Aren’t Bishops forbidden to marry in the Catholic Church?

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Catholics4Life:
… it is not in agreement with the official teachings of the Church as a whole.
Does this mean then that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops teaches one thing, while the Vatican teaches something else?

Catholics4Life:
Here is something I found …
At the link you provided and there was an article by a layman, Karl Keating, who dissents from a statement by Walter Cardinal Kasper, president of the Pontifical Commission for the Religious Relations with the Jews… Should an American Catholic go along with this dissenting Catholic layman, and dissent from statements made by the Pontifical Commission for the Religious Relations with the Jews, and dissent from a 12-page statement released August 12 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and dissent from a statement issued by Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews? Or should an American Catholic give his or her assent to the U.S. Catholic Bishops, to the Pontifical Commission for the Religious Relations with the Jews, and to the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews?

Catholics4Life:
…do you know who Karl Keating is?
Is he not dissenting from the US Bishops and a Pontifical Commission setup by the Pope?

The idea that priestly celibacy is unscriptural is itself unscriptural and you’ll see from the discussion.

…Delegations of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and of the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews met for the fourth time from 17-19 October [2004] in Grottaferrata, Italy and declared: "3. The bilateral Committee reiterated its commitment to the principal declarations of the previous meetings, which included a call for mutual respect of our different religious identities, and affirmed a common rejection of any attempts to persuade people to reject their own heritage… .” (L’Osservatore* Romano*, Nov. 17, 2004, p. 8.)…
Glory be Jesus Christ!
not sure where the l’osservatore romano quote comes from. here’s the committee’s press release found on the vatican website:
Statement to the press from the meeting of the bilateral committee
of the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews
and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel

From our meeting in Grottaferrata (Rome), October 17-19, 2004, we issue this declaration.

Conscious of the fact that there is not wide enough awareness in our respective communities of the momentous change that has taken place in the relationship between Catholics and Jews; and in light of our own committee’s work and our current discussions on a shared vision for a just and ethical society; we declare:
  1. We are not enemies, but unequivocal partners in articulating the essential moral values for the survival and welfare of human society.
  2. Jerusalem has a sacred character for all the children of Abraham. We call on all relevant authorities to respect this character and to prevent actions which offend the sensibilities of religious communities that reside in Jerusalem and hold her dear.
  3. We call on religious authorities to protest publicly when actions of disrespect towards religious persons, symbols and Holy Sites are committed, such as the desecration of cemeteries and the recent assault on the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem. We call on them to educate their communities to behave with respect and dignity towards people and towards their attachment to their faith.
stanley123, perhaps you can provide a link to where you found your quote.
also, as has been previously noted, this is an inter-religious committee. for more substantive ‘church teaching’ please see:
  1. Cathechism of the Catholic Church, 1257,
  2. Vatican II’s Ad Gentes, and
  3. Paul VI’s *Evangelii Nuntiandi, *14
i’m sure you’ll find the ‘teaching’ of the church to be quite in line with Scripture. (much thanks to marty barrack’s article which appeared in Hebrew Catholic # 77, hebrewcatholic.org/TheHebrewCatholic/thc77fall2002.html)
    thanks for listening, t

Still, according to the link given,
catholic.com/thisrock/2002/0210fr.asp
he expresses his disagreement with official documents of the Church as given by
  1. Pontifical Commission for the Religious Relations with the Jews,
  2. the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Generally, then is it OK for a Catholic layman to dissent from official Church documents, such as these? This would seem to be a bit odd, that Catholics should place their trust in a layman and dissent from both what the US Bishops and an official Pontifical commission in the Vatican are telling them?

Could you summarize the discussion in a short paragraph because i think it is proving it to be unbiblical

UBERROGO:
Could you summarize the discussion in a short paragraph because i think it is proving it to be unbiblical
I think the entire case is summed up within the first seven posts.
From post 2:
How do you figure unBiblical?
Matthew 19:10-12
"10 His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry.11 Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it. "

Ist Corinthians 7:6-9
“6 But I speak this by indulgence, not by commandment. 7 For I would that all men were even as myself: but every one hath his proper gift from God; one after this manner, and another after that. 8 But I say to the unmarried, and to the widows: It is good for them if they so continue, even as I. 9 But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be burnt.”

Posts 5 & 6 deal with his proof texts & arguments.
From Post 7:

My only point gentlemen, is that it is not (as alleged) “unBiblical” as I hope is apparent from my posts.

My only point HERE is that there is no conflict with this teaching and the Word of God, as is plainly shown. Though there is much discussion & debate on that thread I think that case is made quite well that the disciplne is quite thoroughly approved by Christ Himself and that it was practiced by St. Paul. It’s not doctrinal, but disciplinary, though I have no problems whatsoever with the Priesthood as it is.

