Four months into the new translation, I have made the following observations:
- People are generally doing all right. There are a few rough spots. For example, people want to add “one” before “consubstantial with the Father.” It’s like a really small hiccup in the Creed.
- Things generally break down during the Sanctus (and this is from attending Mass, both Sunday and Daily, at four different parishes). It’s pretty standard. It’s the bell curve. I’ve observed people running in about five different directions (I fall into the third group):
- Correct Version (about 25 percent of people): Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts.
- Old Version (about 25 percent of people): Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might.
- Incorrect but try to correct (about 20 percent of people): Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and hosts.
- Correct but get pulled off base by people who got it wrong (about 20 percent of people): Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts and might.
- People who are completely lost and just are jumbling words together (about 10 percent): Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts…power…might…universo… dominus deus sabboeth…help…
- Everyone seems to be on the same foot during the Memorial Acclamation. I think that this is because it’s either totally new wording (A&C) or substantially (consubstantially? pardon the pun) the same wording (B).
- Another place where every goes off in different directions is in the “Lord I am not worthy” where people go take off in directions similar to the Sanctus. I think that happens because no one has their misselettes or prayer sheets out because they’re kneeling.
