I teach school; today is my last day of summer. I watch my 3-yo during the days this time of year. Yesterday, he asked me to “please not pick him up from [his mother’s house] any more”. I know he doesn’t like my place : 1-room apartment, sparsely decorated as opposed to the house his mother lives in that she can afford to decorate with kid stuff. I try to do things with him and take him to the places I can afford, but all summer he kept asking to go back to his mother’s house as soon as I picked him up in the mornings. I’m going to try to make him as happy as I can today, but I think our relationship needs more help that I can do. I’m appealing to God to help me be a good enough dad to make him happy with me and asking for prayers to that end. This is the final day of my current St. Joseph novena. I’m really hoping for some blessing.

How about finding a thrift/secondhand store near you and buying a few kid friendly things for him? Set aside one corner of your apartment that is ‘his’, and put his new (to him) toys and games there.

Board games (appropriate for the age)
Coloring books, art supplies, crayons, washable markers
Books
Trucks
Stuffed animals and other toys he’d like.
Maybe hang a cute picture or poster in his space.

See if he’d like to go with you to choose some things, once you’ve found a good
resale shop.Then, he might feel like your home is his, too.

Try to remember and keep in mind the mother child relationship is very strong. I’ve watched six kids grow up and their mother will always be their champion, and I hate to say it, favorite, it is what it is.

I see the same thing going on with my grandkids, their mothers are the most important person in their lives too, and like my kids, always will be.

I think it’s kind of cool and never get upset about it… I like it, it causes me to appreciate the marvelous and sacred bond that God has made between a mother and her children.

Can you get back together with the mother? So many times over foolish pride and piddly things that can be corrected by talking to a Catholic Councillor are the reason couples split up.

I’ve been married to my boss since 1974, not making mountains out of mole hills and not needing to be right I think has a lot to do with it. 🙂

Your fine, just give your child your best love. Remember too he will appreciate and love you more for caring about his mother and treating her with respect than all the toys and ice cream in the world. Good luck, you are now officially a member of the lonely fathers hearts club. It’s OK.
 
The thing is, sometimes these things carry over into adulthood. My daughter keeps harping on the subject that “we were poor when she was a child. We did not have anything, etc.”

This will be in my prayers today. Don’t take his childlike desires too personally, just do what’s best for him at this moment. Continue to focus on being a good and holy man, and he will see your example and grow in respect and love for you when he becomes a man one day, and may he one day follow your example. There are many, many years ahead.
 
Prayer to Pope St. Sixtus II

Dear Pope St. Sixtus II, not much is known of your early life but as pope, you were responsible for the harmony between the eastern and western churches. In your short tenure of the papacy, you were an amazing example of peace, loyalty, and courage. You were martyred for your faith, and thus were the foundation that our modern Church was built on. Please pray for us who are still in this exile, the we may always keep forefront in our minds our ultimate destination and our ultimate Love. I also ask you to keep in your heart always the intentions I place before you today- for Jerome and his son’s relationship…Please bring these petitions to the throne of God and humbly present them to Him on our behalf. Thank you, St. Sixtus. Amen.