Catholics reject efforts to convert Jews - Brief Article
and the Catholics4Life gave the link to an article by Mr. Keating:

It still looks to me like we have a contradiction to Matthew 28, 19. I guess that the only defense is that Catholics don’t have to pay attention to what the US Bishops say or to what a Pontifical Commission says?
Stanley, your link is to a non-Catholic website. Go to catholic.com (this website) and do a search for Jewish relations. Read up some more on the subject.

actually, i was hoping you could provide a link to the l’osservatore romano quote you referenced.
and again, delegates to a task force really do not constitute, and should not be considered, magisterial teachers. please review the documents of the magisterium for actual church teachings. you can find them at www.vatican.va.

Although I know this has been discussed at length before, there are several new people who have said this recently. I think it is time to start a new thread again. Shall we make a list here that you wish to discuss and then start a new thread for each doctrine that a person believes is unscriptural?

Name one doctrine of the Catholic Church that contradicts Scripture. One that in fact does not have an implicit teaching in Scripture.

I am a Catholic that loves to “find it in the Bible”. If anyone can show me one doctrine of the Catholic Church that contradicts scripture, I’ll leave today.

Maria

Hi Maria
Here is another another teaching that comes from the church, as a mater of fact it come right out of the CCC.
841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.

Now if you go to the scriptures,
Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If Jesus says that HE is the only way to heaven, then how can a Muslim who doesn’t believe Christ is who he says he is be also included in salvation?
Thanks.

Unfortunately this is easily misinterpreted by those who want something to misconstrue against the Catholic Church. What this is saying (as well as His Holiness’s statements about our respect for the Jews, and this also applies to all non-Catholic Christians to some degree) is that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church, but we do not know how God will choose to deal with them all in order to bring them all to the fullness of faith.

In spite of the passage stated by jsussvsus, there are other passages that leave the path of salvation open to those who do not know Christ yet…

**John 10:14 I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me. 15 As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep.16 And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd. **

Most people think this is just about the gentiles, but there is nothing in the context that so limits it, is there now? There is also the example of the Holy Spirit dealing with Cornelius and his family…

Those who hear the truth and reject it will have to deal with that at judgement.
Pax vobiscum,.

Hi
I have a saying, ''you can take a pile of dog doo doo and if you put enough frosting on it, it will look like a cake. But all you still have is a pile of dog doo doo.
841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.

Notice the second line, Those who acknowlege the creator, these profess to hold the faith of Abraham. Muslims do not follow the new testament and they reject Christ as the son of God or our savior. John 10:14 is clearly talking about those who havn’t had the chance to here about Christ, not those who have heard and choose to reject Christ. Jesus is our salvation, plain and simple. To believe otherwise is to reject him. You even say that there is salvation for those who don’t know Christ, the difference is that Muslims have heard about Christ. Look at this parable in Luke,
Jesus is saying that they have been told and yet they still reject. So do the Muslims reject Christ.

Luk 16:27 "The rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house-
Luk 16:28 for I have five brothers-to warn them, so that they won’t end up in this place of torture, too.’
Luk 16:29 Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. They should listen to them!’
Luk 16:30 But the rich man replied, ‘No, father Abraham! Yet if someone from the dead went to them, they would repent.’
Luk 16:31 Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded, even if someone rises from the dead.’

Sorry about the dog doo doo illustration but I think it’s a good one.
Thanks.

jsussvsus ,
I completely disagree and I think you could’ve chosen a far better analogy and one that doesn’t insult us by implying that the CCC is dog droppings. You didn’t think about that did you?

You contend with a single passage out of context. One who claims to know all the ways of the Holy Spirit presumes too much. I figured you had pulled this out of context so I went back to check, since I’ve read it before & knew you had the meaning wrong based on the fact that you are seeking something to allege conflict with the Word of God, so here for the sake of all those who might be fooled (for a moment) is the passage in it’s context,

**The Church and non-Christians

839 "Those who have not yet received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways."325
The relationship of the Church with the Jewish People. When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People,326 "the first to hear the Word of God."327 The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God’s revelation in the Old Covenant. To the Jews “belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ”,328 "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."329

840 and when one considers the future, God’s People of the Old Covenant and the new People of God tend towards similar goals: expectation of the coming (or the return) of the Messiah. But one awaits the return of the Messiah who died and rose from the dead and is recognized as Lord and Son of God; the other awaits the coming of a Messiah, whose features remain hidden till the end of time; and the latter waiting is accompanied by the drama of not knowing or of misunderstanding Christ Jesus.

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day."330

842 The Church’s bond with non-Christian religions is in the first place the common origin and end of the human race:

All nations form but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city. . .331
