Really, he was convicted? I think that you need to read up on him:

Conclusion
A review of all the relevant documents demonstrates that:

The court hearing of 1826 was not a trial, it was an examination
The hearing was likely initiated from religious concerns; i.e. people objected to Joseph’s religious claims.
There were seven witnesses.
The witnesses’ testimonies have not all been transmitted faithfully.
Most witnesses testified that Joseph did possess a gift of sight
It was likely that the court hearing was initiated not so much from a concern about Joseph being a money digger, as concern that Joseph was having an influence on Josiah Stowell. Josiah Stowell was one of the first believers in Joseph Smith. His nephew was probably very concerned about that and was anxious to disrupt their relationship if possible. He did not succeed. The court hearing failed in its purpose, and was only resurrected decades later to accuse Joseph Smith of different crimes to a different people and culture.

Understanding the context of the case removes any threat it may have posed to Joseph’s prophetic integrity.

I know of no other trial before 1826, I think that you still need to get your facts straight.
Maybe you are the one who should get the facts straight.

If it were just an “examination”, there wouldn’t be a guilty verdict, by a court.

ils.unc.edu/~unsworth/mormon/jsconviction.html

“And therefore the Court find the Defendant guilty.”
  • Joseph Smith’s 1826 court transcript; see Abanes, One Nation Under Gods, p. 501
An examination is similar to arbitration, and can lead to a decision in favor of one individual over another, but not a “conviction”. Also, an “examination” doesn’t refer to a party involved as a “prisoner”.

But hey, let’s not let FACTS get in the way.

And, what you’re referring to as an “examination”, is the Judges bill for handling the case. That doesn’t mean the case was not a trial.

Even the BYU Law website calls it a trial

Did Mrs. Smith and Rev. Walters retain all the records relating to the Joseph Smith trial?

Greetings everyone

This is my 1st time posting…well I came from a catholic background so therefore I do consider myself catholic…my husband is mormon but doesn’t not practice the religion…meaning he doesn’t go to his church…anyway…for years now his family has tried to convince me to convert to mormon…well I did consider it but was very disapointed when they were comparing their religion to others…how their church is “the true and only church”…how if anyone is not sealed in the temple they would not be allowed to enter the kingdom of heaven? I have asked myself why they think they are soo sure they are saved? Why do they think their religion is superior of all others?( of course they do some major trash talking about these other religions , don’t want to get into details) Wouldn’t only GOD know these answers?? I have only kept my mouth shut since I really don’t know what to reply to such ignorant people??What are your thoughts ?
The only people the LDS church agrees that will not be in heaven are those who reject God. The LDS church teaches and believes that there are different levels of Heaven. So those who believe in God and are not apart of the Mormon church will still have a chance to be in heaven. Once they die they’ll be given a chance to work their way up to the higher (closer to God) levels of heaven.

But of course if they are wrong and the Christian church is correct. They our LDS friends are in big trouble.

Your in-laws aren’t only misrepresenting Jesus by putting their faith in the LDS church, but they are misrepresenting the LDS church by what they are sharing with you.

P.S this might have already been said…but I don’t have the time read the whole thread…so I’m sorry if I’m duplicating responses.

Blessings!

I didn’t know I had to be politically correct…I was told by my inlaws and missionaries that Mormons believe that there are different “levels” in heaven? These are the Celestial kingdom, the Terrestrial kingdom and the Telestial kingdom. so, does that mean we will be judged according to our works and therefore, each one of us will be judged differently??. Even if two people both live good lives, they will be judged differently and therefore receive a slightly different level of glory?? Sorry if I’m not using mormon terminoligy!! I’m not mormon…😉
Well, at least now you are using mormon vocabulary. 🙂 And this makes it all more likely that your inlaws did not say that you could not go to heaven if you were not married in the temple. The three degrees of glory is in the new testament. Paul mentions the celestial and the terrestial.

.40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

And so here we see where mormons get their doctrine from these verses by Paul. 🙂

Paranoid much?

Believe it or not, not everything is about you.

But good try.
When I declared myself mormon and catholic, it suddenly became all about me. Not by my choice to be sure. But now that I am only happy go lucky, the pressure is off. I would recommend being happy go lucky to everyone.

Like I said, it’s not all about you.

Whatever floats your boat

LOL try reading the verses surrounding. He’s talking about the resurrection, and the distinction between our current bodies and our resurrected bodies, not the levels of Heaven.

Don’t you ever tire of calling people liars?

Catholics also believe the part I bolded.

David Persuitte’s book does cite some sources which prove that Stoal was successful in his conviction. There was involved in that case a certain peep stone - I’m half sure that this was the same peepstone which later shows up in narratives during the translation process of the Book of Mormon.

I don’t know why some LDS apologists feel threatened with the possibility that the suit against Smith was successful. Really, what does it prove? I mean, so what?
It was a phoney charge by one of Josiah Stowell’s relatives. Josiah became a mormon and remained faithful throughout his life.

By J Stowell, Jr

These two letters say much about Joseph Smith.

You really don’t know what I’m talking about… Never mind. Your mind is closed to the possibility that Stowell was successful in court. I glanced upon a webpage earlier and it refers to court transcripts dug up in 1971, which is I think the same place Persuitte got his information. Anyway, you should become more familiar with the specifics of the case before dumping more apologetic text here.

Further, why is the prospect that he lost in court so threatening?

LOL try reading the verses surrounding. He’s talking about the resurrection, and the distinction between our current bodies and our resurrected bodies, not the levels of Heaven.
We see what we want to see. Some can see three degrees of glory. You see what you see. When we die, we will find out the truth. Lets hope for the best. 🙂

Because the antimormons bring this up over and over again. And the OP also brought it up and most likely she got it from antimormon sites. But it is not true. Now what I posted is a letter written by Josiah Stowell, the person who was named in the suit by his relative. But Josiah believed in Joseph and believed in him until the end. He knew Joseph very well as did his son.

And here are the facts of the trial. It is not mormon apologetics. But it is one side to the story.

The Mormons borrowed the belief of ‘glories’ from Emmanuel Swedenborg. There beliefs aren’t even based on bad proof-texting of St. Paul.

Yes, Catholics agree that people see what they want to see in the Bible. Thus we have the multitude of versions of Christianity, as well as multiple versions of Mormonism.

Just so everyone can see what “I” see, I’ll post the context of the verses:

1 Corinthians 15:35-49 KJV

35But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?

36Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:

37And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:

38But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

39All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.

40There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

41There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

42So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

43It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

45And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

46Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

47The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.

48As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

49And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Thanks. The Mormons borrowed the belief of ‘glories’ from Emmanuel Swedenborg.
No problem! I posted the context above. Yes, there are many similarities between Mormonism and Swedenborgianism. They too believe in eternal marriage.

Thanks. The Mormons borrowed the belief of ‘glories’ from Emmanuel Swedenborg.
I hate to be a party pooper here but Swedenborg got his interpretation from Paul also. He read the verses and came up with his own interpretation. Paul mentions different degrees of glory. See my point?

Many antimormons bring up the Swedenborg connection without realizing that Paul mentions it in the bible. Thus, this idea was not unique. Swedenborg read it, and came up with an interpretation. Swedenborg was no dummy. And Joseph also read it in the bible and we have mormon doctrine through revelation. See the point?
