My Opinion: No Piercing At Jesus' Side

Swariffin, I have the dates for the writing of the gospels in the Saint Joseph Catholic edition of the New American Bible sponsored by the Bishops’ Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. If you don’t believe what I am saying, find that edition in the Library and check it out. Mark came out in 70 soon after the destruction of the Temple, Luke in 75, Matthew in 85 and John between 95 and 100 CE.
Ben: 🙂
Ben there is a debate over the dates. The ones who put together the edition you have accept one date that does not mean the Bishops do. You will find a wide range of dates. They are not absolute. The Church does not officially teach any particular date.
Warren H. Carroll in his history 'The Founding of Christendom" says that Matthew was written in 40, Luke 61-62, Mark 55-57 and John he dates to 95. This book footnotes are chapters unto themselves. The dates you quote are of recent history.

**What this piercing with spear has to do with Jesus? I had asked in a previous post if Jesus died due to stab. Nobody replied. Some one denied that. I would again ask the same question, “What has that stabbing with a spear to do with the whole affair?” If Jesus was already dead, the stabbing did not do any harm and need not be pursued.

But if Jesus was alive and it was necessary to hasten his death by a stab, that would be different.**

Gabriel of 12
Here’s a question Ben, before you run off to far with your personal interpretations of history. Were you there to eyewitness the accounts of Jesus to authenticate your bias view? If you were not there, then leave up to the witnesses who were there and recorded these oral teachings after the “Way” or Catholic church grew in communities where these oral teachings were put to letter.

A Review:
Think of a Jew aware of Roman History defending
a Jewish issue and a Gentile who is only desperately trying to hold his non-Jewish religion from not cracking. I think that’s not too hard to see where the credentials are.

That is an answer? Think of a a Jew who goes against history to desperately hold on to a theory. I know where the credentials are. They are not with you.
If there is a desperate here, it has to be you. When Christianity started, Judaism existed for thousands of years.
One has nothing to do with the other. You are not logical

No, I am working on your beliefs. Jews are more intelligent than to believe such a slander. First because when the
guards were set at the tomb area, Jesus was no longer in there. No wonder when Mary Magdalene soon after sunset of that Sabbath went to see the sepulcher, the stone was removed and the tomb was empty. Second, what night did the guards spend watching that empty tomb if they were put in there Saturday morning and the tomb was empty at sunset? (Mat. 27:62) Last but not least, who would believe in the story of the guards if they were sleeping? (Mat. 28:13) Sometimes it helps to think. You should try for a change.

No logic here. They were afraid of the Jesus being stolen so they didn’t check to see if He was still there? Pretty stupid of them. Ben I try really hard not to answer your insults. I do think you are not helping your argument and such insults make me believe you are desperate. Because I don’t believe what you try to say, does not make you right.
COLOR=“Blue”]During those 40 days Jesus never exposed himself publicly. He would appear to his disciples in secret places. Then, you are assuming that Jesus was a celebrity. Many people even in Israel and even at that time had never seen or heard of such a man. Do you find that impossible?
I find your argument not substantiated by the facts. He was seen by many. Gossip is one thing you cannot stifle. Letting a prisoner escape meant death. Why do you think that the guard was going to kill himself when he thought his prisoners were gone. Historically your are wrong.
Listen my friend, you should not put too much into this issue if Jesus was spear-pierced before or after he died
because if he died from that alleged piercing, he died of a stab wound and not from being crucified. Therefore, Christians can no longer claim that Jesus died from crucifixion. So, ponder on these
implications. I don’t think your Catholic authorities will approve this trend.
There you go again making a statement without proof. You yourself said He had given up His Spirit. That was before the spearing. Besides I don’t see that it matters how He died, He died for us. 🤷

** Gabriel of 12**

Jesus did not die from a stabb wound or the piercing of his side.
The piercing of Jesus side prevented any bones of Jesus from being broken, when the Sabbath was nearing and all the corpses had to be taken down, they broke the legs of each victim so as not to escape. But Jesus was already dead, the soldiers speared his side in an act of mockery because they new he was already dead and did not need to break his legs.

This is providential because the Hebrew law dictates for the Lamb sacrifice to God not a bone will be broken, and the prophets prophecy is fulfilled here who prophecised that the Messiah’s not a bone of his will be broken.

So Jesus gave up his Spirit for you and me for our sins, so that we might live.

Peace

Way to go, Planten! Your point is brilliant. But don’t expect too much understanding because the patches of faith
are too strong on the eyes of the faithful.

You were not there either. So, between a Jew who is aware of Jewish things and a Gentile who is moved by faith, it’s only obvious that I am more of a witness than you.

