My parents are first cousins, am I going to hell?

I used to get teased by all my class mates in school because I was “inbred”. My teacher told me not to tell anyone because they would hate me. I think inbreeding is morally wrong and I am ashamed as I have always been.

As far as Christianity is conserned I was told by an Evangelical that I was damned because I am a product of inbreeding and nothing more so I had no soul. Then she said if I do have a soul then it would spend eternity burning in hell.

That’s where the fear came from.
I’m so sorry that happened to you :(. The ignorance of some people is mind boggling (and a teacher no less!). And that so called “Christian” girl is the reason that radical Atheism has gained a foothold-they think we’re all like that!

Please don’t be ashamed of yourself. Being the product of Consanguinity (“inbred” is such a pejorative term!) is not morally wrong. It happened in the Bible all the time (and not as one of those things that was just “allowed” but later condemned, like plural marriage). I just had a thought: I wonder if that Evangelical girl believes in the literal 6 day creation account as it’s laid out in Genesis. I think most Christians of that stripe do. If so, how does she think the earth was populated? It had to be by Adam and Eve’s children intermarrying, which is brother and sister, closer even than 1st cousins! And then there’s Noah’s family after the Flood repopulating the earth-all 1st cousins! See, people like that don’t ever think, they’re too busy condemning everyone to hell.

Congratulations on your relationship, I pray it works out for the 2 of you, and I hope you stick around the forums.

In Christ,

Ellen

Yeah I told her that if she is the measure of a Christian then I am ashamed to call myself one. I asked her about the 6 day creation and the population of the Earth and it seems she just doesn’t know. Maybe it’s a front bak up with little or no knowledge.

Thanks, we’re going away to Greece for a fortnight in July on our first holiday together and first on our own so we’re both looking forward to that at the moment.

I don’t post too often but I’m often lurking around reading through!

God bless

Don’t you wonder what kind of God the “Evangelical” imagines?

Through Jesus, the God of our Faith is the God of love and eternal life. God is love. Even our finite human sensabilities are offended by the idea of an innocent burning in hell for all eternity because they were born. This is not love!

Our God of Infinite Love jealously desires each soul he has created to freely choose to love “Him.” Somehow, each of us is His favorite and He wants each of us to be with Him for all eternity - but He want us to choose - He “is dying” (and literally died) to love us.

Like the Holy Trinity we will be One with Him, yet a distinct person in Him, with Him and through Him. And we will not only have a soul, like Jesus (the eternal second person and first born); but like Jesus, we will have a resurrected body (not a resuscitated one) - we will be body, blood, soul, and divinity in Him sharing His life fully, yet distinctly. That is only a glimpse of the mystery of the Holy and Almighty One of our Catholic Faith! Who can tell us in human words the mystery and glory of our God that Jesus revealed to us?!

I am curious as to why you think an action of your parents would condemn you to hell. You will be judged on your own actions, not those of your parents.

Presumably you are a Catholic asking this question – the Church that baptized you also prays for your salvation – which will have nothing to do with whether or not the marriage of your parents was regular or irregular, but rather with you own cooperation with God’s grace.

That same grace, by the way, is also available to your parents, despite any irregularities in their relationship.

I know it was wrong for them to marry and have me and my sister but am I damned?

I am physically fine so it did not affect my health but I am very afraid that I may have to pay for their sins as a “result” of their sin.

Please help me.

Lord have mercy.
If your parents are from Kentucky, it is proper and expected.

What kind of “Evangelical”? What church did this person go to? Unfortunately, the word “Evangelical” (like the even broader word “Christian”) can be misused by all kinds of wackos who believe monstrously evil things–and this is a particularly disturbing example.

I find that in certain denominations they have a " kill the wounded’ mentality. I have been condemned to hell on a few occasions!

“Breeding” is for animals. Humans freely cooperate in the divine plan. Their freedom can be to a greater and lesser extent, but we are essentially free in our choice of marriage.

Besides carrying a greater risk of passing on different human imperfections, both material and spiritual, consanguineous relationships close people in on our own family, ignoring the enriching and sometimes more difficult process of reaching beyond those we know best and who are most familiar to us. Great similarity in modes of thinking and acting is observed in siblings and to a lesser extent in cousins. These similarities make it easier to relate.

