Names of God

Elohim is not a name. Just like the word god is not a name. The word president is also not a name.

But the word Vishnu, Allah, Yahweh are all openly declared as names in their respective contexts & scripture.

The word president is a title, and a title is a descriptive name.

There’s some evidence that Adonai was commonly used around the 8th century.
Elohim may have been used as early as the 4th century, according to one biblical scholar.

There’s an artilce in wikipedia that gives a nice overview of the names Jews have used for God. (There are plenty)
 
I don’t know if the Jews called God Allah, if that is waht yhou are asking. By the root for Elohim is similar
 
I don’t think God actually has a name as we tend to think of it. We tend to link our name VERY closely to our identity. But as someone already mentioned up thread, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.

When Moses asks who God is at the burning bush, God responds in a rather extraordinary way. He says, ‘I AM.’ It’s a description of His Being, not a name. When he gives the ten commandments, he tells, the Israelites His name is ‘Jealous’ (Which is what Yahweh translates to, I believe.) He’s called God, Father, and, Lord in other places in the bible, but none of these are really names, they’re more descriptions. Names are for our benefit to help us know God, but no name is going to capture who He truly is. This is why I tend to think of ‘I AM’ as being the be all and end all for names of God. Because to me this is about the closest human language can come to naming/describing God. God. Just. IS. Powerful! :eek:

As an aside: I would not call God Alla, if only because that has become a description to me of a ‘false god.’ I cannot know that Alla is not the same God we worship; I tend to think as there is only one God, that any heart that is truly devout to their religion’s respective god, is really worshiping the only God that there is. They’re just gravely misinformed as to who that God is. As Jesus said to the woman at the well. “You Samaritans worship what you do not know, we Jews worship what we do know.”
 
Our Elohim’s (God’s) name is Yahweh. And his Sons’s name is Yahshua (Yah(weh) with us), some use Yehoshua or Yeshua.
