N.Y. boy allowed by court to wear rosary beads to school for now

I was always taught by the nuns that a rosary should never be worn like jewelry. I don’t buy it for a minute that this boy could not have felt just as protected by carrying the rosary in his pocket or wearing it under his clothing. It also comes across to me as self-righteous attention getting and nothing more than someone grasping for 15 min of fame.

The fact that gansters are wearing them is reason enough for me to want to see any wearing of a rosary outside the clothing banned in schools.
 
This entire story is a good example how the public schools in America do not want real “diversity”.

The public schools do not want to take into account that other people live differently and believe differently, so we have a school administrator who wants to strip an individual of his cultural and religious identity.

Public schools are definitely not a place of “tolerance”; it is a shame this family had to spend the time and money to get a court order so their son’s Constitutional rights are not violated by the School District,
 
I am happy to hear the outcome of this case. The poor boy wears his rosary beads in honor of his brother who was fatally killed when a car struck him. The article states the brother that died was clutching his rosary beads. I can only imagine how this impression has stayed in the heart/mind of this child to see his brother like that.

He doesn’t wear them for show but to honor his brother and he feels protected. Good for the judge in respecting these points and freedom of religion when making his decision.

It is my understanding the wearing a rosary is common in some cultures, specificially among Latino’s I believe. It is also my understanding that many gang members wear crucifixes also. Are we going to ban those in school too?

It really doesn’t matter WHY he was wearing it. He has a Constitutional right to wear it. Period. Once we head down that slippery slope, there will be no turning back.
 
I just hate to see the rosary being turned into a political object. I don’t see the wearing of it as appropriate or necessary to proper devotion and to make this kind of legal battle over wearing it in school seems wrong to me.

The thing is that if the court was to rule in favor of the school, that would create legal precedent in the future for schools/institutions to start limiting in what ways people can express their faith. It may start with a rosary, but believe me, it won’t end there. Before we know it, we will not be able to openly express our faith outside of our home.

What this school did is absolutely a violation of our Constitution. It doesn’t matter if most Catholics disagree with the kid wearing a rosary around his neck or that that isn’t the proper way to wear it or not. All that matters is that HE was wearing it for his OWN religious reasons and he has every right to do that. This was well worth the legal battle because the consequences of sitting back and doing nothing will hurt all of us in the future.

  1. The court decision could have gone the other way.
  2. It has created a legal decision that is undoubtedly going to be challenged and may end up being overturned.
I still maintain that the boy’s rights to express his devotion to the rosary were never at risk of being infringed (unless the real devotion was to proselytizing at school?) and did not warrant opening up this religious and political (I personally would add frivolous) can of worms in our secular and currently Catholic bashing society. Better to save the legal battles for real cases of religious infringement.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the case - the above issue needs addressing with the young man.

It smacks of nothing more than superstition, and if that’s the case, the Rosary is being worn as some kind of ‘’ lucky charm’’.

And that is very wrong.

I often wear my rosary around my neck. That being said, it is ALWAYS inside my clothing. My faith and prayer life are not a thing to be paraded around like a show dog. Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

I see no reason with them enforcing this rule, so long as it is enforced school-wide for all faiths.

It was already stated in the original article that this particular school did not have a gang problem. Also gangs have been known to pick certain colors as their colors. Should certain colors be banned because some gangs in another area likes that color?

I could understand why he would prefer to wear it instead of carrying it in his pocket. If he is like my kids he would be much more likely to lose it in his pocket than he would if it was around his neck.

I’m glad to see the courts rule in the boy’s favor. 👍