Gabriel of 12

You contradict yourself again;, The very first Christians were all Jews, it is these first century Jews who you are disagreeing with, who upon eyewitnessing the Messiah became Christians for 2000 years now. You are not more of a witness to these Christians only to your Jewish traditions that are not practiced today as the first century Jews did with the temple.

If you look very closely at how Catholics worship God, you will find the fulfillment of the old covenant. For example, we have the lamb of God sacrifice, offering of the blood of the lamb and his body, the hidden manna, bread from heaven, the waters from the “Rock” still run in the Catholic church. That is just an introduction;

So no you are not more of a witness to first century Judaism for the first century Judaism is still practiced and fulfilled in Jesus Christ in his Catholic church. What you are is close to disappearing according to the Hebrew prophets.

Ben
That’s quite different from believing something reported 50+ years after the alleged facts.

Gabriel

No it is not, because I could go to the library and read a 100 year old newspaper or article. What is historical fact is witnessed by Christians, Jews, and Pagan Rome. Your 50+years theory does not hold up to What is recorded and believed 2000 years. Good try though:)

Peace be with you

That’s a hypothetical proposition. We don’t need to prove a hypothesis. If it doesn’t matter how Jesus died, you need luck that a Catholic authority won’t criticise your statement as a heretic innovation.

Well my friend, the whole of the NT is debatable.
Who is not aware of this? I am glad that I am not the one who set those dates for the writing of the gospels. And I am glad that the source I am using is Catholic. If these are not acceptable, it only
means that the Church is divided.

Ben: 🙂

Gabriel of 12:

Ben I think you confuse the issue here; The Catholic church has both the apostolic oral Tradition supported by the Written Sacred Scriptures. The date debate from theologians or biblical scholars do not define the authenticity of the New Testament, for these are Canon and cannot be refuted. As far as Scholary work and or opinions does not negate the Catholic position of the bible or New Testament, She does not divide herself on this already canonized books.

Both of the above statement are ad hominem attacks. I can understand why. It is an old ploy. If you cannot see that this is not a logical answer, than it would explain a lot.

It seems that you cannot explain your position without this type of attack or being condescending both of which only entrenches the notion that you have no idea what you are talking about. :nope:

I really do not know who is the confused here. Why don’t you pick up a Saint Joseph’s edition of the New American version of the Bible? The people who wrote those prefaces to the gospels are Bishops from the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Why don’t you blame them with all this confusion? I am not the one making up the things here. I am sorry pal, I know how you feel. But I can’t do anything to help you.

But they were not the Apostles. Those were the converts of the Apostles. Nazarenes, that is, whom Paul would invade their synagogues and reconvert them back into being Christians. They were not eyewitnesses of the Messiah, because
Jesus was not the Messiah. The Messiah of Christianity was Paul. I mean, by proxy.
You are not more of a witness to these Christians only to your Jewish traditions that are not practiced today as the first century Jews did with the temple.

This reminds me of the Book of Mormon. A complete plagialism of the Scriptures.
What you are is close to disappearing according to the Hebrew prophets.
This is what Gabriel of 12 says. How about Jeremiah, what does he say on behalf of God Himself? Take a look at Jeremiah 46:28. I will make a end of all the nations to which I have driven you. But of Israel I will not make an end. I will only chastise them as they deserve. Can you tell me again who according to the Prophets are close to disappear? Now, you tell me whom should I pick: Gabriel of 12 or Jeremiah? Not too hard to choose, don’t you agree?

The guards spent Saturday *and *Saturday night guarding the tomb. Pilate dispatched roman guards to the tomb at the instigation of the jewish leaders who had, incidently and according to themselves, everything to lose if the body went missing, hence their approach to Pilate himself for help. So as well as setting a Roman guard on the tomb, the jewish leaders had *that *guard set by the orders of the Fifth Procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate, himself, personally. On top of that they even went to the lengths of sealing the stone door. Do they sound like the stupid types who would seal an empty tomb, they were scared, suspicious and meticulous in securing the tomb containing Jesus’ body.

Gospel According to Saint Matthew

On Friday Joseph asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate commanded the body should be delivered. Joseph took the body and on Friday evening laid it in a new tomb and rolled a great stone to the door and left.
The two Marys stayed, sitting near the tomb,
The next day, Saturday, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate and said that Jesus was to rise from the dead in three days. They told Pilate to command that the tomb be guarded until the third day lest His disciples should steal Him away. Pilate commanded the tomb to be guarded with roman guards and guarded as the chief priests and Pharisees knew best.
And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards.
At the end of Saturday, the sabbath, and towards dawn of the first day of the week, Sunday, the two Marys returned to the tomb. They heard a great eathquake as an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the great stone. The guards at the tomb were struck with terror and became as dead men.
And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid. And going quickly, tell ye his disciples that he is risen: and behold he will go before you into Galilee; there you shall see him. Lo, I have foretold it to you.
And they went out quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, running to tell his disciples.
Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done.

