The same for Portuguese people, we have dishes that include the blood, the heart, feet etc.
So do we in Sweden. Or at least we used to. The younger generations barely cook at all any more. Least of all our traditional dishes. Pigs feet in jelly is yumyum. Smoked reindeer’s heart is fantastic. And a lot of people here absolutely love cooked blood in various forms. We also have our own version of hash in which liver and heart has a prominent role.

@Michaelangelo We consider as specialty calf’s tongue and brain. I like none of it, better to say I am gonna throw up when I see it.
And cooked blood is one of the worst flavours to me.

I used to love raw potatoes when I was a child. My mum would cut me a piece when she was peeling them, and one for the dog who also loved them, so that made two of us.

Hi, how so? I have spent a fair amount of time in Sweden never experienced such dishes. I usually mention this Portuguese pig dishes, including a simple stew with chicken feet, and I get a very disgust reaction from the Swedes.

I don’t think we have had any dish, common at least, using brain. And I would politely decline if offered. No Indiana Jones scene for me thank you. But tongue sure was eaten a lot when I was young. I still love boiled calf tongue. 😋

Hi!
Sweden have experienced a huge shift on many levels. When it comes to food the younger generations are totally unaware of how to properly make use of an animal. It seems like pre-cut steaks is somehow all an animal can provide. The rest goes to produce animal feed and pet food. 😟

I am a vegetarian, but I am 1/8 Swedish, and my dad’s family was still very into that heritage. Swedish food consists of a lot of things made from blood and stuff like this.Lutefisk, I think I’d rather have blood.

I literally just said something about Swedish food before seeing this.

Lutfisk is usually only eaten during christmas and taste nothing, in my opinion. It is the sauce that goes with it that actually makes it taste somehing. But to many elderly it is a taste of childhood and comfort. I guess I’ll be there soon 😄

My dad would be well into his sixties, were he still alive. His family used to have Christmas parties, and there was ALWAYS Swedish food. Some good pastries, I will give the Swedes that one.

My very favorite treat, aside from chocolate ganache, is that thick “skin” that forms on top of chocolate pudding when exposed to air—love it, love it!!

I add dark chocolate to Jello’s Cooked Chocolate Pudding Mix, whisk only 1 2/3 c of liquid in a large, round, curved bottom casserole dish (extremely important; straight sides at bottom give poor results), no lid, nuke, whisk out lumps, nuke, whisk out lumps, then spread into a very large baking dish (9 x 13), so there’s more surface “skin” available. Love it! Love it! Especially when still warm! Heaven!

Sometimes I add nuts, and if I add alcohol, I subtract that amount of liquid. Using some cream, or even half ‘n’ half makes a much nicer, silky-smooth texture. Some store brands (not all) of mix have an unpleasant grainy texture. No walking away, must watch it and open door if it looks like it’s going to boil over. Yum, yum!

I looked tomato jelly up online. Sounds easy enough. I’d never heard of it before reading here. Might try it this summer. 😀 Do you use it like you’d use catsup? Or on toast, as with other jellies and jams?

Pease do post the tomato jelly recipe, @Xystus! There are regional differences and even different recipe preferences within the same family. I’ve been a recipe nut most of my life!

Well, at least somebody still gets fed – be it pets or other animals. Still, the leftovers don’t go to waste.

Yes. When I really think about it, no carcas ever goes to waste. The bacteria and other microscopic critters will always get fed. 😄
