I was just reading the thread about the name Lilith and I thought we could add a thread about names that make you go “really, that is really your legal name”.

I just met someone whose name was Trivial. That is right, Trivial. His mother seemed like a reasonable woman. I would think she would google the name before she gave it to him. I wonder if she had twins whether she would name the other Significant.

orangejello and lemonjello- sisters pronounced oar-on-ja-low & le-man-jay-low

and there was the name pronounced shh-a-thee-da spelled like an inslut for someone whose cranium was made of excrement. my friend found that one being a sub teacher. she almost read it aloud, but just called out the last name then asked the girl what her first name was. even checked with the principal later to see if they were pulling her leg.nope the girls name was spelled s******d.

My mother taught a little girl named a**hole – pronounced asholay.

Now just remember, with all these outpouring of new & unusual names, we have a chance to devlop an entire new generation of Saints!! Just think, no more mixing up St. Therese of Avila with St. Therese of the Little Flower!! Just think, in another 100 years, we could have St. Austin, St. Cody, St. Dakota, & all the other weird names kids are named today.

I was going to assign my CCD children to write a report on the Saint they were named after…but of a class of 21, only 3 had a saints name!!

Austin is the short form of Augustine…so we already have a St. Austin…

A friend’s sister named her son Catcher, after seeing ‘The Catcher In the Rye’ on a bookstore shelf and thinking that would be a good name for a child.

I’ve been trying to talk a friend out of naming a future son “Atticus”, after Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird). I agreed with her that yes, Atticus was a great literary character with ethics that anyone could aspire to, but perhaps she could compromise and name her boy Jeremy Atticus and a daughter Jean Louise (the kids in the book).

I once had a student named “Stash”. I think his mom was on something else instead of the epidural…

Totally <3 those names!

I know a “Buck Shot.” This is Texas. Oh, yes! And a “Latrina.” Her father was in the army at the time–Mother must have been sleeping when he filled out the birth certificate.

I knew a child named Random. His parents didn’t see what I thought was so funny. I later learned it’s a name with precedent but at the time I was 12 and 13 and thought it was the weirdest name in the world – and I knew kids named Rainbow, Sunday, Sundance, Heaven, Zanonie and Pooh-Bear (no kidding, real name).

Our fourth child was baptized in a parish different from the first three. A new thing we had to do during the preparation process was fill out a questionnaire with the child’s name and the reasons for choosing it. This question was accompanied by a short paragraph about naming children.

I wonder how common this is. While we prefer traditional and family names, and all of our children have quite traditional names, it made me think about the name we had chosen a bit more.

I ran across Imunique working at the Dollar Genaral and Taaka working at Winn Dixie.

This year I have Kingston in my class. Also Latorious - I have to stop myself from calling him Notorious Latorious.

The teacher next door had Heaven and Baby on her class list.

Years ago, we had the “Children of the Corn” - Cornisha, Cornika, Cornell, Corneilius, Corndrea, Cornmesha…

My Mother in Law taught MaiTai - a little African American boy.

One year we had sisters - Myosha and Meosha - reminded me of cell division Mitosis and Meiosis - every time I heard the names.

The 2nd of the Corn children came back to visit me with her baby - La’Pagedrianna (or something along those lines). She called her Monie for short???

Names that make you go hmmmmm…

Or she was of Polish descent.

The Polish name Stanislaus is often shortened to Staszu or shortened even more to Stash. St. Stanislaus is the patron saint of Poland.

There’s a Red in our community. First name, not a nickname.
And yes, he has red hair.

Also, even better: Tuff Tyre. Again, real name here, no joke.

I see nothing wrong with Atticus??

I still don’t understand Madison on a girl…it means “son of Maude”!?

Or Addison “son of Adam”

I think the deal is, some couples wanted to keep the mother’s maiden name alive and give it to a child as a first name. For generations they named sons Madison, Kelly, Bainbridge, MacKenzie, Delmar, and so on, but then people had fewer kids, so they started giving these names to girls.

I used to run across unfortunate names when I worked as a librarian. There was a little girl whose legal name was Pretty Girl. Another girl whose name was Precious. There was also a girl whose name was Talley W**ker. There was a guy whose legal name was Randy Buck. There is a man with the last name of Stiff. His first name is Richard. He was teased unmercifully until he started using his middle name. There is a guy whose name is Happy Newyear. His nickname is Hap. There was a girl name Serene Peace. Another girl named Harmony. There was a guy who was doing genealogy and discovered one of his ancestors was Ima Hogg. There is a man around here named Loyal Hicks. There was a girl named Ecstasy , but she changed her name as soon as she turned 18 years old. She made everyone call her Stacy until she could get it changed.

I don’t get the whole dirty name thing. I think it should it should be against the law.😦

I once had a student named Pecos Bill. I don’t think his mother was aware of the character in folklore either.