Gospel According to Saint Matthew
Let me enlighten you with first class information if I may. First of all, I have been to Jesus tomb in the Old City, in the Church of the Sepulchre. One cannot see the body from the entrance. I had to walk about 100 meters to arrive at the place where he was laid.

It was only in the next day Saturday, and not too early in the morning, considering that Pilate was never to earger to attend at silly Jewish complains. Let’s say about ten o’clock when finally the Chief priests got their audience to ask for a guard to watch the tomb area. (Mat. 27;62-66)

Now, Priests are forbidden by Law to enter a tomb or even a gravyard for two reasons: For being a priest, and especially on the Shabbat.

After that Sabbath, Mary Magdalene came with the other Mary to inspect the tomb. After the Sabbath. Do you happen to know when is “after the Sabbath” in Israel? It’s at the sunset. It was not yet too dark because, as the NAVB says, they came to inspect. And the KJV says, to see the sepulcher. One does not inspect or see in the dark. What did startle them? That the stone was removed and that the tomb was empty. What happened? It happens that the tomb had been empty since Friday evening, when no other than Joseph of Arimathea had done the removal himself. (Mat. 28:1).

Then, to set the guard at place that Saturday, and seal the tomb
the order from Pilate was not to the soldiers but to the Priests. (Mat. 27:65,66) As I said above, a Priest could not enter that tomb, for it was Sabbath and they were priests. The soldiers would not do anything more that just watch. And you must know how souldiers are.
. They heard a great eathquake as an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the great stone. The guards at the tomb were struck with terror and became as dead men.
Why, because of the “angels” or because they saw Jesus coming out?
And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here,
Do you see? The “angel” came down removed the stone and sat on it. Then, he said to the women, “He is not here.” What happened? Even the angel cannot be taken as an eyewitness because when he removed the stone the tomb was empty. Jesus was not there as he said.
for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid.
When, if that was Saturday at sunset?
And going quickly, tell ye his disciples that he is risen: and behold he will go before you into Galilee; there you shall see him. Lo, I have foretold it to you.
And they went out quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, running to tell his disciples.
Now, how did the disciples receive the news the women brought from that angel? The answer is in Luke 24:11. The disciples found that their story seemed like nonsense, really an idle tale, and refused to believe them. Why? I’ll tell you why: Because they had never heard about such a thing from the lips of Jesus. That’s why. If those disciples living almost four years with Jesus on a daily basis found the report about the resurrection an idle tale, how could we today, after two thousand years be expected to believe a tale that just won’t cease to be more idle?
Please, have mercy!
Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done.
What things had been done? Do you have any idea about those things? Did they see Jesus rising? What did they tell the priests? And did the Priests give to them, money to spread that the body had been stolen? I wish you had quoted that part so that I could tell you that you have confirmed that the Centurion was well-paid by Joseph of Arimathea to deliver Jesus’ body to Joseph without that so-called spear-piercing. Next time.

Ben: 🙂

The site has seen 2000 years of distruction and construction. Read the history, it was razed and rebuilt many times. The entrance now goes through many pieces of construction from different centuries.
The tomb where Jesus was buried has a small Chapel outside it called the Chapel of the Angel which has part of the stone which was rolled away from the entrance to Christs tomb on Easter morning. A description:
Standing at Christs tomb looking in through the door on the east side and by stooping low, one may enter in a quadrangular chamber about 6 feet wide, 7 feet long and 7 ½ feet high, On the north side, about two feet from the floor and extending the full length, is a marble slab covering the sepulchral couch. Floors, walls and ceiling have also been covered with marble slabs.

I’ve already said that on the Saturday the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate. Where you get the rest of those additional details is a mystery. Did you make them up yourself or have you a source telling you the time the chief priests got up in the morning, or a source for how Pilate felt about them on that Saturday… not that it matters, the Gospel says they went to Pilate on Saturday.
Ben Masada:
Now, Priests are forbidden by Law to enter a tomb or even a gravyard for two reasons: For being a priest, and especially on the Shabbat.
They did not need to enter the tomb to see inside, read the discription above of the tombs dimensions. No chief priest or Pharisee would seal an empty tomb. They were worried and suspicious;
"And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards. "

Wrong again. Let me remind you of your own words, act on them;
Ben Masada:
I am working on your beliefs.
OK. So lets stick to our beliefs and re-state what the Gospel actually says about this:

Gospel According to Saint Matthew

The resurrection of Christ.

