate Heart of Mary.

Your last paragraph shows that other people can be very wrong. You are NOT responsible for his soul, that is the job of the Holy Spirit. We can never take on that kind of responsibility! Please do not accept that burden that is not yours to carry!

OP, I am very sorry to hear this, and I wish I could offer some suggestions but it seems as though you’ve already attempted some solutions (being encouraging to him, trying to build him up) to no avail.

You said that all the men at his work site watch pornography. Do you happen to know the wives of these men on a friendly basis? Do you think they are having similar problems as well? And if so, do you think you could discuss this with them?

It sounds to me like it is time to make an ulta matum. Tell him you are sick and tired of his (for the lack of a better word) **** and that he needs to clean himself up.

One of the things that I found attractive about him initially was how popular he was at work. He has a really strong work ethic and a lot of people open up to him about their personal lives because he is extremely intelligent and a good listener. A few years ago he told me that he has studied a lot about body language and social skills so that he can maneuver social situations. He said that people generally like him but that he always has been a loner, he doesn’t connect with anybody except me, and that he never opens up to anyone. He said he is a black sheep in his family, his grandmother told me he was always withdrawn and serious. He even said although people have always invited him to hang out with them, he declines. He is still popular at work and in his clubs and he runs a charity, but he never calls these people and when they invite him to do things with them he declines.

I don’t use contraception, I am a believing Catholic and quit before my baptism. I have talked to 3 priests, it is just very hard and I need prayers and encouragement. Thank you for your advice on prayers, I go to Adoration weekly.

I’m no psychologist, but this screams classic sociopathy/antisocial disorder to me. The ability to manipulate people, and to fit in with others while at the same time keeping an emotional distance…🤷

That would be my first instinct as well, but I don’t know how feasible this is, as the OP has six children under 10 yrs of age. OP, do you have any financial/habitable recourse to separate for a while?

He said before that he used to worry that he was a sociopath, but he does care about me and the children and my parents and his brother. He used to have a friend that he cared about, but the friend became really strange and they don’t talk anymore.

Jesus said he didn’t come for the healthy but for the sick. Either your husband is a high-functioning autist (Asperger’s syndrome) or pretty messed up things happened to him when he was a boy (I think you alluded to him having had a tough childhood). I can see how he could benefit from God’s healing if he could only go to the Sacrament of Penance. Nothing is keeping him from healing, grace, God’s friendship but his stupid pride, foolishness and spiritual blindness (I apologize for being blunt). He needs all those things, badly usccbmedia.blogspot.ca/2011/07/confession-it-puts-you-straight-with.html He just sounds like a very angry man who has a chip on his shoulder. His interest for both pornography and Islam put him in the same league as Bin Laden, BTW. I understand he was a decent husband up until the moment you converted 6 years into your marriage and that things have steadily gone awry from that point on? It’s been suggested, but I think the chaplet of Divine Mercy would be a good place to go to. There’s one that I especially like, I would say to pray it simply by entrusting your husband to the Father’s mercy (since he probably was lacking in a father), try and free yourself of some of the weight that’s on your shoulders, you’ve got more than enough on your plate with 6 kids without being your husband’s mommy. He needs God’s grace to realize he needs to go to Confession. Confession would be the starting point. Here’s the link youtube.com/watch?v=__RbWgxA2G0 God bless you, Joanne, and I pray that God will give you comfort and rest.

You shouldn’t have to deal with his behavior. It’s disrespectful. After a certain point, I think you should move on from your husband. It sounds like his behavior has changed over time, and you shouldn’t have to be miserable in life because of it. By all means, if you think he needs medical or psychological help, then try to get him to seek it, but his emotional distance from everyone would make me rather nervous. Be careful.

His next job will take him out of the country for 3 months, but I think living separately while he is home would destroy us financially as he can be irresponsible with money. I think that the time apart because of his work is probably a cause of this disconnect, during my conversation he worked away from home 80 percent of the year for 2 years, so we have both grown older and changed, apart from one another, and him being away from family life a large part of the time.

I’m not sure if he’s Asperger’s or a sociopath. Whatever he is, he isn’t anywhere close to normal. Have you seen any sign of autism spectrum in your kids? It is genetic for sure. Someone who is ASD might say he is studying people to maneuver social situations, but they wouldn’t mean it in a creepy way. A sociopath would be doing it in order to have power over others.

I’m pretty concerned about your husband. And to have him working overseas, I assume in a Muslim country, with access to porn… Not good, not good at all.

May I ask you, what attracted you to your husband in the first place? Was he charming when you met and dated? Did he woo you? If so, I’d put him in the sociopath category.
