Pretty much what the subject says … five movies you wish you hadn’t wasted your time on.
  1. Revenge of the Nerds … I used to love this movie, because I considered myself a nerd (still do, in many ways). I eventually came to realize that the “nerds” in this movie are just as morally depraved as the “jocks” that are supposedly persecuting them.
  2. 9 1/2 Weeks … had a copy of this on VHS basically because I was a big Kim Basinger fan. Eventually got a conscience about it and recorded over it.
  3. Event Horizon … saw a preview of this movie when I was staying in the D.C. area on business. Thought it looked interesting, similar to Alien which I am a big fan of. Turns out it’s actually a bit more horrific than Alien. Seriously.
  4. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. The nadir of the Superman film series. (I actually still have this on DVD as part of the Superman Ultimate Collector’s Edition box set. Only watched that copy once, and that with the commentary on, talking about everything that went wrong with this movie!)
  5. The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle. Completely unfunny live-action/CGI animation hybrid film adaptation, from 2000.

The only movie I ever really regretted seeing was A Clockwork Orange - I’ve got a pretty strong stomach but that was over the line.

  1. Phantom Thread - I almost never go to movies in the theater, but I decided to treat myself and this one looked good as I’ve always liked 20th century retro and Daniel Day-Lewis, so I went. Unfortunately the plot got weirder and weirder and the ending was just stupid. I haven’t been to a movie theater since.
  2. Rambling Rose - Made the mistake of taking my mother to see this. I thought it would be nice to see a movie set in the era when she grew up. Didn’t know it had a very explicit and frankly, gross pedophilia scene in it. Oops.
  3. Hoop Dreams - It seemed to just go on forever (it’s like 3 hours long) and was ultimately rather depressing.
  4. Erik the Viking - My husband was a big Monty Python fan so I went to see this with him, I think we had free movie tickets to use up or something. I usually find Monty Python to be reasonably funny, but I literally fell asleep in this movie within 15 minutes.
  5. Kes - I think I’ve posted before about my extreme dislike of this movie which has the thickest and least understandable English accents ever put on film and a miserable soul-crushing ending.

It’s Pat the Movie - Feel asleep watching the movie and woke up to Pat’s annoying laugh. Got stuck in my head for years. lol

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker - For me the worst film in the series and still upset I paid to see it. Even my son thought it was awful and asked if we had to stay for the whole thing.

Halloween II (Rob Zombie’s Version) - The only good part was the opening scene. His take on the franchise was awful. None of the characters were likable.

It Follows - Being a horror movie fan, I had high hopes for this one. Went to see it with my extended family. Had to convince them not to walk out because I thought it would get better. It never did.

Werewolf (1995) - My wife and I rented this movie on New Years Eve. Thought we’d hit up Blockbuster and spend the evening watching a horror movie and eating junk food. This movie nearly ruined the entire year for me. lol

This one’s hard to answer because I think I literally push them out of my memories when I don’t like them. Haha.

Basically movies that contain unexpectedly horrific gore, or have bad endings, would fall on whatever list I’m forgetting.

I will say I regret watching Game of Thrones, though it’s TV not movie. A couple of the more horrific violent scenes have continued to haunt my imagination, and I wish I’d never seen them. (It’s not a series I’d have started watching myself, but watched in the company of someone else who promised me it’d get better. It didn’t.)

  1. FeardotCom- the only thing I remember about this film is that it was headache inducing, one of the rare instances that I have walked out of the theater.
  2. Battlefield Earth- complete utter garbage. I’m a big sci-fi fan and thought it might be ok, boy was I wrong.
  3. Alone in the Dark- based on a horror video game, also headache inducing and yet I made it all the way through this one.
  4. I Know Who Killed Me- just awful, don’t believe me then wiki the plot, it’s mind numbing.
  5. Eyes Wide Shut- just trash.
Bonus: Superman IV- I loved Christopher Reeves as Superman but this film is just awful
Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker - For me the worst film in the series and still upset I paid to see it. Even my son thought it was awful and asked if we had to stay for the whole thing.
As bad as this was, I thought The Last Jedi was worse.
Halloween II (Rob Zombie’s Version) - The only good part was the opening scene. His take on the franchise was awful. None of the characters were likable.
I liked Rob Zombies Halloween(s) (too much gore, but as a horror junkie I can overlook that) and I know I’m in the minority here but I really liked the direction he went with this one and after seeing it in the theater I looked forward to a follow up that never materialized.
It Follows - Being a horror movie fan, I had high hopes for this one. Went to see it with my extended family. Had to convince them not to walk out because I thought it would get better. It never did.
I streamed this one at somebody’s (I forget who) recommendation, it was meh.

