Because we’re human? Just answering your question… you might not find it funny, but I found the story funny. I know I might be in the minority here, but I did find it funny. I don’t proclaim to know the intent behind the streaker or what motivated him to do something like that or even what might have been a catalyst… chemically or behaviorally. But for me, I thought the story was funny and since I wasn’t there, I can laugh at it. I don’t proclaim to personally know what Christ would have thought, but I do know we aren’t supposed to be so tight that we can’t find the silliness in issues. (Yes, I’m well aware this streaker is 18). How many of you did something so ridiculously stupid, potentially dangerous and/or illegal when you were that age and you can laugh about it now? Not that you’d advocate it now, but you can laugh at it.

ok, off my soapbox… 😛
Actually, I look at the stupid things I did in my past and say
  1. Thank God I’m still alive
  2. Thank God I didn’t do something stupid enough to adversely alter the rest of my physical life
  3. Thank God I still have time to let Christ heal my soul
Many don’t have such opportunities that I have been granted by the grace of God. I don’t look back at them and laugh.

Further, as impure as I was, I never would have remotely considered doing something as vile as this act This person needs serious punishment and reprimanding to understand the serious nature and ramifications of what has been done. The incredible offense to the altar in combination to the offense of modesty of the congregation(most especially children) is beyond outrageous. He does not need patronizing laughter.

 I’m not saying we cannot find silliness in “issues” but there are some issues which I don’t believe are ‘‘silly’’. I suppose if this guy thought it was funny to run up to the front of the Church and draw a smiley face on the face of Jesus on the crucifix it would be funny too? “Because we are human” is a cop out for many of our sins.

It is a matter of opinion, I am not going to judge you and say you are sinning by your choice to laugh at it, I simply disagree. I can imagine if he had done this in a mosque, the Muslims would’ve ran him out of there. I think they would be right in doing so and have the proper perspective of what is sacred.

God Bless.

He might be dead if he did this in a mosque.

I cannot imagine what I would do if I was in Mass with my daughters and this happened. Some things you don’t plan for but there are 2 precious things that must be protected in this world - one is the altar and the other is children. Only in a relativistic and sex-saturated society would anyone think this is not gravely offensive and not taking a monumental risk.

I myself am guilty of doing many irresponsible things in my time, usually as bets and dares, but what he did just makes me sick.

The more I think about it, the more angry I get. I keep thinking what I would do to the guy if I was there. He not only disrespected Christ, he disrespected every family and child in the church.

I believe Christ would pity him and try to make him understand the error in his ways. After he got him covered up, of course.

Because we are human is a statement of fact and it’s something we can’t erase. I don’t use it as an excuse, but it does actually apply a simple reason of WHY people do stupid things. (which is not the same as condoning sin or trying to erase guilt for them) I originally posted that I thought it was funny and I probably would have asked the priest to bless the guy on his way out as a way of me being a smart aleck and trying to lighten up an obviously gasping moment. I don’t advocate that this guy showed normal behavior, I never said it wasn’t sacreligious, and I don’t believe it to be slap-knee so hilarious that I WOULDN’T have done something to stop it.

I apologize that I have a sense of humor that can laugh at the stupidity of some people while retaining a sense of what is right. Do I find dancing provokatively, naked on the alter wrong? Yes- very. Do I find myself so pious and morally righteous that I can declare myself morally superior to this obviously fallen man? No.

If I was Muslim, yes, I would have run him out of the mosque. But I’m not a Muslim and I would still run him out of our Church. Had I been there, I probably would have been appalled and decked the guy. But I wasn’t… so I’m armchair quarterbacking and I got a chuckle out of something stupid. And you’re right… it is all a matter of opinion, so thank you for not judging me. I appreciate it.

As for dancing naked and provocatively in front of Christ… oh come on… you don’t have a crucifix in your bedroom and you’ve never boogied around after a shower? yes, this guy was in a Mass and I seriously don’t agree with that. But Christ has seen every last one of us do something we’d outwardly say is wrong or socially unacceptable, but inwardly, we know we’re guilty of doing. So before everyone starts throwing stones at this guy… say a prayer for him that he gets the help he needs to not pull a stunt like this again.

