How 'bout if you write (not “say”) “that word” here? Do you think that’s OK? (After all. You won’t be saying it either.)

If not, WHY did you make the point you did about eminem just avoiding “mouthing” and having someone else say it?

When Eminem has performed with other rappers, when a line of the lyric is coming up that contains that word during that line he moves the microphone away from his mouth and keeps his mouth shut so that it is unambiguously clear that he is not one of the people saying that word.

If it’s fully acceptable for the in-group to use the word, then @Nepperhan will have no problem reproducing it in full in this thread or any other. Is it racist to deny the in-group its own self-determination of what words are offensive?

I think this assertion is faulty. A person’s own value-judgement on a word might not be the only determining factor on them using it. There are a number of things I think are just fine that I don’t say here because it will activate the automated filtering. I’ve also found that some topics, even if academic, are not topics that are allowed to be in discussion here.

There is an excellent book written by Melisa Mohr about how language becomes prohibited. I cannot say the title of the book here. If you are not easily offended the title of the book is easy found.

While the literal meaning of the words may have been rather innocuous, they have been tainted through usage. This can happen with almost any symbol (not just words). There were a couple of sports teams, the “Windsor Swastikas” and the “Fernie Swastikas.” These teams existed in the earlier 1900s. Then about halfway through the century the same symbol was used in a negative way. Now it it largely seen as negative, though a few eastern religions continue to use the symbol.

Also, looking at pictures of the sports teams now feels a little weird. But keep in mind they existed in a different context.
 
To assert that the value judgment of a word flips 180 degrees because of the speaker’s race is literally - by definition racist.

Places already change names every so often. Ex: the red-light district Stewart Avenue changed to Metropolitan Drive to separate itself from its history. Over time, some places have dropped “Plantation” from their name. Within the last decade a school near me decided to nolonger call themselves by the name “Robert E. Lee” Within the last 10+ the busiest Airport in the world appended “Jackson” to the name “Hartsfield.”

I’m not sure which usage of “racist” that you might be invoking. But none of the usages of that word have an i.pact on the relationships among the people in a verbal interaction being part of the context in which they interpret it.
 
No it isn’t. This is an incredibly dim view of racism. There are words that white people could say that obviously lack the same punch as a black person saying the same words to a white person. It’s about context, as all language is.

You ever see two fat women call each other fat? I can assure you that among the Irish and Italians there are terms for those in the ethnic group which are barred to outsiders.

Really, this thing about the n-word was finalized more than 20 years ago.

That is not why they took it out. This is why why and this is getting very foolish

that hasn’t stopped the PG-rated comedy from being pulled from an Oregon drive-in theater after facing accusations of romanticizing the idea of a police presence in schools and reinforcing racist stereotypes. Yes, you read that right, someone has leveled these claims at Kindergarten Cop .
 
The name NASA should also be changed while they’re at it. The name "National Aeronautics and Space Administration is exclusionary. The name can’t be used by other groups, so they are keeping others out. Did they ever consider the hurt feelings others feel?? 😭 😏

They changed the name of Eskimo Pie. The can change just about anything they feel is derogatory whether is is an obscure planet, a rock/minerla, bird, animal, you name everything is up for grabs.

The name more commenly used in Inuit but Eskimo is still used, American Eskimo dog.