One film is enough for now: The Natural, starring Robert Redford. The original story, by Bernard Malamud, is a classic tragedy. The protagonist gives in to corruption and loses everything – the baseball game, his reputation, the love of his life. The evening paper tells all, the paper boy begs him, “Say it ain’t true, Roy,” and Roy weeps bitter tears. The End.

But no. The movie people made Roy the principled hero who rejects the mob, wins the game, marries the girl, and they lived happily ever after.

Might as well write a happy ending to Romeo and Juliet.

🍺 😠🚬

I’m the opposite. I saw the movie of “The Natural” and thought it was wonderful.
At some point after that, I discovered that Malamud’s novel ends horribly, which made me annoyed.
Never read another Malamud work.

I simply didn’t see the point of telling that whole story only to have it end unhappily. I always felt that many of the so-called great 20th century authors enjoyed wallowing in misery.

Oh, well. Maybe it’s all a matter of first impressions. I read the book first, you saw the movie first, and so neither of us can stand the other work.

I read it in high school for a literature course on anti-heroes. Other readings that I can recall are The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, A&P, The Geranium, … I imagine you would have hated that course! 😁

Some films are so bad that they are actually “good” and become cult classics, such as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

But Raiders from Beneath the Sea must stand out as one of the all-time worst films ever made. The plot, acting, and filming (somewhat resembles a black-and-white home movie) are atrocious. I saw it in the theater in the 1960’s and still remember it because it was just so terrible.

Saw that one when it first came out and liked it, as well as virtually all of Stanley Kubrick’s films. What does that say about me?

I draw the line with the Saw movies.

Yeah, don’t get me started on Updike… 🤣

Regarding Walter Mitty, I did read that story at some point. But his Saturday morning cartoon cat persona was more to my liking.

  1. From Dusk Till Dawn. Advertised as a vampire movie. Was actually about two horrible people, one of them actually psychotic, doing horrible things. I was told the vampires showed up after I walked out of the theatre. I don’t care.
  1. Waterworld. This one was actually interesting, right up until the “Hero” stated his intention to murder a teen girl in her mother’s sight, because they didn’t have enough drinking water to last them till their destination.
  1. Rocky Horror Picture Show. My best friend loved it for the symbolism. I alternated between boredom and disgust.
  2. Inglourious Basterds. Inglorious indeed. A film that glorified Nazi-hunters for behaving as least as badly as the Nazis.
  3. Twilight. At least this wasn’t horrible. Just dead boring.

6 for the price of 5 😉

Vertigo
Doctor Zhivago
Close Encounters of Third Kind
The Matrix Trilogy
Fargo
The Graduate

For changed-from-the-book endings, I regret watching The Plague Dogs – What a switcheroo!

I don’t really regret watching Hannibal, the ending is well done. But the different ending of the book is so much better.

Avatar

The Irishman (the movie on Netflix with Robert DeNiro)

A Star Is Born (Lady Gaga)

Parasite

The Hills Have Eyes

The Blair Witch Project. Went because my sister had free tickets. Still felt like asking for a refund 🙂

Most of the second and third Star Wars trilogies. So disappointed that I havent had the heart to watch the very last one.

Although oddly enough I liked Rogue One

All of those awful slasher movies I saw as a teenager and young adult in the 1980s. Movies like

Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Zombi 2 (a gross 1979 Italian film)
Child’s Play

There are others, since we were into those kind of movies then. Looking back, I see them as violence porn. I prefer movies that are more uplifting now.

Star Wars - the longest most painful two hours of my life.

American Sniper - walked out after 20 minutes.

Tron - second worst two hours of my life.

Inception - I woke up when it ended

Scary Movie - I think we walked out after ten minutes
