My New Roman Missal from Midwest Theological Forum (lots of pics)

Here below are pics of the missal cover I bought from catholicembroidery.com. As before, the cover is not a snug-fitting sleeve. It’s loose enough to let you open the missal freely without the spine of the cover binding against the book. The zipper closes just shy of the ribbon collection at the bottom of the missal.

I ordered mine in brown with a Gille cross and my last name on the front. A nice touch added by the vendor was a St. Joseph medal to the zipper pull. I’m saving up my nickels and dimes now to order a cover for the New Jerusalem Bible I rescued from the remodeling of the parish rectory.

I’m looking to purchase a new missal, as I only have the 1962 version that was my grandmothers.

Quick question, if anyone could help.

In church, I notice they pass out the St Paul edition for use during mass.

What, if any, are the differences between the new MTF, St. Joseph (set of 3), and St Paul versions of the new missal?
 
We were advised by the priest not to buy a new missal because there are further changes to be made . I think he was referring to the readings .

Does anyone know about this ?

I am pretty sure he is wrong. I wish they would change from using the New American Bible to RSV 2nd ed. I also notice that the Entrance Antiphon doesn’t match up to the music. I was told that is because the music wasn’t updated at the same time?? Hopefully that will be fixed soon.

I purchased my New Missal about a 2 weeks before Easter. Other than the weight (which I am not really complaining about) I do have one complaint, in the 1962 Missal there are several prayers for before and after communion I wish these had been placed on the New Missal as well. Other than that I love it have had several people at Mass comment on it, ask were I got it and plan to get their own.
 
I’ve been using my MTF Roman Missal regularly since the 1st day of Advent. I also got a nice protective cover for it that was recommended on this thread.

When I first got the book I noticed the front and back covers (or the bookboards) were very tight. They were hard to open so that the book would lay flat when placed on a table. I figured this was mostly because the book was brand new. I was careful not to bend the front or back bookboards too far to avoid tearing the endsheets glued onto inside of the the front and back bookboards where the main body of the book hinges to the bookboards at the front and back edges of the spine.

I thought the endsheets would stretch or loosen over time but it appears they’re tearing a bit. I think what’s happening is, with the plastic protective cover on, plus holding it from underneath with one hand at the spine during mass while turning pages with the other hand, the front and back bookboards tend to bend back too far and are causing the endsheets to tear a bit right at the hinge. Personally, I think the book bindery glued the endsheets too tight to the bookboards, and they should’ve given it a little more slack, else I’m unknowingly bending those bookboards too far back.

I don’t want the endsheets to completely tear away from the bookboards at the edges of the spine, and then the bookboards to completely fall off the book. Is their any way I can reinforce the endsheets to stop the tearing?

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? It’s such a well done missal otherwise.

On my previous missal, when the endpages tore from the bookboards I used a dab of Shoe Goo, carefully applied, to repair them.

I just purchased (well, yesterday :)) a missal for my son, who is 21 today.

I had the store put his name on the cover in gold. I bought him the dark burgundy cover. I hope he likes it. He told me that he had started to go to daily Mass as often as he could, since the last semester was very hard on him. So I thought he might like to have the “program,” so to speak, of the Mass.

Now I have to find a reason to buy one for myself! 😉