1 And in the end of the sabbath, when it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. 2 And behold there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and coming, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.

It is obvious that at dawn on Sunday morning the two Marys went to the sepulchre and *then *the stone was rolled back by an angel of the Lord in the presence of the women and the Roman guards.
Describing the angel when he rolled back the stone;

3 And his countenance was as lightning, and his raiment as snow. 4 And for fear of him, the guards were struck with terror, and became as dead men.

Peace
**Gabriel of 12, may I assure you that Pilate was working to save Jesus. That is abundantly clear from the passages of the bibleNT. When Pilate failed to satisfy the Jews, he washed his hands and gave up Jesus to be crucified.

The punishment for balsphemy was not crucifixion. It was stoning to death.

Pilate had secret men working during the Crucifixion. He appointed special persons (Centurian and his squad) so as to protect Jesus. It was the Centurian who had said “Surely, he (Jesus) was a Man of God or a pious man.”

It was the Centurian who gave the verdict that Jesus was dead. The plan of Pilate to crucify Jesus at a late hour on Friday when next day was a big Sabath, that was anothe rgood move by Pilate to save Jesus so that Jesus does no remain on the cross for too long time.**.

Thing:
They heard a great eathquake as an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the great stone. The guards at the tomb were struck with terror and became as dead men.
Ben Masada:
Why, because of the “angels” or because they saw Jesus coming out?
When they saw the Angels of the Lord. Jesus was resurrected that morning and, as God needed no-one to release Him from the tomb nor to open it.
40.png
Thing:
And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

.
The Angel removed the stone when the women arrived so that they may see that the tomb was empty and that Jesus had been resurrectd from the dead on the third day as He had said He would be, and as the chief priests and Pharisses also said He would be.
40.png
Thing:
for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid.
Ben Masada:

Sunday morning actually, as the Gospel states, and the third day, as Christ said He would rise on the third day.

Again you have even less belief than the chief priests and Phasisees had in Jesus’ statement that He would rise on the third day. That was why the chief priests and Pharisees went to such elaborate measures to secure jesus’ tomb, remember. The chief priests and Pharisees knew what Jesus had said, they also knew, they said, that Jesus’ disciples knew that Jesus had said He would rise on the third day.
When the Apostles heard that Jesus’ tomb was empty on the morning of the third day they recalled what Jesus had said to them, that He would rise again on the third day.
As St Thomas said on seeing Jesus again; “My Lord and My God”
40.png
Thing:
Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done.
Ben Masada:
What things had been done? Do you have any idea about those things? Did they see Jesus rising? What did they tell the priests? And did the Priests give to them, money to spread that the body had been stolen? I wish you had quoted that part so that I could tell you that you have confirmed that the Centurion was well-paid by Joseph of Arimathea to deliver Jesus’ body to Joseph without that so-called spear-piercing. Next time.
The guards told what they had seen: The Angels of the Lord appearing when the women arrived. The Angels rolling back the great stone in the door of the tomb with the sound of thunder to reveal an empty tomb. The guards were terrified and became like dead men. That is what they told. That is what the saw.

Here is the quote you asked for:

11 Who when they were departed, behold some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done. 12 And they being assembled together with the ancients, taking counsel, gave a great sum of money to the soldiers, 13 Saying: Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away when we were asleep. 14 And if the governor shall hear this, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15 So they taking the money, did as they were taught: and this word was spread abroad among the Jews even unto this day.

The chief priest and Pharisees knew something that you don’t know. They needed a dead body in the tomb on Sunday morning to give lie to Christs’ prophesy that He would rise from the dead on the third day.
In spite of all of their safeguards Jesus rose from the dead, and now the chief priests had witnesses to deal with, in the figure of Roman guards, whom they felt the need to pay to get them to lie that they were asleep and the body stolen.
It was a disaster for the chief priests.
If the guards had actually been asleep and the body stolen the chief priests would not have bribed the guards to say they were asleep.
The bribery simply proved two points; firstly that the chief priests themselves knew that Jesus was dead, and that His body had been sealed and guarded in the tomb. They would not pay a huge bribe if they knew He was still alive.
And secondly it proved that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day as the witnesses who were on duty all that night had to be paid to lie.

Gabriel of 12, may I assure you that Pilate was working to save Jesus. That is abundantly clear from the passages of the bibleNT. When Pilate failed to satisfy the Jews, he washed his hands and gave up Jesus to be crucified.
Just so, he gave Jesus up to be crucified.
