I apologize to all. We had to check one more thing, and that was whether the store that sold these statuettes actually had gold ones in stock.
They did, which pretty much precludes any further serious contemplation of this matter.
I mean, there were several of us who firmly believed we saw them in silver when first presented, and they turned clearly into a gold color (I think that would be freaky enough, even if it were not real gold).
But because there is this alternative and entirely rational explanation, I have to bow out of this thread, with egg on my face.
Cheers, and I wish everyone a great Lenten season…!

Ugh, I meant to write an update a long time ago - soon after I posted the above.
May God forgive me for my laziness, if I have led anyone astray because of this.
As it turns out, I now firmly believe that this statuette changed – the people who have 2 statuettes are a couple. The first time there was a change, we could have sworn the wife’s was silver – but because both were gold now, we assumed we were mistaken. I may have said this before, but I for one do not like to find “miracles” where completely rational explanations are available. Anyway, after that, the wife’s statuette turned
back to silver. I was in the elevator when my friend called me, and when he told me I could hear his wife shouting in the background (out of excitement and/or fear) and I remember the hair stood up on my neck. And then it happened again – that statuette turned from silver back to gold. Because no one knows hardly anything about who I am, and most certainly no one will know who my friends (the couple) are, this story can be completely made up – conceivably, my friends could also be playing a hoax on me (based on my years of knowing them, however, I believe this is not the case).
In any event, I just wanted to clarify – I used to think this kind of stuff was wishful thinking, a hoax, or perhaps even of the devil.
However, now I firmly believe that sometimes these things happen, and they are signs of encouragement from God – like He is saying "Hey, I really am here. See ? (
zzzzzzzing - changes silver to gold) "
On another note, earlier this year my cousin, a protestant, angrily rejected my proposal that she wear a Miraculous Medal before her cancer surgery. Then, 2 weeks after our call, she showed me a picture of a Miraculous Medal that mysteriously “appeared” in her room. Because of my experience with these statuettes, I was not so fazed, and told her “I have seen things like this happen before”…
To me, these are miracles – of course, not anywhere close to being able to pass the scientific scrutiny that is required for medical miracles at Lourdes, for example. However, I think for the vast majority of us, these little thin strands in life which we receive from time to time become enough to make a thick – and unbreakably convincing – rope.