That said, we all have imperfections! and there’s certainly nothing you can do to change the past. It may be even easier for you, having a more closely related ancestry to be able to see your imperfections and deal with them. It’s only by approaching Christ as we are, imperfections and virtues and all that we make any real progress in life.

I wish you well on your continued search to grow closer to Christ and be more of the person he wants you to be. Enjoy your trip!!

pax,
Peter

In the beginning there was 1 man and 1 woman, where do you think we all came from. I found out that my Grandparents on my fathers side were first couusins and also my Great Grandparents, many first cousins married in prior years, do not worry about being inbread, you will be fine.
God Bless

Just a quick post. I am really sorry you’ve been told some awful things.

My best friend married her first cousin two years ago. I was shocked at the time but after doing research found that there is nothing wrong with it. In fact Abraham and Sarah where first cousins just to name loads of couples in the old testament. Mary and joseph were possible first cousins.

The fetal abnormalities is only an issue when first cousins marry cousins then first cousins marry first cousins, then first cousins marry first cousins. This is what the media has caught up on with the muslims arranging marriages to cousins in the UK.

You won’t go to hell for your parents sins (and them being first cousins is no sin). Bless you.
Primrose:thumbsup: Oh and by the way my best friend is having her 4th baby in a few months and her children are robust and healthy

Thanks mate.

Lol yeah there’s always re-runs of it on somewhere! Cardiff is a lovely city, I want to stay here for the rest of my life.

My parent’s aren’t Catholic and are now divorced. So however valid it was it isn’t any more.

However it may relieve everyone to hear that I have been with my (Catholic) Girlfriend for almost 3 years, we haven’t had any problems we are best friends aswell as boyfriend and girlfriend.

We will get married in a Catholic Church, raise our children as Catholics and send them to a Catholic School. Even if my parents didn’t go about things the right way I promise I will!
Have you thought about becoming a Catholic yourself. My first husband, (now deceased) said to Father, as we were having our 3rd son baptized, “Father, I’d like to learn more about the Catholic Faith, my wife’s Catholic, my sons will be raised Catholic and I want us to all go in the same direction.” He was a very happy Catholic, ( and so was I). God Bless, Memaw

All I know is she calls herself an Evangelical, I think she goes to an “All Nations Church”.
She is very religious and preaches at everyone which does irritate people but we were at a party last month and she got really drunk and i found her topless in her underwear on the bathroom floor passed out. It appears she puts alot of her beliefs on to get attention because she is so vocal about it. Personally I keep my faith as a personal matter.
I would question the kind of parties you attend, if I were you!!! Memaw

Zamudio, quit listening to your “evangelical” friend. 😛 And know that we are not responsible for the sins of our parents.

:hug1:

You’re not going to go to Hell because you’re parents are first cousins.

You would go to Hell if you committed a mortal sin and died without repenting. But that’s independent of your parents being first cousins.

Even if your parents were Democrats, you determine whether you accept God’s saving grace given to you free of charge; albeit, being born to Democrat parents will be a terrible curse: “Where sin abounded grace abounded all the more.”

Ellen thank you for saving me from writing exactly what you wrote!

There must be at least five links between the marriage partners and their common
ancestor(s) for the marriage to be licit in the eyes of the Church. Therefore, anyone less closely related than a second cousin would be okay, though I rather imagine that a dispensation to marry a second cousin is fairly easy to obtain. In the United States, all states permit marriages between second cousins; some ban marriages between first cousins.

My paternal grandfather (who was Lutheran) married his first cousin. Their child had a birth defect and died young. My father was not a fruit of this marriage, but of my grandfather’s second marriage after his having lost his first wife.

Of course, you are not responsible for anything that your parents did, even had they been Catholic. Interestingly though, there was a time, and not so long ago, when having been born illegitimate would have prohibited a man from becoming a secular priest. If he felt a calling for a vocation in that direction, he would have had to have found an order to accept him. I personally don’t see any merit or justice in such a position.

P.S. If you have siblings, they are both your brothers/sisters and your double first cousins once removed.
