Bextah, free will does not include a “pass” to break God’s commandments. Yes you (in that I mean society) can take certain choices away if that choice means a evil act is taking place. You probably wouldn’t think stopping the murder of a child or adult would be interfering with the murder’s “free choice” would you? Pro choice is pro-murder–by saying there is choice in the matter of the murder of an innocent child during its first nine months of life then you assent to murder.

I truly don’t think you believe in allowing a murder to take place under the guise of free will. I just don’t think you’ve really done the introspection necessary to go beyond that old tired excuse…“Well I wouldn’t have an abortion but I don’t think I should take this right away from others.” You know this was the same excuse used by those who tolerated slavery. It is my belief that someday we will look back on abortion the way we view slavery. As a horrible practice that was allowed because people didn’t want to interfere with “choice.”

At any rate to get back to the thread, in promoting Cider House Rules or any other film that advocates an abomination, you in effect promote society’s tolerance of abortion. There are many films, concerts etc that I will not attend because I will not put money in the pockets of those who promote something so against our faith. No matter how artistic, no matter how beautiful the stars, no matter how well filmed, this movie portrays an abomination as acceptable. I would never defend such a movie.

Actually, free will does include the right to break God’s commandments. God gave us the supreme gift to make our own choices. It is true that many take this gift and use it in the wrong way, against God’s plan for us, but He still gave us this ability for a reason.

Murder, abortion, pedophilia - illegal or not there will still be those who break the laws of God and man. They will make that choice regardless. The problem with abortion is that if it is illegal and people go back to backyard abortions with coat hangers there will be even more deaths.

I can tell you now if you made women watch a documentary that shows exactly what happens during an abortion, they wouldn’t do it. If there was legislation that made you go and be told of what happens to the baby and to you and how much the child actually feels, the rate of abortion would fall so dramatically.

Believe me, I have done a lot of introspection regarding this and other issues. It’s easy to be militant about these things, but you can disagree with such things while still coming to terms with why people don’t agree with you. It’s a lot harder to give everyone your understanding, to try to change a persons mind rather that condemning them without discovering the reasons why they feel the way they do. It’s hard to be empathetic to all sides.

Believe me it’s harder. I have a community such as this judging and condemning me, accusing me of supporting murder and then I have a secular community condemning me for being ‘too religious’ and accusing me for being out of touch with society.

God gave us free will to choose Him, the Good, our Greatest Good, only. The result of the choice contrary to Him, His Truth, The Good, is loss of Him, loss of His Grace and of supernatural life. Sin results in unhappiness. A choice for abortion is a choice against God in that the object of the act of abortion is sinful in itself. Any “greater good” resulting from or in relation to the choice of abortion is nullified by the object, killing of an innocent life. In the end, people are not evil, they either accept or reject evil and those who accept it can eventually reject it and convert.

As regards movies, any movie that lead me to see sin in a light that was opposed to God is the “worst movie ever made” to me… Hollywood Knights, California Dreaming, Going Places ( French film with Gerard Depardieu ), et al. Putting the love for the opposite sex before the love for God is the very definition of the sin against the first commandment. Putting sex before or in place of love is further insult. It is obligatory to learn and inform others of this.

To quote Oscar Wilde, I paraphrase: “There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral movie. Movies are either well or badly made.”. I disagree on religious grounds and we should learn from our mistakes.

The Blair Witch Project - In a way, I’m a fan because it was such a cheap production with a silly plot - a couple of teenagers scare themselves camping in the woods - yet, it made loads of money.

Night of the Living Dead - Again a cheap production with a silly (although somewhat more entertaining) plot that made loads of money.

These are two movies that are so bad that they’re good and in my “must own” category.

Umm… Anne Katherine Emmerich’s writings, based on her visions and recorded by her secretary, have been approved as personal revelations by the Church. Her books carry an Imprimateur. As for the money, I have not heard that and even if it is true. Even if the the things you sad are true, they fall into the “So what” category and have no bearing on story or production qualities.
Nope. Her books are banned.
Anne Catherine Emmerich was an Augustinian nun who was born 8 September 1774 at Flamsche, in the Diocese of Münster, in Germany and who died at Dulmen on 9 February 1824. During her life she experienced the mystical phenomenon of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which after a study ordered by her bishop were judged by a panel of physicians and clergy to be authentic. In addition she had mystical visions, the content of which came to be written down by Clemens Brentano, a man who served as her secretary in this regard. Among the most famous of her writings is the The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
In 1892, well after her death, her Cause for Beatification was introduced by the bishop of Münster. She subsequently attained to the title of Venerable, indicating Rome’s recognition that she lived a life of heroic virtue. However, in 1928 Rome suspended the Cause of Beatification when it was suspected that Brentano fabricated material attributed to her. The Holy See has since permitted the Cause to be re-opened on the sole issue of her life, without reference to the possibly doctored writings. On 2 July 2003 a decree of a miracle was promulgated by the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, opening the way for her Beatification (L’Osservatore Romano N. 29, 16 July 2003, 2).
Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich’s Visions
Question from on 05-31-2006:
Hi, Father Levis:
I am currently reading Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich’s book, " The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. " Does the Church hold an official position on her mystical visions? The specificity of the revelations regarding Jesus’s Passion would seemingly lend themselves toward being authentic.
Thank you, and may God bless you.

Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 05-31-2006:
Tom, To my knowledge the Magisterium of the Chuirch has not yet officially recognized the authenticity of Sister’s visions. Fr. Bob Levis
Indifference to the truth is an unChristian attribute that can cause scandal.

Thank you, and may God bless you.

It doesn’t say it’s an untrue vision. They haven’t decided.

But…it does portray that Jesus, “Suffered, died and was burried.” ** This is an article of our faith. ** Pope John Paul II approved of the film, and it is also on the list of best films of 2004 by the USCCB.

I, personally haven’t been able to watch the whole film, not because I think it’s bad, but because I am a wimp. I find it too disturbing. :o

So let’s get back to bad movies…🙂

Bextah you have a good heart but I don’t think you are making a proper distinction between the “right” to break Commandments (we have no such right!) and the free will that gives us the opportunity to break Commandments. An opportunity, a choice good or bad, is not a right. Having a right suggests someone or something will back up that right…and in the case of commiting evil acts who do you think will support that “right?” The devil? Certainly not God. God gave us free will and you are correct, it is an amazing gift but one we should treasure and use wisely. We still do not have the right to use this gift to commit evil.

You are also correct that inspite of laws against murder, rape or robbery, these evil acts will occur. But again, no one has the right to commit such acts and in doing so they must bear the consequences in this world or the next. But you are not correct that outlawing abortion would result in “back alley” abortions. This old canard has been disproven repeatedly although desperate abortion rights advocates dust it off and drag it out in a futile attempt to justify legalized homicide.

You sound like a young person so you probably do not remember life prior to Roe v Wade In those days a pregnancy outside of wedlock was a scandal, not accepted as it is today. Thus women who found themselves pregnant faced tremendous social stigma. Not anymore. Second in those days reliable birth control was not available. Thus the ability to prevent an unwanted pregnancy has increased dramatically. Further with “morning after” pills, one can take care of the possibility after the fact. (Now before anyone screams I’m advocating birth control, RU486 et al no I am not, just pointing out the facts of today’s society).

Therefore the idea that a woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant is as desperate as the supposed situation of the past is simply not true. Further the reality is that the number of “back alley” abortions that resulted in death and permanent injury were minute. I have never understood the theory that the POSSIBILITY of preventing some unfortunate occurrance (death due to abortion) trumps the REALITY that if abortion takes place it is 100% fatal for the baby. Needless to say, the possibility that some woman will have an adverse event following abortion, is no excuse to allow legal murder.

I also agree with you that education about fetal development and about fetal pain would be valuable in advancing the discussion with those who do not have a religious objection to abortion. Requiring the woman to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby is also very effective. I think there are many ways to advance our cause for life.

But keeping abortion legal justifies it to those who are ignorant of biology as well as having questionable ethics. Until we can stop this IMO un constitutinal as well as immoral act, many more such murders will take place.

I am sorry you feel picked upon. But I do hope you will think about the posts directed to you and consider if your current “pro choice” position is simply unacceptable as well as being unsupportable.

“The Bear” (circa 1990). So incredibly boring. Only thing more boring was the book.
Was this based on the William Faulkner story? That story, I had to read it in High School, was proof positive that reading William Faulkner should only be used as an approved torture device in some of the most dire of situations.

Needless to say, the possibility that some woman will have an adverse event following abortion, is no excuse to allow legal murder.
Women sometimes experience “adverse effects” (what a mild-sounding phrase!!) with legal abortion, too. They don’t just beam the baby out of her womb with a Star Trek transporter. Abortion involves cutting with knives inside the womb (because they have to kill the child while she is still inside the womb, under current legislation - drawing the child out of the womb alive and killing her afterwards is still illegal, although in some places they have “partial-birth abortion” where they can draw the child part of the way out of the womb and then kill her before she is all the way out), and filling it up with poisonous chemicals to melt the flesh of the child and to cause her to be ejected from the womb.

