Archbishop James Weisgerber of Winnipeg has been adopted by members of the Ojibway tribe in a ceremony intended to promote reconciliation between the Church and Canada’s First Nations …

Well it’s not a native American tribe is it?😛

It’s a Canadian First Nation that’s adopted the Archbishop.

I thought Canada was part of America?
Generally we don’t use the phrase “native American”. We use the term “first nation” or “aboriginal”.

Using “first nation” is appropriate too because Constitutionally many of them qualify as a Nation. They have special rights because many of them have Treaties between themselves and the Crown, and you can only have treaties between nations.

Not yet, but we are trying to woo them. So far they have been immune to our charms. But give us time…

😉

As for the news article, I am not sure what being adopted by the First Nations means in personal terms, but it sounds like quite an honor.

You know, I’ve heard that the White House makes good kindling… 😉

It’s a pretty big honour, he’s been adopted as a member of the First Nation.

Even more importantly, the ceremony involved former Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (basically they represent all First Nations and they lobby the government on Native rights, of which there are Constitutionally many) Phil Fontaine, who himself attended a Residential School.

It is a big honor. A priest I know who works on a mission in North Dakota, serving the Native American people there (The Mandan People) was adopted by the tribe.
