Take a break from these people. I know it is hard, but you deserve some peace and there is nothing you can do about your mother-in-law’s illness.

More to the point, be a place for the FIL to go to escape his abuse, support him in the goal of ending it or leaving, and do not enable his attempts to deny that his wife is in fact abusing him.

I think another good read is called “Stop Walking on Eggshells”.

I’ve read that book before. It is a good one. I think we may get it for my FIL

That’s pretty much what we’re doing right now. She’s not my MIL though. My MIL lives in another city.
