NCR’s person of the year for 2010
NCR has never named a person of the year, and we might not again in the future. However, as we sent our last print issue to press in the waning days of 2010, we felt the need to single out one American Catholic who showed extraordinary leadership and courage this last year.

In the spring of 2010, as the national debate on health care reform seemed deadlocked, Sr. Carol Keehan, the Daughter of Charity who is president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, led her organization to endorse the legislation and thus helped pass it through Congress. The move put health care coverage within the reach of an additional 32 million Americans.

If we go with the Time Magazine model, recall that *Person of the Year does not necessarily equate to best or most admirable person. In Time’s case it is (or supposed to be) the person who “for better or for worse, …has done the most to influence the events of the year.”

cf. 1938 Adolph Hitler** or 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini.

(* Not that I necessarily believe this to be NCR’s rationale)

(** Does that mean this thread is now over?)

Heretic of the year?
“American Catholic” of the year.
Sounds rather accurate.
Little resemblance to “Roman Catholic.”
Please share your thoughts with the
Superior General of Sister Carol Keehan and of all Daughters of Charity:

So sad. And to think some people actually believe this is a Catholic magazine.

Begging all to take action in re to Carol Keehan.
Although Father Gay is American-born, his life in Rome removes him from our culture.
Please - BEG him to take action. Thank you.

I would say it’s very “Catholic,” compared to the actions of her conservative opponents who want to keep the poorest American uninsured so they themselves can profit.

American Catholic and ‘catholic’ are descriptions of a certain, commonly-held mindset. Carol Keehan is supporting the earliest version of the pro-abortion push in the USA in the 1960s. It’s as simple mantra based on “let’s help the poor kill their babies. They need our help.” They do need help, help to have their babies and the ability to provide care and safety for those children. All else is a lie.

I just listened to an interview with Sr. Carol Keehan. She sounds like an amazing person.
