Thing:
They heard a great eathquake as an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the great stone. The guards at the tomb were struck with terror and became as dead men.
Ben Masada:
Why, because of the “angels” or because they saw Jesus coming out?
When they saw the Angels of the Lord. Jesus was resurrected that morning and, as God needed no-one to release Him from the tomb nor to open it.
Thing:
And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here,
Ben Masada:
Do you see? The “angel” came down removed the stone and sat on it. Then, he said to the women, “He is not here.” What happened? Even the angel cannot be taken as an eyewitness because when he removed the stone the tomb was empty. Jesus was not there as he said
.
The Angel removed the stone when the women arrived so that they may see that the tomb was empty and that Jesus had been resurrectd from the dead on the third day as He had said He would be, and as the chief priests and Pharisses also said He would be.
Thing:
for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid.
Ben Masada:
When, if that was Saturday at sunset?
Sunday morning actually, as the Gospel states, and the third day, as Christ said He would rise on the third day.
Thing:
And going quickly, tell ye his disciples that he is risen: and behold he will go before you into Galilee; there you shall see him. Lo, I have foretold it to you.
And they went out quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, running to tell his disciples.
Ben Masada:
Now, how did the disciples receive the news the women brought from that angel? The answer is in Luke 24:11. The disciples found that their story seemed like nonsense, really an idle tale, and refused to believe them. Why? I’ll tell you why: Because they had never heard about such a thing from the lips of Jesus. That’s why. If those disciples living almost four years with Jesus on a daily basis found the report about the resurrection an idle tale, how could we today, after two thousand years be expected to believe a tale that just won’t cease to be more idle?
Please, have mercy
!
Again you have even less belief than the chief priests and Phasisees had in Jesus’ statement that He would rise on the third day. That was why the chief priests and Pharisees went to such elaborate measures to secure jesus’ tomb, remember. The chief priests and Pharisees knew what Jesus had said, they also knew, they said, that Jesus’ disciples knew that Jesus had said He would rise on the third day.
When the Apostles heard that Jesus’ tomb was empty on the morning of the third day they recalled what Jesus had said to them, that He would rise again on the third day.
As St Thomas said on seeing Jesus again; “My Lord and My God”
Thing:
Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done.
Ben Masada:
What things had been done? Do you have any idea about those things? Did they see Jesus rising? What did they tell the priests? And did the Priests give to them, money to spread that the body had been stolen? I wish you had quoted that part so that I could tell you that you have confirmed that the Centurion was well-paid by Joseph of Arimathea to deliver Jesus’ body to Joseph without that so-called spear-piercing. Next time.
The guards told what they had seen: The Angels of the Lord appearing when the women arrived. The Angels rolling back the great stone in the door of the tomb with the sound of thunder to reveal an empty tomb. The guards were terrified and became like dead men. That is what they told. That is what the saw.
Here is the quote you asked for:
11 Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done. 12 And they being assembled together with the ancients, taking counsel, gave a great sum of money to the soldiers, 13 Saying: Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away when we were asleep. 14 And if the governor shall hear this, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15 So they taking the money, did as they were taught: and this word was spread abroad among the Jews even unto this day.
The chief priest and Pharisees knew something that you don’t know. They needed a dead body in the tomb on Sunday morning to give lie to Christs’ prophesy that He would rise from the dead on the third day.
In spite of all of their safeguards Jesus rose from the dead, and now the chief priests had witnesses to deal with, in the figure of Roman guards, whom they felt the need to pay to get them to lie that they were asleep and the body stolen.
It was a disaster for the chief priests.
If the guards had actually been asleep and the body stolen the chief priests would not have bribed the guards to say they were asleep.
The bribery simply proved two points; firstly that the chief priests themselves knew that Jesus was dead, and that His body had been sealed and guarded in the tomb. They would not pay a huge bribe if they knew He was still alive.
And secondly it proved that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day as the witnesses who were on duty all that night had to be paid to lie.
