I’ve got to nominate Brideshead Revisted 2008 as at least among the worst. To be honest, I couldn’t even watch it all. The 1981 mini-series is one of the all time greatest television productions. The 2008 movie remake was a crime. Take the time to watch the 1981 production—or read the book.

Dune is one of those movies everyone labeled as bad but I LOVED it from day one. It’s a LOVE IT or LOATHE IT kind of movie. No middle ground lol…I adored it when it came out in 84. I was a kid and I just watched it over and over on VHS lol…go figure…
I liked Dune until I could not stop seeing the correlations to the Savior Jesus in it and threw it out. Water of Life? Not from Kyle McLaughlin. Of course when one hits a golf ball into the sand trap, Shai Hulud must be said! … only if one is the Cuisinart Haberdasher!

I’ll go on a serious note on this one and, not to sound a prude:
Pulp Fiction. And, no it’s not because of the violence but the whole picture and attitude. Yes, the critics gulped it up, Oh wow, he’s playing with the timing of the plot, Oh wow, Tarantino is mixing low-brow with high-brow. Even some of my Catholic friends (more religious than I) loved it. I didn’t, and I am not one that understands movies as having to be morally edifying. I love relaxing, joking. But I really think Tarantino is overrated. He just likes putting funny, little, violent comic-book characters together in odd situations and mixing it all up. His acting on top of that is 10 times worse than his directing. Recently, some English newspaper sat down for an interview with him and questioned the man’s sanity in his newest movie, which I won’t bother to see, and I haven’t had the slightest inkling to waste 2 hours on Kill Bill (either, ahem, volume). In his new movie Inglorious Basterds, apparently there is a great and drawn out scene where somebody’s scalp is lacerated nicely with a knife with just enough gruesome detail to satisfy even the most extreme voyeur of violence and humiliation.

Another one that might get the cognoscenti furious with dumb me: I choose Madonna’s husband’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. I know there is some really great camera work with the cards and all and I did go with a friend who is in the movie industry who wanted to see it. But I told him truthfully, for the first time in a movie theater, I saw people laughing out load to really brutal violent scenes. It was the first time I encountered the Torture as Comedy routine. (Yes, it was done before in Hollywood but it was silly back then and of a different kind not degree; here movies appeared to be entering into the gratuitous upon further gratuitous upon further gratuitous violence inside a not-so-funny comic collage genre of movie). Yeah, I know people will say “Oh, you just don’t get it”.

But I am also aware of how “cool” it is for the critic or watcher to approve of this whole genre because it’s just so “revolutionary chique”
breaking barriers and hey, they say to themselves, I belong to these trend setters. After awhile, hearing a bunch of guys swear profusely for the whole movie to establish their street cred, you almost feel you’re watching a teen producer trying to show how cool he is with it all (i.e how many dirty little words can I come up with before mommy hits me). It becomes, for lack of a better term, incredibly childish and puerile. When there is no redeeming plot or character, it is the film equivalent of “shock art” and basically only reinforces the notion of the banality of the violence on the screen. I hate this trend in recent movies.

Just my 2 cents. And on that note, back to the fun

I hate movies where you can’t even see what’s going on! Usually, they’re fast action scenes in the dark.
You have to wonder why they bother to spend big bucks filming action sequences that NO ONE CAN SEE. 😛

Truth be told, I despised “Pearl Harbor” with Ben Affleck and whoever else was in that. It’s biggest problem was that it couldn’t decide if it was a war movie with a twist of romance, or a romance caught in the middle of a war. Those may sound similar, but it is all about the overall direction of the movie. And though I like Cuba Gooding Jr. as an actor, his character line/story was completely irrelevent to the entire plot.

Obviously any of those stock ‘horror’ movies that have been released in the past 15 years are pretty terrible, but perhaps the worst would be The Haunting of Molly Hartley, and that only wins the title because the movie ends and you don’t know what happened. Seriously, there is no closure and no explanation at all.

The one that angers people the most is when I tell them that I don’t like The Departed. Looking aside from the sex, violence, and language, it was a pretty intense and satisfying mob movie–until a certain point, which we’ll call Point X. After Point X, the movie spirals into a plotless pille of worthlessness that takes all the pleasure out of the first part of the movie.

Other Dishonorable Mentions:
–Final Destination (they got worse as they went on)
–Pineapple Express
–Caddieshack 2
–The Patriot

The most disgusting movie I ever saw had not violence, swearing or rude jokes.

It was called In the Company of Men, and basically these work collegues go away for business and one gets bored and although he is married goes out of his way to get this deaf girl to fall in love with him over a period of weeks/months for fun.

The girl eventually finds out the man is married and and confronts him, he is not sorry and tells her he just wanted mess with her head and then makes fun of how she speaks.

It physically hurt me to consider somebody purposely breaking a person’s heart for fun.

I can watch gory movies or bad taste movies and take them at face value but this affected me

Your bad ,my good!

