I haven’t read all the replies, but is there ny way you could send him to a Truimph of Truth conference or Catholic Speakers conference. It’s possible once he sees other men on fire for the faith and encourage ‘men of faith’ to lead the family, then your husband might have a change of heart.

Now, at first it may seem like an impossibility to get your husband to go, but if your serious about it then you probably could.

Sit him down, let him know how this is tearing you up inside and don’t let him get defensive. Say that it’s not about how he feels justified, but what he can do for YOU in this marriage. Ask him if he’s willing to do this for YOU and this marriage. Ask him if he can make this effort based on how you feel and how important you think it is.

Then, go ahead and buy the ticket. Give it to him and say, “Please, no matter what you think about this, you know you can do this for me.”

Cradle-Catholics tend not to listen to those they know about the Catholic faith because they feel like they already know what there is to know. But it’s a little easier to let their guard down around others who have something to say about the faith.

As for the homily, well, one priest is a movie ruiner, so I tend to tune him out, which I know is technically wrong, BUT HE RUINS MOVIES. and not old ones, but ones that are released the day before. If he doesn’t have a funeral, he goes to movies all day on friday and sees them all. The spills the dirt on each of them in his homily.
This just slayed me! A movie ruiner? LOL There must be a hundred etiquette books out there on this subject warning people not to ruin movies for other’s and yet your priest ruins them for an entire congregation?? Well maybe he assumes you all saw it too! I can applaud his effort to intermix pop culture in his homily. Someone should gently tell him how un-cool it is to ruin movies for other’s though…I am just sitting here laughing though.

Someone on CAF, I can’t remember “who” talked about the “Judas Shuffle” to get out of church immediately following the eucharist - now when I see people do it I kind of giggle. I even told DH, “look at all the people doing the Judas Shuffle!” He laughed. Maybe if you lighten it up with DH and make jokes after the seriousness of the Eucharist he’ll enjoy mass with you all the more? I am in such a good mood on Sundays I am infectious…

And I have to admit the last thing to get me giggling in Mass really was quite funny. Our choir sits in a balcony over-looking the church. There are typically two people, a man and a woman, who stay down at a podium in front to direct parishoners in singing and to cue the choir. We went to a different mass than usual and the lady at the podium didn’t know what ever song was being sung apparently. So she was mouthing the words completely off-time to the song. At first I just kind of looked at her like “what is she doing?” Then I realized she was trying to keep up appearances and sing along. She kept looking at the music in her hand then up at the choir, mind you she could NOT have been singing since her mouth was moving completely off time to the words everyone else was singing - and she was right in front of a microphone. Then it hit me: this lady reminds me of a kung-fu movie dubbed in English! “Ahhhh Grasshopper…you learn well…”

that was it, I was gone…I couldn’t stop laughing. I wasn’t laughing at her, I was laughing WITH her, and I hope she did laugh at her own loss of words to sing with.

While preparation of mass is serious – as is the solemnity before receiving the Eucharist, sometimes a little laughter makes the whole day enjoyable. I think Jesus wants us to be appropriately reverent and at the same time to enjoy the CELEBRATION. There is laughter and good times in celebration. I know it’s hard to find the funny when you are mad…but again, humor is infectious. A little humor could get your DH to appreciate the day with his family. 👍 Especially if you accuse him of the Judas Shuffle! In good humor of course.

I’ve endured many long, “bad” masses for the sake of attending with my wife and two young children. I cannot keep my irritation hidden from my kids. I try to make up for it by instructing them as to what is appropriate for mass, and what it not.

I used to find consolation in the Eucharistic prayer, but our current pastor paraphrases every sentence in the sacramentary, mangling the language and changing the meaning of the original text with ill-advised improvisation.

This, after giving 20-minute, unprepared, ad-libbed homilies telling us to be nice people by getting in touch with our feelings.

And don’t get me started about the music! About as contemporary as disco. Why can’t my kids and I pray after Communion, instead of more disco followed by applause?

Did anyone say, “Tridentine Mass?” I can hardly wait.

See the thing with this guy though (other than the fact that he’s mean, crumudgeonly rude guy who no one likes) Is it isn’t like he’s saying heres the morality in Star Wars. Luke Skywalker is a Christ Figure. blah blah blah, He runs down the entire plot of the movie and then tells you why it’s bad for you to see anything related to pop culture. You shouldn’t go see Happy Feet because PENGUINS ARE EVIL. They wear tuxedos to non formal occasions creating a culture of vast comsumer comsumption, when you should be wearing hair shirts and ash, or some other similar nonsense. I sometimes have to repress the urge to get up and scream “IT"S JUST A MOVIE ABOUT A DANCING PENGUIN SO PLEASE SHUT UP!!!”
This is also the man who removed all of the light bulbs in the stair cases to the choir loft seating on Christmas Eve because someone left a light on overnight. He ranted to my dad (who’s an usher) that it cost money to leave the light on over night. My dad got out his wallet and said here’s 2 bucks give me back the light bulbs. He refused. My dad simply responded that he would have no business in helping the elderly, small children, women in high heels, pregnant women going up a twisty wooden stair case with no lights on Christmas Eve and he will rally the other ushers to join him and Father can go find 20 other saps to seat 1800 people for the Christmas Eve mass. My dad promptly got the lightbulbs back.
This priest is a jerk. He married one of my friends last spring, and his whole homily was the most depressing thing I have ever heard, I kept shooting looks at my friend the bride, like WHAT is he doing? The whole homily of the mass is that people who get divorced are horrible never do wells who kick puppeis and punch babies and should die. Needless to say, I requested the other priest and told my mother if he wasn’t available to do weddings, I would elope, I’m not having that at my wedding.

Also he is obsesed with lepers. Every Thanksgiving his homily is about lepers. It’s hard to look at food after listening to a guy talk for forty minutes about the afflicteds ears falling off into their dinner. I dare you to look at stuffing or creamed pearl onions after that.

Oh goodnight.

God Bless you for continuing to go to the same church.

I just snorted laughing about it all (back to my sense of humor) - the light bulbs? OK toxic family, toxic family, it MUST go back to toxic family. Look here I was worried about returning a party favor and your priest is removing light bulbs on Christmas Eve to save money…
🤷

The only problem with our church is that it’s full of humans. 🤷 Oh and that is ME included, (in case that sounds snobby) I am FAR from perfect.

Amen.
