If the Catholic Church did not teach that life begins at conception, why did it make the Immaculate Conception a dogma of the Church in 1854?

Obviously Mary’s life began at conception. Did anyone’s life start differently?

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2008

STATEMENT OF HIS EMINENCE, EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN CONCERNING REMARKS MADE BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Like many other citizens of this nation, I was shocked to learn that the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America would make the kind of statements that were made to Mr. Tom Brokaw of NBC-TV on Sunday, August 24, 2008. What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age.

We are blessed in the 21st century with crystal-clear photographs and action films of the living realities within their pregnant mothers. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly, and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb. In simplest terms, they are human beings with an inalienable right to live, a right that the Speaker of the House of Representatives is bound to defend at all costs for the most basic of ethical reasons. They are not parts of their mothers, and what they are depends not at all upon the opinions of theologians of any faith. Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being “chooses” to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name.

Edward Cardinal Egan

Archbishop of New York

I can add nothing to this, except to say that apparently there is NO SUCH THING as a Pro-Choice Catholic.
Wow, she’s really getting raked over the coals on this one.

if that wasnt soo dang true itd be really funny
I know right. Can’t the Church just kick her out already? Seriously take Pelosi, Biden and Kerry and Kennedy and give them the boot. Make it very public, and let it be known the Church and Abortion do not mix in any terms. It would do wonders. Yes a lot of folks might leave, but do you really want those folks calling themselves Catholics? They are the ones who are giving the Church a bad rep.

👍

This scandal has gone on long enough. And Pelosi just made it worse with her comments to Brokaw and then entrenching her false statements today.

Pelosi has given the bishops the best opportunity they will ever have by misquoting the Church’s teaching on abortion. If they don’t speak out now, they never will.

If I remember correctly, Ms. Pelosi is also misunderstanding the
Real Presence. In an earlier post, someone quoted (from an
excerpt in a book) that her granddaughter stated correctly that
(Communion) was the body and blood of Jesus and her mother
and grandmother were telling her it “represented” the body and
blood of our Lord. Wow…hope that little girl hasn’t been misled.
That is probably why Ms. Pelosi publicly received communion at
the Mass when the Pope was here.
I applaud the archbishops and bishops who have come out with
clear message correcting her erroneous beliefs. I plan to write
to all who have spoken out.
For those in earlier posts who lamented that Tim Russert wasn’t
here to set her straight, Mr. Russert was also one who “personally
did not believe in abortion, BUT…” So I don’t know how he would
have questioned her. Many on the conception part, I don’t know.
The reason I remember this about Tim Russert is that he died
right around the same time as Tony Snow, a faithful Catholic,
and little was said about his faith but much about Mr. Russert’s.

That was because Russert was part of the liberal media. I do not know his party affiliation. I do know Snow was Catholic to the core and Republican.

I agree - she needs to make a public correction and admit she was wrong. But I don’t think pigs are ready to fly just yet…

Some House Republicans have asked her to do exactly that.
Nineteen Catholic House Republicans led by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) signed a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to correct comments she made on NBC’s Meet the Press regarding the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion.

Daddums 🙂

She wont do it. She came out today that she was standing by what she said. Even after being told by the Bishop she was wrong. Hello how ignorant is she?
As I said, pray for this poor confused woman.

It is odd for anyone to argue with the Catholic Church about what the teaching of the Catholic Church is. Every statement she makes only serves to erode her credibility.

Pelosi is such a n00b.
I cannot believe how ANY Catholic can believe that. I cannot believe that anyone with a high-school education would believe that! If you’ve read any book on the subject of abortion and the Church, you’d know their stance on it.

St. Augustine didn’t say ANYTHING about life beginning at 3 months!

Am I mistaken, or is there some document that dates back to the apostles’ time that states that Abortion is wrong?

Russert was former Chief of Staff of Tip O’Neill. O’Neill helped form the" personally opposed to abortion but supported woman’s right to choose "strategy that pro-abortion Catholic politicians used for cover for years and years.

The only reason they got away with it was because the bishops let them

These are on contraception. The 10 Commandments tell us not to murder.

“The second commandment of the teaching: You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not seduce boys. You shall not commit fornication. You shall not steal. You shall not practice magic. You shall not use potions. You shall not procure [an] abortion, nor destroy a newborn child” (*Didache *2:1–2 [A.D. 70]).

Yep. And, prominent Bishops have responded. Her heresy has been a gift to the Church and the Pro-life movement…and even the Republican party ironically enough. 👍

I She should just start a new religion called Pelosianism. QUOTE]

St Augustine must be watching all this from above. HIs feast day is August 28.
I love the name you chose for Pelosi’s new religion…it sounds so much like the heresy spell that Augustine was under back in his pagan days. “Pelagranism” was the belief that humans can save themselves without God’s grace.
If St Augustine was able to reform from his pagan ways there may be hope for Nancy. I propose that all readers of this thread say a special prayer to St Augustine on his feast day. Ask him to send some special graces to help turn around Ms Pelosi. She can only be saved with God’s grace.
