Nearly 500 priests in England and Wales urge synod to stand firm on Communion for the remarried

by Madeleine Teahan posted Tuesday, 24 Mar 2015

Priests says that doctrine and practice must ‘remain firmly and inseparably in harmony’

Almost 500 priests in England and Wales have signed a letter urging those attending this year’s family synod to issue a “clear and firm proclamation” upholding Church teaching on marriage.

In the letter, published in this week’s Catholic Herald, the priests write: “We wish, as Catholic priests, to re-state our unwavering fidelity to the traditional doctrines regarding marriage and the true meaning of human sexuality, founded on the Word of God and taught by the Church’s Magisterium for two millennia.”

I hope it works but a very powerful bishops conference has the exact opposite view and they are the ones getting leadership positions during these conferences.

True, but from what I can tell, the UK seems to be maybe the second most supportive area for Card Kasper’s proposal (second to Germany).

If so, this letter would represent a pretty significant chunk of resistance in what is supposed to be a pro-Kasper area.

In other words, I think this is especially meaningful because it’s English/Welsh Priests saying it.

Just IMO.

Authentic priests in United States and all other countries should do the same likewise. 👍

Just as in the contraception issue from the 60’s, we must trust the Holy Spirit more than a few mislead but well intentioned bishops. In the end, the HS will prevail; this is what I must keep in mind or I will go nuts!!!😃

Given that there are perhaps 5,000 priests in England and Wales we can see that this petition was signed by not more than 10% of them. We can be pleased with any support the church receives on this issue, but we should also understand that when only 10% of her clergy will come out in public support of what the church teaches, we have a problem.

I had read that the letter was only circulated informally, so I don’t think it’s intended to be an indicator of numbers necessarily 🤷

How do you mean, circulated informally?
What I read was that the letter was just passed informally, person to person, not systematically, so that there were some Priests that didn’t get a chance to sign it. Apparently they were going to try to allow more to sign it after the fact (though Card Nichols’ recent statement may change this).

But I don’t know much about it, I’m just going off of other people’s comments 🤷

I don´t really get all the fuzz about this. Whatever the conference decides, and the Pope does, I will be ok with.

I just can´t put myself on the same level as the bishops in understanding doctrine and possible interpretations of it. And always thought that´s why we have authority in the Church, as it makes it so much clearer for all of us to follow her teaching.

Sure, some decisions could make me a bit “uncomfortable” or be hard to understand, from my limited point of view, but not having those possible feelings would mean I have all the answers, and a perfect understanding of the teachings, which I´ll never have.

I just try to be a good son of the Church (failing miserably, most of the time) and trust that she is not being lead by people, but by Christ, as he assured us.
