Name something weird you heard in a homily

That sounds just like my priest. Am I the only one who reads in between lines that President Bush is just like Stalin and Hitler?

I sure hope you are the only one who reads between the lines in this manner.

Unfortunately, I know many Americans would like to place all blame on President George W. Bush for leading us in our knee-jerk, ill-advised, reactionary response in targetting the Saddam Hussein’s government as the primary terrorist threat to our homeland security in the wake of the greatest unprovoked terrorist attack on American soil.

The fact of the matter is that the American people according to polls and implemented by the full body of representatives in Congress embarked on this course of action like a hornet whose nest had been attacked.

In the aftermath of this decision, we are left with the moral obligation for responsible transition, not cut & run, from the country whose government, such as it was, we destroyed.

Can one really put President George W. Bush in the same category as Stalin & Hitler without indicting our nation for its complicity? If so, should we as a nation take full responsibility for our sin? Should we as a nation make full restitution to the best of our ability as the proper thing to do?

Naah… Let’s cut & run.

I’m interested in how the Church fares in Europe not to relish on the sad facts haunts it, but rather as a possible window into America’s future.

Make no mistake, even though the circumstances are different, such as the absence of the Church-tax, secularism is perhaps as rampant in the East and West coast as in Berlin, with equal effects on church belonging and attendance.

And America is perhaps a window into the Third World’s future with regards to the Church. Again, due to different factors, but primarily through cultural hegemony, with perhaps even more deleterious effects than in America or Europe. Just consider that in the last 5 years or so we’ve seen abortion being decriminalized in about 1/3 of Latin America, after decades of steady decline in the Catholic population and Mass attendance.

I know and trust that the Lord is protecting the Church through our times, but I’m still fearful for the millions of people who die in an unrepentant state nowadays and likely even more in the near future.

O, Lord, we need you badly. Turn not your face from us.

I can’t blame you, Augustine; from now on I’ll go to my parish for my confirmation classes, I’ll send them a check each month, and attend a few social gatherings. For my spiritual needs I’ll attend a monks’ church I found yesterday, because I’m not saintly enough to not let my priest ruin the Mass for me. God bless you.

you never woiuld??? Why? It is better for us Catholics to know about the bad ones than to have some anti-Catholic bring it up and we don’t know waht to say because we never heard of it… that does NOT look good… and it isn’t good… We Catholics can still be proud of our Church history. The Church has more good history than bad, which is something all of us seem to forget - largely because the anti-Catholics are always throwing (distorted versions of) the Inquistiion, the Crusades and etc in our face… (conveniently forgetting about jim Jones, Jim Baker, that guy caught with a prostitute, etc… )…

even a pope who commits murder does not invalidate our faith. It just shows that one member of the faith didn’t live the faith. Big deal. happens all the time. Jesus said that the road to eternal life is narrow and there are few who find it… (st. Mt 7:13, 7:21, etc…)

I tried many times to put up with a priest who said… shall we say… “unedifying” things… things reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard… uch:

But somehow, i just couldn’t… after awhile, i had to find (re-find) 0totally orthodox…

but i think it is (as usual) Catholics’ fault that the world is going un-Catholic… We don’t seem to like to evangelize… generally speaking… and the Protestants (gen speaking) DO… and so, they take their bibles out into the world …and get Catholics out of the Church by quoting scripture, which a lot of Catholics don’t “know” or think they know… but even when we know scripture, we can sometimes get doubts about its meaning… and we can start thinking that what the Protestants are saying makes sense…

So anyway… we have to all be vigilent about spreading our faith… even if doing so makes us uncomfortable… and it usually does… but Jesus said that if we deny him (His church is included in that, i feel) before men, he will deny us before the Father…

We ordinary americans do not know all that Bush & his advisors (not to mention Congress) knows about Iraq.

And it also needs to be mentioned that Bush is (supposed to be) a pretty good Christian… He did right by the unborn during his presidency, which is more than i can say for some…

So i feel it is way out of line to compare him to Hitler and Stalin… He tried to stop the killing of the unborn…

which is more than i can say for most priests and ministers in this country. ***If every single one of them had preached from the pulpit about the evils of abortion and how they should vote for the most pro-life candidate [wouldn’t even have to mention names], we would not be in the mess we are in now… ***

I think honesty is always a good move…

I already know i annoy my priest… and i am quite proud of that… because he isn’t very outspoken on abortion anymore than… most priests elsewhere are…

I say bad pastoral move because it isolates the parishioners from their pastor… but true, honesty is the best policy! And we need more and more honesty and more of us need to ‘annoy’ our pastors with spiritual bouquets and offer our support to them… but I think he meant bad annoying… haha oh well.

I haven’t heard any truly strange things in a homily, but we did have a priest that would ask God for just one First Down or something similar when Notre Dame’s football season wasn’t going well.

More than 30 years ago, sitting in a fundamentalist, Pentecostal, Protestant church, I heard “The Wristwatch Sermon”. To this day, it sticks with me.

It was given by a visiting, elderly, evangelist (a sort of traveling preacher that local pastors brought in to stir up devotion in the flock). After a brief run up of music, he launched into a absolutely, flaming, ranting, jumping, kicking, two hour dissertation on how wristwatches were the tool of the devil and were responsible for the evils of the modern world.

It was fun to watch the pastor and most of the men in the church quietly slip their watches off and into their pockets.

Actually in today’s homily our pastor said most people thought of John the Baptist (whom he calls “John the Baptizer”–YUCK, I thought that aberration of the 80s and 90s had died off, but I guess it hasn’t) as being an unkempt unwashed slob in dirty skins, so poor he ate bugs. . . but then he (our pastor) said that as a child he wore a camel’s hair COAT which was very ‘stylish’ and so he always considered St. John --and I quote –
“To be a very ‘stylin’ vegan”.

Quite a few people laughed. Others like me are still trying to figure out if he was serious. . .