The cutting and the chemicals can lead to anything from infertility to the death of the woman herself, if something goes wrong (as well it might, since what can kill a little child can also harm or kill an adult). There was a notorious case in California a few years ago where a teenage girl died on the table of an abortion clinic together with her child, and they didn’t know what to do with her body, because she had gone for the abortion without receiving parental consent.
I also agree with you that education about fetal development and about fetal pain would be valuable in advancing the discussion with those who do not have a religious objection to abortion. Requiring the woman to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby is also very effective. I think there are many ways to advance our cause for life.
Children need to be taught from the time they can understand, that their lives began at the moment they were conceived, and that their birth was an important milestone along the way - but that they had been part of this world for 9 months before that, in their mothers’ wombs. 🙂

I can’t believe the judgemental nature of people in this forum.

No one here has judged the state of your soul so the use of the word, “judgmental” in describing those who are correcting you in your erroneous, dangerous and anti-Catholic perspectives is incorrect.

Catholics are indeed morally required to correct those in error. That you appear to not be humble enough to see the error, danger and harm inherent in your position is unfortunate. What is even more unfortunate is that you attack those who care enough for your immortal soul to make well-intended fraternal correction. That is most uncharitable. Do not think this to be condescending, it is not. Rather, it is a final attempt to get you to see how your attitude and is very harmful. One cannot give a single inch of ground to those who want to kill children. When you start using the vocabulary that the Enemy creates, you already concede defeat.

Finally, this is a thread about the worst movies ever made. not your refusal to conform your conscience, heart and mind to the true teachings of the Church. Please remain on topic.

yes good point and I am somewhat guilty of morphing the thread to a discussion of our Catholic teachings on life. That being said, the wayward nature of the thread resulted from someone listing “Cider House Rules” as one of the worst. However another forum member defended the movie as simply portraying a “choice” made by some in this society. Since this movie deals with and provides a rather sympathetic portrait of abortion and an abortionist, some of us maintain that it has no redeeming value and deserves its “worst movie” status. What do you think?

Given that you’d like to get the discussion back on point, what movies do you suggest as the worst? Do you believe we as Catholics should financially support, watch or reccommend movies like Cider House Rules?

What I believe is that you should start a NEW THREAD, and you should entitle that NEW THREAD, “Do you believe we as Catholics should financially support, watch, or recommend movies like Cider House Rules”? Given the gravity of what you’re asking, it seems a little, well, odd that you haven’t already started a new thread.

Me and my classmates watched it back in highschool. A lot of the girls cried. Me on the other hand, I bit my knuckles throughout his walk up to Calvary all the way to the end of crucifixion scene. The reason: Pure, unadulterated guilt. >_<;;

Now if you’ll excuse me, I better go drink/eat something. Recalling those scenes has suddenly given me an urge to strangle myself (again out of sheer guilt). >_>;;

I guess no one ever corrected Ted Kennedy.

Amen to the tenth power!

Now, I still make the distinction between vile bad movies like Cider House Rules, and ‘good’ bad movies that can make you laugh (even if in pain!). I’m kind of a fan of the latter.

‘Good’ bad movies include stuff like Robo Monster (was that the title? There was a guy in a gorilla suit with a diving helmet on), Reptilicus (“We have to fire point-blank! At very close range!”), and the hilariously inept Giant Gila Monster (“I sing whenever I sing whenever I sing!”).

Thank you for your reply Lisa A, this is all I wanted. Somebody to reply with a valid argument which makes me think about things, rather than being told I am ‘intelligently vacuous’ and the rest.

We have a choice then, it is not a ‘right’ to make the wrong choice, but a responsibilty to make the right choice?

What you say makes sense to me, you are right, I don’t know Roe vs Wade, and I am Australian so it isn’t something that is brought up a lot anyway.

and havana, we are all aware of the title, we have been writing for a while, when you have a discussion it will naturally go off topic a bit sometimes, and from what I can see, you don’t mind saying what everyone else sould be talking about but you haven’t acually answered the title of the thread yourself.

and rpp - you don’t get to say what you like about my post and then when I reply coat it all with the ‘off topic’ brush.

Now, I thought the English Patient was extremely boring in my opinion.

Good Post.
Artists explore life. If they use the craft for propaganda, it tends to not work well.
A master’s thesis can be written on this sort of thing. For the artist I think there is always
something deeper under the surface. The artist has to make way for it I think.
Anyway, good post, bextah. I get it.
Thanks sauce x

Whatever medium, when the art is all about the artist, all that’s produced is junk. When you serve God through your art, you can produce sublime work.

How could i forget ALL the High School Musical films. They are utterly terrible. eew. All copies should be burnt. happy thought

Titanic.
