Hi all,

I just received the news this morning. Hell be 18 in a few weeks. My heart breaks and my teen daughters too.

It’s still fresh in my head since he just told me. I cried very much. I will miss him terribly and my heart is breaking really.

I am only here for a bit of support or advice, anything.

Thank you for any encouragement you can provide.
Our son is in the Corps for 3 years now. It’s the best thing that ever happened to him. It is understandable that you are concerned for the safety of a child, but don’t let it get out of hand.
You want what’s best for him, right? The Marine Corps is very demanding, and it will bring the absolute best virtues out in him. It will make a good person excellent.

Yes, it is a branch of the armed forces and the world can be a dangerous place, but men and women are needed to do this service. God bless him for making this commitment.

I might add that our son is in the south Pacific, and we have not seen him in over a year. It is difficult, but good people can do difficult things.

Thank you so very much, for serving your country and serving your brothers and sisters in Christ here, on this forum.

I’m learning terms like MOS. He doesn’t know what he wants to be. I learned after basic training they’ll send him somewhere for years to train.

No more summer family vacations. Will he be home fir Christmas. …these are the thoughts occupying my heart.

Ofcourse, thank you. It’s going to be an adjustment. Like no more annual family vacations, Christmas

I know I need to let go but boy it hurts incredibly.

Oh really Edward?

Tell that to USAF TACP’s, Combat Controllers, Combat Weathermen, Pararescuemen(PJs), and even Security Forces, and all the other USAF Special Forces.

Appreciate all that, but Edward is correct. Not to the diminution of one or the other, Marines are a cut above.

Well, probably not “years”. The standard enlistment is four years. It wouldn’t make much sense to spend the whole time training him only to have him get out as soon as he’s fully trained.

But yes, he can take leave. Not always exactly when he wants to, but he’ll likely be able to take leave at Christmas. Not guaranteed obviously.

Not much to say it’s part of the plan. give him rugged rosary tell him you love him. Semper Fi

The Marines are not a “cut above.” They fulfill a special purpose in the US Armed Forces.

The Marine Corps would be totally impotent without the USAF.

The USAF would be ineffective without the Marines.

People who denigrate one branch of the Military or exalt one against the other show they are ignorant of how the Armed Forces work in the US.

The Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard essentially function together as one cohesive unit. The Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are all under the command of the Secretary of the Navy in time of war.

The Army and Air Force likewise function as one. The Air Force began as an organ of the Army, and still works jointly with the Army constantly. One of the biggest USAF bases, where all enlisted airmen go for BMT (Basic Military Training, or colloquially boot camp,) is in fact a joint USA-USAF base - Lackland AFB (Air Force Base), which is part of Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA.) Joint Base San Antonio consists of the United States Army Fort Sam Houston, the United States Air Force Randolph Air Force Base, Lackland Air Force Base and Martindale Army Airfield.

All 5 function together as individual parts of the body called the US Armed Forces.

It is irresponsible, untrue, and a statement of ignorance to claim any one branch is somehow better than the other.

Thank you. I respect all branch of military. This thread is about my heart breaking. It’s almost comical that my job hasn’t noticed my red face but I count that as a blessing , especially working with people I sense would gloat at my being sad.

Thanks everyone, for helping your sister in Christ. I believe my life will change alot. My daughter cried this morning too, she’s gonna miss her best friend she says.

Thank you. I will do that. I think once he joins I’ll be praying the rosary every day. (Which I know I should do but sometimes get tired and dont focus as much…no more)

You’re welcome. My brother was in the marines. So I understand the stress it can create in a family. It did make him a far better person; and I hope the same for your son.

The Marines really are very different.

Here is a perfect example. I enlisted initially (later received a commission) while in grad school. I wanted to do something for my country, as my father and brothers had. So I figured a short stint in the military couldn’t hurt.

I went to a recruiting station which had all four major services, and decided to hear them out…when I went into the Army office…the first thing I noticed was the joking around and posturing and messy office…no thanks…Navy…the fatness of the sailors, the Air Force…video games…

I walked into the Marines…and there were Marines in their service uniforms but with skivvy shirt tops…they were having a pull up contest using a chinup bar that had been screwed into the door post.

The more senior looking of the Marines turns to me and says…“hey stud…why don’t you mount the bar and show us what you’ve got”.

A canyon’s difference.

You and I know this to be true. My Dad served in the Airforce. I almost joined too. Everyone working together is how we’re protected.

It’s the over the advertisement that says it all.

The topic was individual motives…an 18 year old seeking to become more, not to “get GI benefits”.

The answer we get from spy is cut and paste ND policy. Perfect contast.

back to the topic about how to help an 18 year old…which of course won’t involve cut and paste from the QDR.

@momof2angells, May the Lord protect and guide your son and help you to find peace.