Groundhog Day
Inependence day
The Three Amigos
Pulp Fiction
Ace Ventura Pet Detective
The Dirty Dozen

Movies So Bad, I Can Tell Without Even Seeing Them (mostly):

  • *]Borat
    *]Bruno
*]Just about any vehicle for Will Ferrel
*]About half of Ben Stiller’s resume
    *]Same for Jim Carrey

Just color me an old f@rt who does not appreciate the over-the-top, envelope-pushing, boundary-crossing “humor” perpetrated by these folks, especially Sascha Baron Cohen or Tom Green, when they involve Non-Player-Characters in their work.

    tee
Old F@rt who doesn’t “get” Facebook, MySpace or Twitter either 😛

  • Obviously ‘envelope-pushing’ like Tom Green is not to taste and I agree with that, it’s not funny or entertaining…

But I would disagree with the others, esp Ben Stiller… I thought ‘Something about Mary’ was overrated, but he is hardly boundary crossing compared to some.

One of the worst movies I ever saw was a French film called “Queen Margot.” The whole movie was populated by perverts who had sex with everybody, the “heroine” did every guy in the movie, including her own brothers, people were dying right and left and always seemed to manage to bleed all over her. The guy who’s her main lover in the film gets beheaded and at the end she rides off in a carriage with his severed head wrapped up in a cloth in her lap…years later, I wish I could forgot this repulsive movie, but it seems to be permanently burned into my memory.

Dogs: Thirty or so years ago, my family and I saw this movie at a drive in theatre. It was so bad we were laughing which wasn’t the intent of the movie. May it rest in peace and never ever grace the silver screen again.

I certainly agree with Terms of Endearment we kept fast forwarding in hopes that Shirley MacLain would hurry up and die already. Disney’s “The Bear”-2 hours of life from a bear cub’s perspective without even a Jacques Cousteau commentary. Borrring!
Tropic Thunder by Ben Stiller was so bad that it had me rooting for the Viet Cong. The only “good” part was the ads for fake movies. After that I don’t think I laughed once.
The new “The Day the Earth Stood Still” with Keanu Reeves none of the earthlings you need to learn to get along of the orignal and earth is saved because we learn to adapt under crisis which is never explained how that happened.
“Star Trek V” was absolutely the worst of the trek movies and I like trek movies. Two redeeming features, 1. Uhura’s “Hotchie Cootchie” dance and Kirk’s one good line “Let’s not keep God waiting, He’s a busy man you know.” The ending with them singing “Row,RowRow your Boat” made me really want to scream:bigyikes:

MARS ATTACKS!

WOW was it STUPID!!!
Worst Money I Ever Spent!
My friend liked it but, I just couldn’t wait until it was over!

Bill Murray’s Lost in Translation. We left half way through, and its the last movie that I’ve been to in a theater. I finally gave up on Hollywood after that movie.

Sailor Kensin was the only person on this thread to even mention Manos: The Hands of Fate.

If I had not watched it with MST3K commentary and I was forced to sit through the whole thing, I would have gone crazy. Even with the MST3K commentary I would have gone crazy had I not been watching it with all my brothers, my sister-in-law, my boyfriend, and another brother’s girlfriend, who were all like, “THIS IS SO BAD WHAT THE HECK WERE THEY THINKING?”

It is just so bad for so many reasons.

In fact, anything that MST3K made fun of is considered a very bad movie by everyone’s standards.

EDIT: Sorry, didn’t know were weren’t allowed to say the 4 letter cr-word on here. 😛

“The Master does not approve!” :rotfl:

PS:

Director: Hey—the door to this skanky old cabin in the middle of nowhere is unlocked. Quick, let’s film a movie in here!

Awesomely bad terrible movie–Evil Dead 2

There is literally a scene where the main character kills a zombie, looks right into the camera, and says ‘Groovy.’ Originally meant to be a horror movie, I can’t remember laughing so hard as during this movie.

Jaw the revenge( jaws 4 )
The worst produced and acted movie ever. And the plot… don’t even get me started.
Horrible…

Inside Daisy Clover – Some books should remain books. Honestly, though, the acting
was bad news with Natalie Wood and Robert Redford. You probably
can’t even find this anymore.

Valley of the Dolls – Let’s just say they didn’t have much of a budget. Falls into the
category “It’s so bad, it’s good.” They just don’t make them like this
anymore. Famous line from Patty Duke: “…and you’re not the
breadwinner either.”

“Saturday the 14th” - a spoof on the Friday the 13th movies was horrible.

“I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry” 2 guys pretend to be gay, get married so one can have medical benefits was Dumber than “Dumb and Dumber”.

Read every post in this thread. I had forgotten about Dune–yes, it was horrible good. Plan 9 From Outer Space is so bad it’s wonderful; and I liked it even more after I saw Ed Wood, with Johnny Depp and Martin Landau.

My picks for terrible movies:

anything with Will Farrell
Borat
Bruno
Battlefield Earth
There’s Something About Mary
generally speaking, anything with Cheech and Chong (although Cheech Marin by himself is quite a good actor.)
The Brave (this is the one movie Johnny Depp wrote and directed himself. It was never released in the US but copies are floating around Amazon.com–mostly in Korean with English subtitles. It is without question a really bad movie and it pains me to say this because I really do enjoy Johnny Depp’s work.)
