Has anyone known or had to deal with anyone close to them who is someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder? How have you dealt with it?? I think there should almost be a community group for those who have suffered at the hands of those with NPD.

If you can, have nothing to do with them. If you have to have contact, limit it as much as possible, and try to ensure that they manipulate you as little as possible. do not make the mistake of thinking you can help. Tell them to get professional help.

The topic has come up a few times in my two years in CAF, and has had some helpful contributors.

The advise has invariably been similar to that of the previous two posters: protect yourself and your children (if applicable), and don’t try to understand or fix the narcissist.

Please note that one thread was closed for verging into “medical diagnosis”, in contravention of forum rules.

Try this in google: site:forum.catholic.com narcissistic npd

BTW, I visited your blog, and found it uplifting. I left a comment on St Francis’s “Perfect Joy”. 🙂

Avoid them if at all possible. If you must be with them, you have to just let them be a narcissist and basically be subject to what they want, because it’s all about them.

What everyone else has said. Avoid , remember they will never change,. and keep in mind that their abusive behaviour has nothing to do with you.

While you are learning about this disorder try and avoid the name Sam Vaknin. The man has spread a great amount of misinformation.

Do a search for “sociopath”.

There is a thread where recognizing and dealing with these personality types has been discussed at some length.

But, just avoid them.

That’s all you can do.

My mother was like this. We should have moved far, far away when we first married. The baggage I carry from this relationship is crippling, I am an emotional and psychological wreck. I finally cut her off when I was 48 years old. That is a ridiculously long time to suffer, and a lot of further damage, beyond my nightmarish childhood. Take very, very, seriously the advice to completely avoid them. You cannot fix them, and they are vampires, sucking all the life and joy out of everyone they touch.

My mother, too…had a horrific childhood. It is hard but you have to protect yourself.

Please contact NAMI the National Association for Mental Illness. They have community groups for parents, spouses and siblings of persons with these disorders.

I will be praying for you.

Thank you everyone - in this case it is my father. Please forgive me for spilling this, I have nowhere else to really turn at this point, and I desperately need some community that the Church is famous for.
My parents split over 12 years ago now. He cheated on my mom, convinced me she was nuts because she struggled with a really horrific family past and some depression, has invaded my diaries and my room…this was long ago.
Now he hangs out with my mom’s extended family quite often - comes all the way out here to do so. He spreads actual slander about my mom, and I have emails to prove it that were forwarded to me but he claims are altered. He says that she slept around, had abortions, stuff about seances, was never abused as a child, etc.
He threatened to destroy my relationship with my mother when I told him that doing a comedy show at her workplace out here was not very cool, then proceeded to attack my beliefs claiming I was a fake. My mom has been struggling with breast cancer this past year, with no support from half of her extended family who all live out here because he has turned them against her somehow. They, including her own mother now, all ignore her. His mom calls my mom asking if “her parts are working”, and writes her letters saying she will be blasted with fire outside of the heavenly jerusalem (my dad and his mom are both seventh-day adventist) if my mom doesn’t forgive him…which she has repeatedly. She has only ever encouraged me and him to work things out and fix things, yet he is convinced she is manipulating me. It has been horrific.
He holds me accountable for not inviting him to my wife and I’s wedding in Ireland last year…my wife did not want him there at all, and I did not want to make my mom who was about undergo chemo have to stand next to someone claiming she has had multiple abortions and slept around. I wanted her to heal, to have strength. I thought I would lose her, I wanted her to have one last happy time free of all of the horrible family treatment and haunting by her ex husband.
What do I do??? He claims he just wants to build a relationship with me again, yet treats my mother so strangely, so awfully. He says he does not go around saying anything to anyone about her, and yet I have emails that were forwarded to me that say otherwise - the writer couldn’t understand why she was dragged into it all by him.

If anyone has been through something like this, please tell me how to survive it all. I am even gettng nasty emails from old friends who are also friends with him now…it’s like his notions are spreading everywhere…😦 I am even scared to post this…

I’ve seen him online. He seems very informative…then I learned he isn’t a pscychologist…just a narcissist himself. Which is ironic. He has dozens of videos, all of himself going on and on about narcissism.

He has similar talent as a fortune teller who touches on something vague but convinces his clients that he knows all about them. I thought Sam was authentic…until I realized everyone could be narcissist according to him.

He is curiously interesting…

you and your mom need to take measures to stay away from him don’t let him find you ever again.

and you may find the best help from counseling by a pschologist to repair the damage that has been done. NPD can be psychological abuse, verbal abuse etc.

Victims of abuse can become some of the best compassionate councilors (psychologiist) themselves and it seems to be therapeutic for us.

I will pray for you.

Hi Rita77, thank you for your reply. I took my post down, as I am even scared about him finding it somehow…😊

Typically, individuals with various “personality disorders” tend to improve as they age…life experience tends to “push” one to resolution…counseling would be in order I would think for this individual.

Although she never has and probably never will be diagnosed, there’s no doubt in my mind that my Mother has it. I have gone to therapy off and on for the last 3 years and that’s when it all began to make sense. I just recently read a book called “Will I ever be good enough? Healing the daughters of Mothers with Narcissistic personality disorder” by Karyl McBride. I highly reccomend it as it was very helpful.

I was married to one. I barely got out alive. Good luck and God bless.

Narcissists do not improve as they age. In fact they are likely to get more demanding and more petulant when not given the attention they so crave. They do not like becoming irrelevant and will go off in a thousand directions trying to get their “supply” of attention.

No, a narcissist causes a great deal of damage THROUGHOUT his or her entire life, and it can increase as he/she ages. They do not seek treatment as a rule, since their belief is that THEY are never the problem, everyone else is the problem. So nothing changes, except possibly to get worse.

My father is a narcissist.

As a result, I’ve been struggling with anxiety and poor self-esteem for most of my life. For many years I tried to make things work but it was just getting worse. I cut him off last spring. It was a very difficult thing for me but it is easier to live without him than to suffer like I did in the past.

I agree that they are vampires who will suck the last drop of blood of their victims and that they never change.

My advice to the OP: serious boundaries are needed and get as far away as you can from the narcissist in your life.

My X was diagnosed as a teen and his parents took him through different therapy. None helped him. They are very good at only showing what they want you to see and because of this you may feel as though you are the crazy one. If you are true to yourself and see things as they are you soon realize it is not you.

They are very damaging people especially when a child is born into the marriage. They want Mommy all to themselves and resent and see the child as stealing any affection from them.

If there are children involved in this relationship please do not leave them alone with this individual as they will not be kind to a child.