He had to be drunk. I find myself almost hoping so, for his culpability would be mitigated and it would be easier to forgive: jumping naked onto the Altar of Sacrifice. We should make acts of reparation to Our Lord in the Blessed Sarcament for this stupidity.
I was tempted to laugh-as the Roman soldiers did at our Lords Passion. How simple minded are we getting that we can not see a sin for a sin. Dancing around nude is not the sin, it is the disrespect that is. Just as our laughing at the disrespect is. Put a whip in our hands so we can lash out-put words and laughing in our mouths so we can use them as a whip. This is the Alter of the Lord.

Yes I have a piece of wood and plaster fashioned into the crucified Christ in my bedroom. I DON’T have the actual body and blood of Christ in the tabernacle though.

Some rebuking would be in order.

I’m having trouble pulling the symathy card here. I can only imagine how to explain this to the 6 and 7 year olds. Child molestors are poor souls as well.

My dad’s family was really large and when he was little they attended mass seperately. He was a toddler and one day (I believe during mass) He ran from taking a bath at home down the street completely naked during the mass service my grandma was sitting at. Grandma pretended she didn’t know him.

I think humor was his intent, not to mention Satan’s. 5 is old enough to know better. He was 18. I’d like to see him try this in a Mosque. I don’t think too many would be laughing. This type of behavior is as innocent as what happens on some spring breaks. A lot think it’s innocent fun but they are sadly mistaken.
Amen. How utterly blasphemous to God.

That is incredibly sickening and I would have been outraged! The best thing to do is pray for him though.

I think this is funny.

What makes me angry are the horrible things that the liturgists have done in church.

Well, I am 19, and this is inexcusable. I can’t believe anyone who calls themself a Catholic would find it funny.

👋

I think that someone should visit this young man when he is in jail and give him the address for the church below.😃

**Group develops an identity outside Catholic Church

MAYNARD – It’s like clockwork, meeting every other Sunday at noon in a rented room of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Normally it is an intimate setting of 25 or so parishioners, all gathering for the same reason.
They are all members of the American Catholic Church, most of whose members have disassociated themselves from the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Although it is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, the American Catholic Church of New England bases its beliefs on most of the teachings of the Roman Catholic faith.
"Our church basically holds the same faith tenets of the Roman Catholic Church, but our practice is more liberal in that
we have married, celibate and women clergy,
we openly welcome the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered, and the divorced and married communities, all are welcome" said Bishop Stephen Burke.
Members often refer to the teachings of the American Catholic Church as the “progressive alternative” to the teachings of the Roman Catholic faith tradition.
Burke was ordained about 55 years ago and served as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church for most of his vocation. However, as years passed, **he felt it more difficult to enforce some of the beliefs of Roman Catholic teachings. **
He then made what he described as “the change of a lifetime” and disconnected himself from the Roman Catholic Church, choosing to become a member of the American Catholic Church of New England.
Through the American Catholic Church, **women are also allowed to be ordained as priests and bishops, unlike the Roman Catholic Church that limits this vocation to men. **
Burke said that unlike the Roman Catholic Church that has an “ideal of Christian life,” the **American Catholic Church accepts everyone regardless of their mistakes. **
“Not all of us reach that ideal,” said Burke. “We don’t always measure up to that ideal.”
Instead, Burke said parishioners of the American Catholic Church base their worship around believing there is “a loving, accepting, caring God.” Burke said parishioners of the American Catholic Church do not view God as punishing.
Burke said, **“Whoever wants to join is more than welcome to come.” **He added that the church accepts anyone.

Maybe what people are finding funny is not so much what he did, but how he ended up—having to leave the Church in handcuffs, in his birthday suit. Or, his brazen stupidity. Ya know, like how could anyone be so stupid as to do that?!

Some things are just so horrible that the only thing you can do is laugh. But i do agree its unexcusable and this boy needs help.
