In that case, may Nancy Pelosi be converted through the intercession of St. Augustine.

I have started a new thread on this but wanted to post in this thread that Pelosi is digging herself in deeper. Her argument now seems to rest on one out of context quote by St. Augustine made 1600 years ago.

Gotcha! This might be the best thing to happen to expose the pro-death party.

Next thing she will have to admit to is the baby is just a clump of cells. Maybe we can push her into it.

I just wanted to add, I think Laura Ingram has been great on this issue with Pelosi and the bishops and the pro-life issue. Laura is a solid catholic convert and I love listening to her, I can get a lot of catholic-slanted politics that I can’t get on the ewtn affiliates because of non-profit status. She has been reporting all the stuff about Pelosi’s mistakes, and the Bishops response, etc. And she’s going to go after Pelosi and the dem vp candidate on this issue too.

I heard Rush’s show on monday and he was right on with everything about the church and its teachings. He may not be catholic, but he respects the church’s teachings and he realizes how important the pro-life catholic vote is to the pro-life party.

I think this, along with the dem presidential candidates goof at the debate last week, has been a huge mistake and a huge opportunity for the church to step in and teach. The dems opened the door on this issue and opened it wide. Now we get to watch as the bishops step up to the plate to make things clear. I only hope they keep making these dumb mistakes, and that the issues with the vp candidate become bigger so the church can step in and clarify teachings and have a non-parisan role in this election.

I can also say, I am very proud and happy to see the bishops that have stepped up to make comments. I hope it continues. And I hope they stand up and speak out about pro-abortion politicians.
I hope this notice will also go our to Maria Cantwell, **** Durbin, Susan Collinsw, Tom Harkin, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Mary Landrieu, Pat Leahy (who won’t let pro-life judges out of the judiciary committee), Barbara Mikulski, Patty Murray, Rosa DeLauro and Charlie Rangel. There are others, I know, but these are the most visible and never miss an opportunity to say that they are pro-abortion.

Some of the Speaker’s Catholic colleagues in the House have also spoken out to correct her errors:

Excerpt below:

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

On the Sunday, August 24th, broadcast of NBC’s Meet the Press, you stated “as an ardent, practicing Catholic, [abortion] is an issue that I have studied for a long time.” As fellow Catholics and legislators, we wish you would have made a more honest effort to lay out the authentic position of the Church on this core moral issue before attempting to address it with authority.

Your subsequent remarks mangle Catholic Church doctrine regarding the inherent sanctity and dignity of human life; therefore, we are compelled to refute your error. …

your erroneous claim about the history of the Church’s opposition to abortion is false and denigrates our common Faith. For example, during the reign of Pope Innocent XI in 1679, the Church unequivocally stated it is an error for Catholics to believe fetuses do not have a soul; and confirmed the teaching that abortion constitutes homicide.

To reduce the scandal and consternation caused amongst the faithful by your remarks, we necessarily write you to correct the public record and affirm the Church’s actual and historical teaching that defends the sanctity of human life. We hope that you will rectify your errant claims and apologize for misrepresenting the Church’s doctrine and misleading fellow Catholics.

Respectfully,

For those of you who are interested, the archbishop of San Francisco, Most Rev. George H. Niederauer’s unlisted email address seems to be archbishop@sfarchdiocese.org.

I am certain it is unlisted for a reason. I also think that his excellency should listen to the faithful’s legitimate concerns. If you decide to email him, please be charitable and understand you are addressing a successor to the apostles - even if you disagree with his pastoral approach.

On the other hand, for those of you who think his excellency should not intervene - this is the latest:
Pelosi stands by abortion comments
DENVER (AP) - Under fire from U.S. Catholic bishops, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not backing off contentious comments about abortion she made during a weekend television talk show appearance.
Pelosi said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press'' that doctors of the church’’ have not been able to define when life begins. That prompted swift rebukes from Washington Archbishop Donald Wuerl and Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput, who said Pelosi was incorrect and that Catholic teaching has consistently condemned abortion.
Cardinal Edward Egan of New York voiced similar sentiment Tuesday. Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William Lori, chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, also issued a statement correcting Pelosi.
Brendan Daly, a spokesman for Pelosi, said in a statement Tuesday that she fully appreciates the sanctity of family'' and based her views on conception on the views of Saint Augustine, who said: ‘… the law does not provide that the act (abortion) pertains to homicide, for there cannot yet be said to be a live soul in a body that lacks sensation …’’’

Apparently: the Archbishop of SF will address this in the Archdiocesan newspaper Catholic SF on Sept 5.

This thread is a bit of a double post, since this update is included in the original thread on Pelosi’s comments.

There, I wrote:

She continues to leave the door open for the church to keep this issue at the forefront. How dumb can the she get?

Go get 'em Bishops! Go get 'em!!

This will get Biden caught in the pincers.

Maybe I’m just tired from a long day…do you doubt the power of prayer? Are you saying that God couldn’t convert her heart no matter how ignorant her statements? I believe I’ll trust.
Where in the heck do you get this idea? Of course not. The answer to your questions are an emphatic “NO.” What I do not understand is what your non sequitor has to do with the trade decficeit on Asian grain.

IMO, it’s all about ego. They can’t stand to think they can’t be right, or convince everyone they’re right, or bare to humble themselves to church teaching.

What a disgusting way to weazel around the issue. We all have a conscience but I, for one, am sick and tired of hearing this as an excuse to do as we please. At the time of conception, a new life begins with distinct genes, etc. No wonder some of think the church itself sends mixed messages. It certainly does not help to have one of the most powerful women in the country, a professed Catholic, twist the teaching of the church in this way.
I agree wholeheartedly. There is enough confusion among Catholics, especially those who do not continue their Catholic education beyond what they learned in High School, or College, regarding what are infallible/fallible beliefs of the Church without a public figure claiming to be Catholic denying, in public, one of the most pertinent teachings of the Church, when life begins. And then she is censured only in Catholic papers. Many Catholics don’t even read them. How will that lessen the confusion?

I’m not sure it would be appropriate for him to comment. As her Bishop his first step should be to counsel her privately.
I don’t know if Pelosi has been counseled in private, but I think Kerry has. Of course Kennedy in the bosom of his devotedly Catholic family has all the answers.

This is very good. But was this posted in any secular newspapers, or did CNN or FOX SHOW this on their news channels? That is whereit really needs to be.

Unbelievably she is still hanging her argument on one out of context quote by St. Augustine made 1600 years ago.
It sounds as though she is “playing politician” by trying to stay neutral and sit on the fence of lukewarm views so not to alienate future voters.

I didn’t even even see the rebuttal by the Washington DC Archbishop in the Washington Post yesterday. Fox has been talking about the bishops’ responses though. The Washington Times has this article today, but no mention of the reps letter. washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/27/catholic-bishops-assail-pelosi-over-her-remarks-on/?page=2

One does not get elected to the Senate by being stupid. Of course Nancy Pelosi knows what she is trying to sell is untrue. She knows it, but just doesn’t care.
bolding = mine Should this not be the House. However, seeing some of what is in there, you could have fooled me either way.

Prayers & blessings

What I find so scary is that this woman is two heart beats away from the presidency and is considered by those in her party to be a paragon of leadership. Sooo Scary. Lord, please , please help us.
